Instagram for Android: First Impressions and Performance

Published

on

Today is a huge day for those who are proud owners of an Android device as Instagram for Android is finally available on the Google Play Store. The app has been one of the most anticipated app launches in Android history and those who use their smartphone as a camera will want to this app a whirl.

And a whirl is what I have given Instagram for Android this morning.

I have been rabidly waiting the arrival of this application for months. In fact, I have foamed at the mouth ever since we found out that a release was just over the horizon.

Instagram for Android: First Impressions and Performance

My first photo taken with Instagram for Android.

The reason is, I have wanted to use the camera on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus in a bad way. In fact, I told myself that Instagram might just be the application that makes me ditch my iPhone 3GS in favor of the Galaxy Nexus.

After playing with the application this morning, it’s safe to say that this is a distinct possibility.

The app is beautifully done and it works as advertised. All of my favorite filters are here, I am able to move back and forth through the menus with ease, the Galaxy Nexus’ fast shutter speed ensures that I can get my photos taken and edited in a timely fashion, and the ability to post to a social network works as advertised.

Personally, I’m not huge on bombarding my friends and followers with pictures that I take but it’s nice to know that the option is there if I need it.

From the home screen I can turn the flash on and off, I can use my front-facing camera if I need to and the button to take a photo is nicely presented in a giant blue box that is easy to find. That comes in handy when I need to pull out my phone to take a quick shot.

Once I take that photo, I’m greeted with the usual filter options and other ways to alter my photo. I can adjust the brightness, flip it around, and either add or get rid of a frame. Everything is easily accessible and extremely simple to use.

Instagram for Android: First Impressions and Performance

I like this one better.

I don’t consider myself a photographer and this app allows me to take photos that make think and others think that I know what I’m doing.

I like that.

As for the performance, I have no complaints thus far. No oddities, no sluggishness, no crashing. It’s nice to see an Android developer release an application that works right from the get-go and as far as I can tell, works on a multitude of Android devices.

I can confirm support for the Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid 3 and the Motorola Droid X2.

While the wait for this Instagram for Android was a long one, at this point, I think it was well worth the wait, And hey, maybe I’ll even wipe the dust off of my Galaxy Nexus and take it for a spin.

Stay tuned for a full review of Instagram for Android in the near future.

What do you think of Instagram for Android thus far? Does it live up to the hype?

Had no problems installing it.  Works great.  Even my lowly non ios phone was able to take great pics and upload without issue.  It’s a fun app, highly recommended.

It will be nice to see a comparison between instagram fro android, camera zoom fx and pixlr-o-matic, regarding the filter options and picture quality.

Yes it is , Go to the Play store in your computer browser and search it there. I installed it on my Evo today and uninstalled it 5 minutes later, the install is about 14 MB , No SD card support.

Installed and worked perfectly. Doesnt give you any options to play around with your photos except for the filters. Seems to run clean. LG Optimus.
