A Better Gesture for Accessing iPhone’s Multitasking Apps (Video)

Published

on

Use the iPhone for any amount of time, and you’ll grow tired of double tapping the home button to access multitasking apps.

Not only is the double tap audible in quiet situations, but if you use the home button double tap as much as I do, you’ll notice that the home button feels less responsive after just a month of use.

MaxRudberg on YouTube offers up an elegant and simple solution to this problem. In his video, A Simple gesture I would love to have on the iPhone, you get a look at how a simple swipe up could access your multitasking apps on the iPhone.

As noted in the description, this new iPhone gesture could get in the way of some apps, and won’t be perfect for every user, so it should be an option.

Personally I would love to have this gesture on my iPhone 4S. I have been looking forward to the iPhone 4S Jailbreak so I could use Activator on my iPhone. This simple app allows jailbroken iPhones to open up specific apps, like SBSettings, with a swipe across certain areas of the phone.

I don’t think we will see this in iOS 5.1, but It would be nice to get some of the iPad gestures on the iPhone.

On the iPad, you can swipe up with four fingers to access your currently running apps. This doesn’t work on the iPhone, and probably wouldn’t thanks to the smaller screen. But, A three finger swipe up would work out well if it was needed to avoid the accidental triggering that Apple is afraid of.

iPhone Gestures

The iPhone can handle four finger gestures.

If you go to your Accessibility settings on the iPhone, you can see that the phone supports three and four finger gestures in apps, so there is not a hardware restriction preventing a better way of accessing the multitasking apps on the iPhone.

Would you use this method, or a multifinger swipe up, to access your currently running iPhone apps?

I too would love to see multi-touch gestures available on my iPhone. I use it quite often on my iPad (except when I have to turn it off to use Penultimate).

WebOS already uses a single up swipe to access the card view, which is all your running apps.  It’s presumably one of the patents that HP owns.

I suspect any serious iPhone user (I have over 600 apps) would love a 2 or 3 finger swipe up to access the Multitask bar. +1s all around.
