There isn’t much that can surprise me when it comes to accessories these days, but every now and then I see something that makes me blurt: WHAT IN THE NAME OF ZUUL IS THAT? as I back away from my computer screen as fast as possible. This is one of those accessories.
The wonderful folks at Tecca.com dubbed this, uh, thing the “face plunger mic,” but it’s official name is Noiseless USB Karaoke Mic for iPhone, iPad and iPod nano. And it supposedly does what it says on the tin. Place this mic over your mouth and sing your heart away, no one will hear you.
At first, I couldn’t figure out why anyone would ever want to karaoke without anyone else hearing. There’s certainly a desire on the part of those of us who enjoy correct pitch and talent to smother people who can’t sing butchering Bohemian Rhapsody at the bar, but surely this is something you’d buy for yourself?
Further investigation reveals that this is an updated version of the Noiseless USB Karaoke Mic for Wii which came out in 2010. Ah, this is starting to make sense. That mic is for playing karaoke games where the point is to sing a song perfectly and score points. And if you live in an apartment building with thin walls you can’t really get your Karaoke Revolution on at 3am even if you are in the mood to get the high score on the Glee version of that Britney Spears song you love.
The iDevice version of the mic is for playing Segakara. And hey, with this you don’t have to limit yourself to playing at home. Get on the bus and belt your heart out! No one will hear you. They might get off a stop or two early, looking back in horror, but whatever. High scores rule!
It would be interesting to see if the mic worked with other apps, too. You could talk to Siri about your problems and no one else would have to know. Maybe it’ll work for phone calls. Is your desk in a cubicle farm or bullpen environment? Keep everyone else out of your business without leaving your chair.
