HTC EVO 4G LTE vs HTC One X

The HTC One X for AT&T and the HTC EVO 4G LTE for Sprint are very similar Android smartphones. So similar that many may wonder which one they should choose. If you’re already on AT&T or Sprint and don’t want to change carriers, the decision is clear. But if you’re thinking about switching, there are a few differences between the phones and the carriers that could tip you in one direction or the other.

Hands-On:
HTC One X | HTC EVO 4G LTE

Note: This comparison utilizes the AT&T version of the One X, not the International version.

Carriers

AT&T 4G LTE Coverage Map

Both the One X and EVO are capable of running on LTE networks, but will there be an LTE network for you to utilize?

AT&T started rolling out their LTE network this year and orange dots on the map above show where it’s available. Right now LTE is not nationwide, but the carrier is bringing it to more cities over the year and hoping to cover 150 million people by the start of 2013.

In areas without LTE coverage, the One X will run on AT&T’s HSPA+ 4G network.

Currently, Sprint doesn’t have any LTE coverage. They’ve announced plans to roll out LTE in Baltimore, Kansas City, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio by “mid-2012”. Though the carrier hasn’t said when the EVO 4G LTE will be available, pre-orders start at the beginning of May. It’s a good guess that LTE will go live shortly before or right when customers can actually get the phone.

Sprint plans to have much of the country covered by LTE by the end of 2014, but that’s a long way away.

Sprint Coverage Map

The orange dots indicate 4G cities

In areas without LTE coverage, the EVO 4G LTE will run on Sprint’s 4G network.

In most testing Sprint’s 4G comes out ahead of AT&T’s variant in major cities, though speeds do vary by location. It’s worth checking out average speeds in your town or city before making a decision.

One other thing to note: the EVO will be able to take advantage of HD Voice for making calls. HD Voice will improve call quality with a combination of upgrades to Sprint’s network and some hardware inside the phone itself, such as the dual mics. The difference is dramatic. If you use your phone as a phone a lot, this is a big checkmark in the EVO’s favor.

Data Plans

Sprint is the last of the major carriers to still offer an unlimited data plan and that won’t change for the EVO 4G LTE. Whether users are on the existing 4G network or the new LTE one, they won’t have to worry about data caps.

Existing AT&T customers have been able to grandfather in their unlimited data plans to new phones so far. New customers will have to choose from a tiered data plan with 250MB, 3GB or 5GB per month.

Hardware and Design

HTC One X and HTC Thunderbolt

The EVO and the One X are the same size — 4.7-inch display, 5.3 x 2.7 x 0.35 inches — a similar weight and have mostly the same hardware. There are a few differences that may impact your choice.

On the design front, the EVO 4G LTE has two elements the One X does not. The most noticeable is the kickstand on the back. The original EVO was the first to have a built-in kickstand and customers really like it.

HTC Evo 4G LTE Kickstand

The other difference is the addition of a hardware shutter button for the camera. Pressing this button launches the camera when you’re in another app and snaps shots when you’re in it. As Chuong pointed out earlier today, this is a must-have feature for people who care about using the camera.

The One X will come with an 1800 mAh battery whereas the EVO sports a 2000 mAh one. Since the phone has a big display and is LTE capable, you’re going to need all the juice you can get.

Price and Availability

The EVO 4G LTE will cost $199 with a two-year contract on Sprint. As I said, there’s no firm release date, though pre-orders begin on May 7th.

AT&T hasn’t officially announced when then HTC One X will be available, though a recent leak of a Best Buy memo indicates that it may arrive by May 6th.

Before the EVO’s announcement many predicted that the One X wuld come with a $299 price tag since that’s the trend with superphones these days. Given that Sprint is going with the lower standard $199 price, AT&T may do so as well or split the difference and set it at $249.

Software and OS

HTC Sense

Both phones have the same operating system: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a Sense 4.0 skip on top. There are likely to be different apps on the phone as both Sprint and AT&T have a few proprietary ones they like to throw in plus whatever deals they’ve made with third parties.

Overall, you’re going to get the same experience on both on this front.

Now that you know what differentiates the two phones, which are you more likely to get? The HTC EVO 4G LTE or the HTC One X?

I am just going to say there’s misinformation on this article. The phone doesn’t have a WIMAX radio and it won’t run on the WIMAX network. Just saying.

yup. very very true. i think this is one of the major reasons why i’m leaving sprint for at&t… that and i’ll save money on a family plan on at&t. and the absolutely UGLY design of the evo 4g lte. i mean… that’s HORRIBLE. also don’t forget at&t is GMA so if you want to use the phone internationally… a small but note worthy benefit. the ONLY reason to use Sprint is if you really do go beyond the 3GB or 5GB data usage and call a LOT of land lines. but the “unlimited” thing is just a gimmick. without 4G, how much data you think you’ll be using? it’s unbelievable that Sprint is launching LTE phones before their LTE network is available. by 2014, you’ll be out of contract and there’ll be a new generation of phones. so I hope you live in San Antonio or Dallas or where ever… otherwise, what are you doing?

Terrible. You don’t even bother to mention that the official HTC One X has the quad core sweetness known as the Tegra 3 and that the EVO ends up with a watered down dual core processor?

    Some comparison article…

It isn’t ‘watered down’ in most tests the Snapdragon S4 is equal if not faster than the tegra 3.

At the very top of the article I did note that I am comparing the U.S. version of the One X, not the International version. The version coming to AT&T will NOT have the quad-core Tegra 3. HTC said that this has to do with incompatibility with the LTE radios.

Its brainless people like you who go ranting about things you don’t know squat about, more cores doesn’t equal higher quality/speed the krait processor (2 core) has beaten the tegra 3 in numerous benchmarks + tegra 3 isn’t 4G LTE capable

@ Anon regarding quad core processor.  The author noted “Note: This comparison utilizes the AT&T version of the One X, not the International version.”  Per the HTC spec page (https://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-one-x/#specs):
    “1.5 GHz, quad-core (global version)
1.5 GHz, dual-core LTE version (USA and select countries)”

So, the version he wrote this article about does NOT have the quad core processor.

Why is this not receiving more media attention????  If there were one of those lame Apple phones, we would have been hearing about it for months on end with major worshiping articles..

APPLE SUX. YOU ARE SO CORRECT. OMG, i fund some inteligent person out there that hates icrap/ijunk like me. I really think apple pays lots and lots of people off to say bunch of lies to people. I am a tech and can and have worked on many many divices. All apple does is marketting and fooling people. Like adding a 4 on their model to make people think they are getting 4g.so ATT updated their ijunk4s softwear and now their phone say 4g)LIES AGAIN. IJUNK 4S DOES NOT HAVE 4G PEOPLE, NO IPHONE CRAP DOES, DO NOT BE FOOLED. THIS PIECE OFCRAP DOES NOT HAVE THE INTERNAL COMPONENT TO RECEIVE/TRANSMIT 4G SIGNAL. DON’T BE FOOLED BY ATT PUTTING A 4G ON THIS CRAP PHONE. THIS PHONE IS A PIECE OF CRAP AND IT’S SLOW AND HAS A VERY POOR SCREEN QUALITY.   ijunk 5 is about 11/2 years late due to catching on FIRE  LOL, so apple cameup with ijunk 4s(s stands for SAME LOL). that phone is a garbage and i would not pay $5 for it. I would not even take it for free. SAMSUNG an HTC are the best smart phones and ASUS 4d core TABLET is the best tablet out there (LOOK FOR ASUS INFINITY 700 AND YOU WILL SEE THEY ARE, FASTER 4D CORE, 8 PIX CAMERA WITH LED FALSH, THINNER, HD SCREEN MUCH BETTER THAN THE NEW ICRAP, YOU CAN ADD EXTERNAL MEMORY AS WELL). Again apple lied about their new tablet once more. the true ratnia display is 300ppi, the new icrap pad is only 265ppi, so it is NOT true ternia dissply. it also gets very very HOT and in 1hour charge time it only charges 3% what a joke garbege. another thing, this crap pad is NOT a wide screen so having a retnia dissply is useless watching a HD movie. ASUS HD dissply is million times better due to the fact it has a WIDE screen.

PLEASE PLEASE, look at HTC, SAMSUNG and ASUS for your self BEFORE you go and waste your money on any ijunk phone or tablets. don’t belive any articales that apple has paid them to print to make them look good and fool people. all apple does is copy, that is why they lost the court battel to samsung again. It’s fuuny that most people don’t know, samsung make most of the ipad 2( screem and most internal parts). I hope this helps you all make a better choice.

@ktbradford:disqus  Your article incorrectly states that “In areas without LTE coverage, the EVO 4G LTE will run on Sprint’s 4G network.”

    This is not true.

Sprint’s current 4G network is WiMAX and though the 8960 chipset is capable of supporting both LTE and WiMAX the version used in the HTC EVO 4G LTE will not be doing so.

Just like the Galaxy Nexus on @Sprint:disqus , until their LTE network is lit, these devices will be falling back to Sprint’s 3G 1x/EvDO coverage. This is a materially different fact and I think your article should be updated to reflect it.

It says Sprint “plans to have” it’s LTE network up by the end of 2014… I bought my first HTC EVO 4G two years ago in Los Angeles area and I am STILL waiting for the 4G network. Just came back from St. Louis where the have it there and it was not bad. My contract is up but not sure I want to hold my breath for Sprints claims of LTE network by 2014. I’m sure they will in some cities but bet it will not be L.A..

I live in the LA area and have been using the 4G network with my HTC Evo 4G for almost 2 years now.  You do know you have to turn on the 4G for it to be used.  You have to go to Settings, Wireless & networks, then check the turn on 4G.

Looking at my phone now, yep, 4G is on.

Think about it, why would they not have 4G in the LA market.

  9. Nice blog here! Also your web site a lot up very fast! What web host are you using? Can I am getting your associate hyperlink for your host? I wish my website loaded up as quickly as yours lol

You didn’t mention that the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE comes with a micro SD slot and age AT & T one doesn’t.
