Revive an Old iPhone 2G or iPod Touch 1G With Whited00r’s iOS 5

I don’t imagine there are too many people out there still rocking an iPhone 2G as their primary phone at this point, but I do suspect there are a few out there sitting in drawers still in perfectly fine condition, just not terribly useful since they’re running an old version of iOS and no longer active on AT&T. Same goes for first-gen iPod Touches.

If you don’t want to or can’t resell these for a spot of cash, don’t just chuck them or leave them lying about. Give them new life by installing a tweaked version of iOS 5.

The Whited00r iPhone modding community has just released a hacked version of iOS 5 that will work on iPhones as old as the 2G and all iPod Touches. This hack doesn’t include the Notification Center or the App Store. For apps there’s something called 3store.

Put iOS 5 On an old iPhone

Whited00r 5.1 can be installed using iTunes and it looks like you don’t need to be a heavy modder or hacker to get it working. If this is your first time doing this kind of thing, then installing on an older device is a good way to practice. After all, that iPhone wasn’t doing anything but sitting around before. now at least it has a chance to be somewhat new again.

Then you can use the iPhone as an iPod, leave it sitting in a dock forever, or give to a young person as their first iDevice.
