MLB At Bat 12 Ready for New Season, Watch Out for Auto-Renewal

The MLB At Bat 12 app received the annual update for the new Major League Baseball season, but subscribers to their MLB.TV subscriptions got a surprise email from MLB telling them that the service will charge another year’s subscription automatically at $119.99, $5 off the full price for new subscribers.

You can get the updated app via the iOS app store for free even if you never downloaded it before. Amazon Kindle users will also be able to enjoy the app along with users of a limited number of Android phones and tablets.

The MLB At Bat app lets you watch or listen to games no matter where you live. That’s a great benefit for people like me who root for their home team but live out of market and can’t watch the games. The service gives you video via a web browser, set-top boxes and the mobile apps.

With the mobile app, you can see video highlights or full game archives with a subscription to the premium service. Non-subscribers can still read news, box scores and standings for the league.

Be warned that if you signed up for the premium service, like our own Xavier Lanier, you too will get the automatic charge on your credit card. Xavier received an email warning him of the coming charges. He told me, “I love this app , but I’m not a fan of auto renew.” I agree. You too have received an email warning you of the coming charges, but if you didn’t you may want to log into their website to cancel if you don’t want to pay for another year of the service.

I love how you can customize the app to show news for your favorite team. It lets users pick audio or video from your home announcers and broadcast, if you are a subscriber. You can pause games, watch past games, and keep track of stats in some awesome visual ways.

The six levels and MLB.TV subscriptions costs are as follows:

  • MLB.TV Premium Yearly Subscription – $124.99 ($5 off for those renewing for another year) one time charge auto-renewed each year at the beginning of Spring Training
  • MLB.TV Premium Monthly Subscription – $24.99 charged each month throughout the season
  • MLB.TV Yearly Subscription – $109.99 one time charge auto-renewed each year – no free MLB At Bat mobile app subscriptions
  • MLB.TV Monthly Subscription – $19.99 charged each month through the season - no free MLB At Bat mobile app subscriptions
  • MLB At Bat Yearly Subscription – $14.99 renewed automatically – only access through the app
  • MLB At Bat Monthly Subscription – $2.99 charged each month throughout the season – only access through the app

I did a video preview of the app last year and the new version looks essentially the same. Baseball fans will love the stats, field diagrams of players, and the visual pitch count that show where the pitches crossed the plate. You get HD video, home and away feeds, DVR control, and fantasy tracking with the Premium version.

The MLB At Bat service is free for Premium users. You get all the above on your iOS device. The Android app only works with certain phones including:

  • HTC Evo
  • HTC Evo Shift
  • HTC Thunderbolt
  • Motorola Droid 3
  • Motorola Droid Pro
  • Sony Xperia Play
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Besides the Kindle Fire, the list of supported Android tablets hasn’t been released, but their site claims it will show up on Feb. 29. Look for it any day. A Windows Phone version will show up near opening day. For more information about the mobile service see the MLB AT Bat site.
