Belkin WeMo Makes Home Automation Awesomely Easy (Best of CES 2012)

Published

on

Home Automation has been a confusing cluster of incompatible systems and professional solutions, but Belkin has set out to change that with a new system for controlling your lights, electronics and even your front door lock.

The Belkin WeMo system is home automation that you and I, and even my grandma, can aset up. You plug in the WeMo Home Control Switch to your outlet, plug in your floor light, coffeemaker or anything with a cord and you can turn it off an on from your iPhone anywhere you have an Internet connection.

The WeMo home switch will be available later this summer for $50, but it’s just the start.

Belkin Best of WeMo

Best Connected Home Award for CES 2012 - Belkin WeMo

What has my really excited is the Belkin partnership with Kwikset that will give you a WiFi connected front door lock. Yes, a WiFi door lock. With this door lock, you will be able to unlock your front door from your iPhone anywhere you are. Have a delivery and want to let the Fedex Guy set it inside, just unlock it from work. Visiting friends and family need let in while you are at the store? tap a button on your iPhone. One of my favorite things about the WiFi door lock is that we get the technology from a proven player in tech, and the lock from Kwikset, an industry leading lock company.

Another thing that Belkin showed off was a LED light bulb that connects to a WiFi enabled wireless base station. This LED light can be screwed into your standard light outlets, and wirelessly controlled form your iPhone or iPad.

Belkin WeMo Home Automation Hands On

But, the real reason we chose the WeMo system as our Best Connected Home Gadget of CES 2012 is that it is platform for home automation that you and I can really use in our homes. The switch, the WiFi door lock and the lightbulb are just the beginning. The WeMo system can be expanded to other areas of the home, we’ve even heard talk of a WiFi connected garage door opener. Also, because there is no need to rip up walls, you can add this home automation to your apartment or leased home without breaking your lease.

I’m stoked to find a simple, affordable, and easy to install home automation system; I can’t wait for WeMo to arrive in my house.

That’s nice, but you already have this from Schlage (now Nexia) and a host of other companies. Nothing new, but new for Belkin.
