Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Now Available in Europe, South Korea for Galaxy S II

After having a false start, Samsung has finally announced that Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software update is now beginning to roll out for its flagship second-generation smartphone, the Galaxy S II. The update is rolling out first to unlocked customers in Europe and South Korea, with other geographic regions to follow. According to Samsung’s Twitter message to customers, the update is now available in Europe, including Poland, Sweden, Hungary, and Korea. Additionally, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software update will also be coming shortly to owners of the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and Galaxy S II LTE.

Users in the U.S. will most likely have to wait a bit longer as Samsung will still need to work with carriers to release an update to carrier-branded devices. The Galaxy S II is available on several top carriers in the U.S. in various incarnations, including AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA. AT&T offers several versions of the Galaxy S II smartphone for its network while Sprint is branding the device as the Epic 4G Touch. Unlike the European unlocked version, some of the Galaxy S II models in the U.S. eschews Samsung’s Exynos processor for Qualcomm’s as the Snapdragon chipset offers better compatibility with U.S. carrier networks.

Timing and exact availability of the Ice Cream Sandwich software update was not announced for the U.S. market at this time, but given that the unlocked editions are now getting their upgrades, hopefully it won’t be too much longer for American consumers to get the latest version of the Android operating system onto their devices.
