Hey! Terry Myerson! iOS 5 Works Pretty Good on My iPhone 3GS

Clearly, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s head mobile guy,  is confused.

In statements made at the Mobile World Congress on Wednesday, the man who took over for Andy Lees made some interesting quips about Apple’s iPhone and the software that runs on it, iOS.

Those statements were in response to questions about whether Microsoft would release software updates for its current handsets, something that Apple does. Only Myerson didn’t answer the question and instead decided to launch into a tirade about iOS performance on older iPhones, something that Myerson seems to know nothing about.

Hey! Terry Myerson! iOS 5 Works Pretty Good on My iPhone 3GS

Said he:

I think Apple ‑‑ you’re right, you can download iOS 5 for iPhone 3G, and it won’t be usable, but it’s possible to install …. It’s a great hardware sales tool as far as I can tell. Install this OS which makes your hardware unusably slow, so then you feel compelled to go back to the store and buy a new piece of hardware.

What?

Really?

It seems that one, Myerson has never read this article or this one, or better yet, picked up an iPhone 3GS (because that’s obviously what he meant to say, iOS 5 isn’t available for the 3G) running Apple’s iOS 5 operating system.

If he had, he wouldn’t have made that outlandish statement.

Consider this.

I am an iPhone 3GS owner. I passed on the iPhone 4. And after much debate, I passed on the iPhone 4S as well. I own a Galaxy Nexus which currently is my number two device.

My number one smartphone is my iPhone 3GS.

Guess why. Do it.

Because iOS 5 runs absolutely phenomenally on it. I have access to all of the new features. My battery life is still as good as it ever was. And I have access to the same apps that other iPhone owners have access to.

My hardware is not unusably slow. I am not compelled to go to a store to pick up new hardware. In fact, I’ll be waiting until the fall to get the iPhone 5 and quite frankly, I’ll be waiting very patiently.

I honestly can’t believe that those statements came from the guy in charge of mobile at Microsoft, I really can’t.

And it makes me wonder.

If this strategy, this – put great software on hardware to sell more hardware strategy is so, I don’t know, so bad, then what strategy will Myerson and his cohorts at Microsoft employ?

The “Not Offer Upgrades So Customers Have to Buy New Hardware to Get New Features Strategy?”

More likely, Myerson wanted to use the big stage to take a shot at Apple, a shot that unfortunately makes him look like an out-of-touch head at a major company.

Certainly not the image that the head of a growing mobile operating system wants to paint for himself two months after taking over the job.

Dude -I would not get your panties in a bunch… it’s no big deal.  These execs are paid to spread FUD -probably more than you/I. He knew what he was doing.  RELAX.  Apple’s bank account keep growing.  Another 5 years and Apple will be able to initiate a hostile takeover of Microsoft as long as Monkey Boy is leading the ship.

For the record -I only use Microsoft software because that’s how I get paid.

Ever since I upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 it has been soooo slow.  It is so noticably slower then OS4 in every way.  I am forever having to wait from 3-10 seconds for the phone to respond to my touch when using Music, Maps, Appstore, Camera and more.  I am not upgrading so that I can upgrade my iPad 1 to an iPad 3.  I do have a tip – disable spotlight completely and it will speed up your 3GS noticably.

i am using 3GS and upgraded to IOS5.01 and so far so good, no lagging and i can use all the funtionally in IOS5.01. Not laggy as you guys said.

honestly i think you’re the delusional one…only reason i got the iphone 4s is because the 3gs SUCKED with ios 5.. it was a complete lag fest for games and the loading times were terrible…its good if u make phone calls and text, which still sort of lag in between typing letters. big deal he got the part wrong where he meant 3gs and not 3g.

I have 3GS 32gb with iOS 5 and its totally crap. Its slow and thinks….allllll the time… I won’t say it doesn’t work. It works but it’s frustrating.

MS has 20+ history of OS optimization and have always shown their respect for consumers by releasing OS that aims to provide for majority and mainstream at the time. I don’t think that has been the case for Apple. They’ve always liked to have the control themselves and lead consumers. Not saying what’s better and I don’t own a Windows phone. History speaks for itself and repeats.

Terry Myerson is right. Not sure how your 3GS doesn’t lag, but my 32 3GS became a piece of crap on iOS 5.01.

Yeah, i think he’s right in that Apple puts updates out that make their old phones unusable. Judging from the other comments and friends, you’re a very rare exception.
