The New Droid Incredible Deserves Better

Earlier today, we shared some specifications for the upcoming HTC Droid Incredible 4G, a device that will likely hitting Verizon sometime this spring, possibly on April 26th. The device will be the third device in the Incredible series following the massively popular Droid Incredible and last year’s Droid Incredible 2, which we thought was one of the best 3G smartphones ever made.

Back to those specs.

There were two main specifications confirmed by some NenaMark benchmarks. The first, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and the second, a qHD display.

Neither are impressive and my question now is: “Why?”

The Next Droid Incredible Deserves Better

The new Droid Incredible could be a hit. But it will likely be a dud.

Why on earth would HTC and Verizon not shoot for a fantastic device here? I can live with the dual-core processor, a processor that is probably dual-core because HTC and Verizon would have to wait a lot longer to push this phone out if they wanted to include quad-core.

But, qHD?

Really?

The earlier Droid Incredibles were incredibly solid phones. The only thing missing on the Droid Incredible 2 was 4G LTE. But you would think that a year later, after releasing a phone called the HTC Rezound in 2011 which features a 720p display, that HTC would grace the Droid Incredible with such a screen.

For some, that’s not a big deal.

But it frustrates me.

A 720p 4-inch display with Android 4.0 and 4G LTE?

That sounds like a winning combination to me and one that I would certainly have to take a long hard look at if I were in need of a new Android phone. Droid-Life thinks it might be because Verizon wants to cut costs and possibly market the phone as the first global-ready 4G LTE smartphone.

Great, but why do that to one of the best Droid smartphones ever made? Why sell it short? For me, the 4-inch display is the ideal size for a smartphone screen. In fact, I am hoping that Apple bumps the screen size of the next iPhone up to 4-inches.

Right now, the Android lineup is made up of monstrosities. The Galaxy Nexus, arguably the best Android phone on the market, has a massive display. The Galaxy S II’s have massive displays.  The Galaxy S III supposedly has a huge screen. The upcoming HTC One X will have a 4.3-inch display, which by the way, will feature 720p quality.

The Droid Incredible truly has an opportunity to stand out at that 4-inch size, but it will not with a qHD display. I’m sorry. If I had a choice between a 720p display and a qHD display, I would choose the 720p display every time.

So I guess what this means is that HTC and Verizon are shooting for the mid-range with this device. Sad, because two years ago, the Incredible was at the very top of the Android ladder.

And if this is the final Droid Incredible, and it might be because of HTC’s One Series re-branding, I think it deserves better than last year’s tech.

I realize that it hasn’t been announced yet and things could change, but from the looks of it, we’ll be getting a mediocre Droid Incredible that will likely give mediocre sales.

And here I thought HTC was trying to focus on building better hardware and improving its numbers.

Its been resently brought to light that the htc rezound is in fact a ‘global’ phone.

Are you an HTC Rezound owner?  I’m trying to decide on getting the Rezound but didn’t know if I should wait on this new Incredible.  I own the original Incredible.  Thanks for any help with this decision.

Yeah i own a rezound and im very pleased with it. And though its only feature that was promoted was ‘beats audio’, after buyinv it i found that it has other features that surprised me: it records slow-motion video, its front cam also records HD video, it can edit and trim video within the gallery, it can change the aspect ratio of videos, and what really surprised me is that it already has the main standout features of ice cream sandwich within htc sense 3.5! It has the ability to access the camera right from the lockscreen, the cam has zero shutter lag, and it has the advanced task manager. It even has some other features that ics doesn’t have. And the phone is very fast.

I love my original Droid Incredible.  In fact, I still use my original Droid Incredible.  Just love it.  I contemplated upgrading to an iPhone 5 but Apple dropped the ball with the 4S, 5 mp camera and lack of 4G.  I was eagerly anticipating the Incredible 3.  If this is true however, I’m out and that makes me incredibly sad.  Truly, to this day I still enjoy a great experience from my phone, but it’s time for an upgrade, a real upgrade, and what HTC is giving me doesn’t cut it.  Too bad…

You should check out the rezound I honestly was not expecting such a solid phone. I myself upgraded from the dinc2 and it truly was without a doubt an upgrade and a half. This incredible 3 doesn’t look like as solid of a phone as the rezound. If you havnt done so yet just walk into a local Verizon retailer and dedicate some hands on time with the rezound it will definetly impress. There’s always the galaxy nexus with the prehistoric camera tech. being its only major downfall. Good luck with the decision you make.

It does????  Really?  A ‘winning combination’?

I REDUCTION in screen resolution from what I’m running now.

    I REDUCTION in screen size.

    I already have a 4G LTE phone.

And it will soon be OS 4.0.

What is the “winning combination” for a brand new state-of-the-art 2012 device?

I have a Rezound. As of this second, it is without a doubt the best phone on the market bar none. That Verizon is blowing them out to make room for the One X is a golden opportunity to get a great phone for 50 bucks. Hell, the beats earbuds are worth 100 on ebay! I never figured out why Verizon didnt market this phone better, it has the Nexus and the Razr beat hands down, and its getting ICS this week! cant wait. Yeah, I’m happy, its a great phone. All my coworkers are buying Iphones…I just laugh at them and say “keep drinking the Kool Aid”
