Sprint RDF Page Reveals Android 4.0 Plans for Epic 4G Touch

It looks like Sprint may be among the first carrier to deploy the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update to its Galaxy S II smartphone variant. The Epic 4G Touch offers a larger 4.5-inch display, compared to the international GSM version which has a 4.3-inch display, dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, and a Super AMOLED Plus display that eschews the PenTile sub-pixel arrangement found on the preceding Galaxy S I.

According to a discovered RDF page on Sprint’s website, it looks like the carrier is in the midst of testing Android 4.0.3 for the Epic 4G Touch smartphone. Thus far, Samsung has been vague about the deployment of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, only saying that the rollout should begin in Q1 2012.

With carrier-branded devices, the update must be tested by the carrier to ensure that the new software package will deliver a good user experience on the network and won’t cause any network interference. As such, the update, most likely to be deployed over-the-air, will be handled by Sprint.

So far, other than the RDF page, neither Sprint nor Samsung has announced any specifics on when the OTA update will begin to happen.

In addition to the Epic 4G Touch receiving an update to take it up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sprint had announced last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it intends on bringing the Galaxy Nexus to its new 4G LTE network this year. Unlike the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, the Galaxy Nexus will be an LTE device rather than operate on 4G WiMax.
