Droid 4 Camera Review: Photo and Video Samples

Published

on

The Droid 4 is a new 4G LTE smartphone launching on Verizon on Friday, and many users are looking forward to using the camera on the back of the Droid 4 to capture fun videos and take photos to upload to Facebook and share with friends.

The Droid 4 has an 8MP camera capable of recording in 1080P HD, but the device is set to take photos at 6MP by default and to record at 720P. To show you the capabilities of the Droid 4’s camera I took several photos and shot an HD video which are shown below.

I left the camera settings on default, as most users will, but Will include sample videos and photos at the higher settings in our full Droid 4 Review.

I’m not impressed with the camera on the Droid 4, especially indoors where colors suffer. In terms of video, it is also OK, but colors are drab and un-impressive. The Droid 4 is $199, the same price as the iPhone 4S, which has a better camera. I’ve included two samples taken with the iPhone 4S below to showcase the difference. All of these samples were uploaded straight from the Droid 4.

As you can see, Motorola needs to step up the camera quality on the Droid line.

As you can see in the image below, the colors indoors are not very impressive. I’ve included an iPhone 4S photo to the right for reference. Click the images for larger versions.

When you go outdoors, the images look nicer, such as this close up image of a fencepost, and the scenery shots in the gallery below.

Thanks for the samples … I am currently using a Droid Pro so *any* of those shots absolutely blow my camera away!

Check the DoF on the iPhone in that fence post shot …

Are there any 3rd party camera apps that can improve the resulting pictures?

Is this camera plagued with the Force Closes like the Droid 3?

Droid 3 camera was the worst.  In fact, Droid 3 was just the worst.  All the problems were fixed with the recent patch, but Moto has to push them out faster.  It’s downright embarrassing.

I have to add, the Droid 4 is the opposite of the droid 3.  rock solid software from the word go.
