Mophie, Best Buy Recalling iPhone, iPod Touch Extended Battery Charging Cases

Following an incident of an incinerating iPhone aboard an Australian commercial jet, there now seems to be some electrical problems affecting third-party accessories sold by Mophie and Best Buy as well. The affected products are cases with a built-in extended battery into the shell of the case allowing users to use their iPhones or iPod Touch devices for extended periods of time without needing to frequently recharge and are among my favorite accessories in the iOS hardware ecosystem.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are 44 issues of cases getting deformed through heat and 110 reports of excessive heat generated by the Mophie Juice Pack Air for the fourth-generation iPod Touch. Mophie is issuing a recall for over 6,000 Juice Pack Airs for the touchscreen multimedia player.

For the iPhone, Best Buy’s accessory sold under its Rocketfish brand is generating a recall of over 30,000 units in the U.S. and Canada. There are 14 reports of overheating while charging with these cases. The Rocketfish cases affected are for the iPhone 3G/3GS, according to Best Buy’s website.
