Samsung’s $399 Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Arrives May 13

Along with the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 that we just reviewed, Samsung also announced today that the 10.1-inch variant is just a few weeks away. The Tab 2 10.1 will hit stores on May 13th, though pre-orders begin on May 4th. It’s priced at a sweet $399.

Samsung is shifting away from creating tablets only for premium consumers, though they haven’t abandoned the upper echelon completely. I expect the Galaxy Note 10.1 to fill that niche.

With the Tab 2 you’ll still get a nice 1280 x 800 HD display, though no Super AMOLED. Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is backed by a 1GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of internal storage. The 10-inch Tab 2 finally gets a microSD card slot.

At 10.1 x 6.9 x 0.38 inches and 1.3 pounds, the Tab 2 10.1 is still light and thin, though feels a scooth heavier than the original Tab 10.1. It still rivals the iPad in look and feel.

For multimedia lovers, the Galaxy Tab 2 will feature front-facing speakers, HDMI out via the proprietary port (with an accessory), and all of Samsung’s Hubs: Music, Media, Game, Readers. Plus, with AllShare (backed by DLNA technology) users can wirelessly stream media content to the Tab 2 or from it to compatible devices.

Since the majority of tablet owners use them in front of the TV, Samsung added some features that enhance your couch potato lifestyle. Both Tab 2 devices also feature the SmartRemote app, which can replace all of your media remotes via the IR blaster — TV, cable box, DVR, stereo, Blu-ray, DVD, etc. — and, based on your input, will bubble up information on shows and movies the app knows you’ll enjoy. They also feature SmartView, which can connect to newer model Samsung televisions and stream whatever is on the screen to the tablet.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 only comes with the 16GB internal storage, no 32GB or 64GB. To give you more space for all that media, Samsung partnered with DropBox and is offering 50GB for free for a year.

Other quick specs include rear and front-facing cameras (3MP and VGA resolution, respectively), Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 Host capability (through the 30-pin port), GPS, and WiFi Direct.

We will review the $399 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out our review of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It costs just $249 and offers a sweet ICS experience for just $50 more than the Kindle Fire.

Ialso heard that the 7 inch model will be available a little earlier since pre-orders are possible today for delivery on April 22. Its price is more aggressive since the Samsung will sell across the Atlantic from $ 250.
