Apple Launches “iPhone 4G”

Published

on

If you have an AT&T iPhone 4S, Apple just gave you a huge update today, a 4G iPhone.

When you upgrade to iOS 5.1 on your AT&T iPhone 4S you’ll see a 4G icon in the upper left when you are in the new HSPA+ coverage areas.

This update doesn’t magically add a 4G radio to your iPhone 4S, but it adds the icon to your signal bar so you know when you are in a faster area.

Keep in mind this is not 4G LTE, like the new iPad or Verizon 4G LTE smartphones, but it is significantly faster than your standard 3G connection on AT&T.

If you are in a HSPA+ coverage area you’ll see a new 4G icon and experience speeds between 3Mbps and 5Mbps.

While this is not as fast as Verizon’s 4G LTE, it is a welcome upgrade for users that want to know when they are in a faster coverage area. The AT&T 4G coverage isn’t as limited as the AT&T 4G LTE, and you’ll find it in surprising places, like the small town we filmed this speed test in.

In the video above you can see a 4G iPhone 4S on AT&T compared to the Verizon 3G network. As you can see, the AT&T iPhone is significantly faster.
