Three Reasons Not to Buy the HTC One X

Published

on

I have no doubt that the HTC One X is a pretty good smartphone. We gave it a favorable review, most sites think it’s one of the best smartphones of 2012 and my colleague Shawn Ingram originally bought the One X instead of an iPhone. (He has since replaced it with an iPhone.) Me? I’m not even interested and there are some reasons why you shouldn’t be either.

Sure, it has a gorgeous display. Yes, it has a fantastic camera that is on par with sensor found on the iPhone 4S. Indeed it has Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4, which I can actually tolerate, out of the box. And it also boasts 4G LTE speeds and comes at an almost irresistible price.

Read: HTC One X Review | $199 AT&T 4G LTE.

Many of you will want to resist buying it though and here’s why.

Non-Removable Battery

When we reviewed the HTC One X, we found that it had pretty inadequate battery life. HTC itself has said that it values thinness over fantastic battery life and it looks like those values were instilled upon the One X.

But that’s not the problem here. The problem is, the HTC One X comes with a unibody design. And you know what that means? That means that you can’t remove the 1800mAh battery that’s inside of it.

I own the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, it has a similar battery, and it was so much of a joke that I bought the extended battery the day I bought the phone. That didn’t improve the battery life exponentially, but it did make it better.

With the HTC One X, you can’t do that so you’re stuck with mediocre battery life until it’s time to change phones.

That’s something to think about before you buy it.

No MicroSD Card Slot

I have the 32GB Samsung Galaxy Nexus. That’s proved to be plenty of space for an average smartphone user like me. I am able to comfortably store my music, my apps and any other files that I need right onto the phone. Good thing, because I couldn’t expand the memory on it, even if I wanted to.

That’s because the phone doesn’t have a microSD card slot for expandable memory.

The HTC One X doesn’t either but its situation is much worse. It only comes in 16GB form.

Let me be the first to tell you, that’s not a lot. I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS and I teeter close to the 16GB mark constantly. It’s not fun having to delete things off of your phone because you’re running out of room.

Locked Bootloader

The other two are bad but in my mind, this is the absolute worst. Currently, there is one AT&T Android phone that has an unlocked bootloader. That device? The absurdly overpriced HTC Jetstream tablet that maybe ten people bought.

Yes, the HTC One X is rootable which means users will be able to delete AT&T’s bloatware but without an unlocked bootloader, One X owners will be missing out on one of the best parts of Android.

Customization.

Without an unlocked bootloader, there is no way to flash most custom ROMs to the One X. And with AT&T showing no sign of relenting, it’s safe to assume that the bootloader will be locked down for quite some time, maybe even forever.

So, overall, while the One X may be a great phone, there is just too much limitation here for my tastes and maybe for yours as well.

Your comments are based on the us version which is biased. I own the international version and it comes with 32gb and the boot loader will be unlocked for the international version. So when you talk about the HTC one x be specific what version you are talking about.

lol, 32GB? I wish we would get 64GB.

I’m still on my HTC Velocity 4G (Australian version of the Holiday, called Vivid in US) and very much on the fence about the HTC One X. I would miss the menu button. Enough said.

Is it really worth the upgrade? From a phone that has my 32GB SD Card in it, has S-OFF, and a removable battery?

This biased author say his colleagues change from one x to iphone because

      1. Non removable battery… Oh ya iphone battery is removable hahaha.
      2. No sd card… Oh yaa iphone has a sd slot and cf slot.. Hahaha
      3. Bootloader? Oh why now get an international version… Foool…

you got that right. These points are stupid! (biased) Ur right get the international version its better. u get the quad qore nvidea tegra 3 processor (better for gaming also more selection when buying apps). Rather than a duel qore snapdragen s4 processor. Also 32 gb of internal storage instead of 16gb. And if 32 gb isn’t enough buy the one x+ its out and its faster.

84% of your battery use was talking on the phone and screen display. That sure isn’t a typical day for me. Not even close. My main concern with battery is does it drain while in my pocket? Everything else I can control and ration appropriately based on my current location and conditions.

My battery is the best I’ve ever had I can get about 20 hours easy. So you are wrong. 16gb is not that bad . I will never use it all anyway. And you think that everyone cares about the locked boot loader your wrong. I don’t care and most won’t either. The peoplethat care about it is only a handful of the people that bought the phone.everyone that I know that have an android phone has never even herd of a boot loader . There are more of then out there then there are people that root there phone. Those are stupid reasons to not get the phone.

The battery life is amazing for this phone considering its power, and screen. MicroSD who cares, if you have alot of music/media this phone isn’t for you remember it has cloud storage, worried about speed I am getting 30-40 mb down on LTE Houston…

Had it for less than a week. At best I got 3 hours of battery life with moderate use. Took it back and got the Lumia 900. Best Buy advises a load of bad phones where sold and have subsequently been returned for the same issue.

What a joke of an article. The HTC International comes with 32gb and bootloader that can be unlocked officially (and easily) at htcdev.com. 2/3 of your points are obsolete. Which leaves battery life. I get a good day out of the phone, with about 4 hours of screen use. Convenient because i can put it onto charge every night. Ive used other phones with similar screen sizes and they usually last 1.5 days. Pointless as i have to charge it every day anyway. Certainly not a deal breaker.

    • kirashi

      10/19/2012 at 10:29 am

Unfortunately what you fail to realize is the bootloader unlock via HTCdev.com is a joke. It unlocks the ability to flash ROM’s that CONTAIN THE SAME SIGNED KERNEL as the original, which means no major upgrades when Android changes to version 5.x, and not kernel tweaks which are used to improve battery life and the performance of the phone. If it’s not S-OFF, it’s not unlocked. Period.

I love my HTC 1 (M7). I had a IPhone and after 1 week it met a brick wall. Apple is garbage and always will be. And it amazes me how Many idiots go out and buy the new iPhone weeks after the Last ios came out. A waste of $ literally for igarbage. The iPhone 1, 2, 3 etc is the original iPhone with a # added and you are just paying $ for a ancient phone with a extra #.

I bought the International HTC One X on the day of release and since that day I have had 11 faulty handsets :-/ Some had good battery life others 3-5 hours moderate use all but 2 had faulty or ill fitting screens that flexed and creaked. Some had dead pixels or discolouration, one had faulty headphone jack ………………. I gave up in the end there quality control on this new handset is a joke so I’m currently using and iphone 4s until my Galaxy S3 arrives on the 30th it maybe made of thin plastics but hopefully its put together right.

Android is a fully customizable OS…if your one of the dumb people who leave wifi, Bluetooth, ext..all the time and don’t take time to manage you device or learn how dto then you deserve bad battery life. This device comes with a 25 gig dropbox and you know once a little time goes by they will allow bootloader to be unlocked just like the Vivid…iPhone’s have a unibody as well so you can’t change the battery with it either
    .

The battery is like everything – Keep the phone in your pocket n youll get a long time – Start playing tegra 3 games and itll die very quick, but saying that I think the PS Vita only lasts a few hours when playing games so you can never have it both ways! I have 150 apps many are big games (riptide, shadowgun, football manager, sims freeplay) and about 15 albums and still have half my space left – Its not really an issue, again though if you dont want to carry an ipod around and have 32 gig of music on your phone then this isnt for you! Everyone is different… Personally I think its an amazing phone and the build quality/screen quality speak for itself when you see it, not many phones can compare at the moment – In the UK you can get it for £36 on a 12 month contract also which means if the battery does start to fade youd be able to recycle for a good price after your contract ends.

Not true, not using phone all day that was fully charge in the morning and after 6 hours and 30 minutes it turned itself off. 3 phone calls and 2 text messages today for a total of 10 minutes use, this only started after owning it for 3 months, was completely happy until this week! Many complaints about this battery issue on the internet, I specifically asked about this when getting the phone and guess what…..the sale person scoffed at that and I believed him! Laughs on me since now I’m stuck in a 2 year contract with a phone that dies after 6 hours of not being used!

This is a completely biased article trying to favour people to Apple.. It’s people like you trying to control people’s minds. I’ve had smartphones since they first come out & yes if you are constantlyvon it & have screen brightness on full the battery will die as it will with any smartphone, but if your sensible & use the phone correctly the battery can be up hold & I got 32gb on my international one & 25gb on dropbox which is more than enough for me. Iphone, is the past move over cos HTC the new daddy!!!

Not having a microsd slot might be a deabreaker for some, but not for most. 10gb to store music are more than enough for me.

At&t bootloader can already be unlocked unofficially. So there goes 2 out of 3 reasons you listed. Is battery alone a dealbreaker? Hmmm.

WHAT A LOAD OF ABSOLUTE RUBBISH THIS ARTICLE IS…….

if you didn’t notice Adam Mills…The iPhone also has a non removable battery and no room for a micro sd card.

The HTC one X comes standard with 32gb of space with an additional memory through drop box of 25gb – 57gb is plenty for an average user using memory for photos, videos, games and apps. Compared with the iPhone 4, a measly 16gb and only 5gb on the cloud.

Sorry to burst your wonderful bubble, iPhone’s are the past, they’re old hat, HTC is the future!

So… To say you prefer the iPhone, you seem to be one of the sheep to scared to do anything different to your friends following the latest ‘trend’. A few years ago it was blackberry, now iPhone!

I work for Orange, one of the largest leading networks in the UK… I will NEVER own an iPhone and I get 50% discount, even that doesn’t tempt me!

I bought a iPhone and after 1week it met a brick wall. I will never own Apple garbage again. Don’t Care what friends own cuz I know my Android is twice what Apple junk is. I have the HTC 1 (M7) android and Samsung Android tablet. I love the freedom of android and ease of file transferring from a pc unlike the Apple crap. Apple controls what you can use on your phone and download. No wonder everyone I know wants to jailbreak there iphoneys. They want the freedom that I have on my android. Needless to say I know ALOT of Apple users who have switched to droid and more going to droid. Apple is a migrain and droid is the cure.

How on earth do you have 36% battery use simply on screen ????? ive had my htc one x for several months now and ive never gone over 10%. I have also managed to make my battery last 46 hours which is far beyond what ive even come close to with an iphone. I would never trade my HTC for an IPhone its moronic. You pay a premium price for something that isnt even better than the competition. So confuzzled.

The three reasons he showed here are pointless.
i’m an one x user myself yes i’m not happy with the phone bt not coz of this reason inspite of having tegra three the lte version is faster bt both of theme are bit laggy not smooth like the s3 or iphone the reason i prefer iphone is because of ios it can handle heavy deauty and is smooth.

    07/16/2012 at 12:28 am

    Dude… U r nuts… I sold my Iphone 4S for this HTC oneX… Let me state the reasons(for selling my 4S) :-
    1. 4S has horrible battery life. It is much worse than HTC oneX. I know
tht Samsung S3 is a definite winner in terms of battery. But HTC one
X seems a big improvement after my experience with Iphone 4S. I get
16 hours of battery life without cutting back on my usage (Note that
I am not a crazy person and I do not check my phone every 5 mins. If
you are doing that regularly, get yourself checked by a shrink. Its
called smartphone addiction. God bless you!!)
    2. Iphone sucks in terms of data transfer and stuff coz apple has made
it impossible to use it with anything else other than apple products.
    3. When people jailbreak the Iphone, they do it for exactly the same
reasons as why people go for android phones to begin with. I call it
    flexibility.
    4. Guys are supposed to be good with electronics. The people at apple
are control freaks. Only guys who like to be bullied and dominated
and controlled by a bunch of nerds would go for Iphone.
But being an unbiased person, I really appreciate the neat look of IOS. Females would probably prefer Iphone more because it is much easier for a non tech savvy person to use. All the faults you have listed out about the htc one x are present at a much larger magnintude in Iphone 4S.

  24. ilb

    07/19/2012 at 5:16 am

So don’t tell me you’re gonna stay with an iphone instead. iPhone’s battery is also non-removable, no expansion slot and mostly locked to service carriers.
You spoke to soon about this product. I have an unlocked 32gb version of the HTC One X and that’s all I need. Why? I had a blackberry before with only 4GB internal memory and added a 16GB micro-SD in it but for the past 3 years, I’ve only used not more than 8GB.
Battery dies too soon? Well, you just have to disable the GPS satellites and stop using live wallpapers and lock screens. We’ve lived without these features before. These add-ons are nice but they just suck up your battery’s life. Just turn them back on when you need them and be aware of your battery life.
So, I would suggest to look at your reviews again and stop being a baby. BTW, your iphone (3GS) is way too old, you need an upgrade and get the One X.

      07/25/2012 at 1:49 am

      Hi Parshva,
Even though I just bought a HTC one x and I am very happy with it, I would urge you to wait till the new Iphone 5 comes out. It should not take more than a few months now. Then you will be in a better position to decide about which phone to buy. Buying an Iphone 4S now would be a very bad decision as a new model is around the corner. The competition is between galaxy s3 and one x. Choose between the 2 or wait for Iphone 5. Its ur call.

This author seems to know little about phones. Just upgraded from the Desire S to the One X, and am very happy. The battery isn’t the best, but like most smart phones it last me the whole day and I charge it every night. Internal memory on mine is 32gb (which I have found to be more than enough for all my music, photos, videos and apps) and not 16gb as he stated. Also as other people mentioned, his friend moved to the iphone, which has the same ‘problems’ as the one x with no removable battery or sd card slot. This guy was high when writing this review, its a great phone and would definitely recommend it to anyone

Iphone, while its still good looking phone – easy to use – blondie. I anyway prefer htc, going for a shop of an X next week. I handle all three versions of one family. V is very basic, S is quite thin (not bad, for people with small hands) and X is just fine, a bit fat phone for my hands and full of good android stuff inside, Yeah :) Been using Htc desire for two years after it died because it got water inside. Battery life was not a consern with desire, I load its battery every night and that was ok. And now over a month without android phone.. Cant wait until next week and get a brand new HTC ONE X.

Those are NOT good reasons for not buying the HTC One X. People buy Android to root and play with them. The bootloader is unlockable… that’s what Google is for. Gripes about microSD are as old fashioned as when the first personal computer became available. There are numerous cloud servers to store countless gigs of information. It’s safer and backed up. Why would you risk 32 gigs of data on a phone?

Battery life? I’m betting most custom ROMs will beat out any battery life you get with an iPhone. Battery life from stock depends on how you use the phone and what apps you are running. Just about every phone gets the same battery life unless there is something physically wrong with either the phone or the battery.

I’m not here to start an argument between Apple and Google (as there probably are countless ones that already have begun on this page), so if you enjoy your iPhone, glad to hear it! However, don’t bash other equipment because it doesn’t fit your needs? I get that Apple products are made so you don’t have to think about how to use them… and that’s exactly what scares me :)

    • Personal

      03/25/2013 at 11:29 am

Nice try … but you are mistakes about on-line storage being a replacement for micoSD.

For pictures on-line storage is hideously slow, each pic takes 5-10sec of time and 5mb of your Cell Quota.

For music it is even more ridiculous ….. think you can store 16-32GB of music on line an actually play it on your phone. On-line storage is uncatalogued and each track must be downloaded. Android does a beautiful job of cataloging your music so you can find and play the track you want instantly. On-line storage isn’t even close.

The One S and X are horribly crippled for playing music with only 8GB of storage (8 goes for the OS) and no microSD. Ironic since HTC went through all the trouble of putting beats audio.

I love HTC phones but HTC screwed up on the One S and X

I have had two HTC ONE X in the last six weeks, the first one got extremely hot all of a sudden, then went to discharge its battery from 90% to zero in about a minute, would not turn on for hours and take a whole night to charge. The second one, after two weeks, discharged the same way after sitting inactive on my desk for a few hours. Worst battery issues ever… I now just ordered a Samsung Galaxy SIII. HTC? Never again.

    • Alvise Bagolini

if the battery drain happens always when you place it in a given place, very likely you placed your phone at the edge of its radio field signal: it then continuously tries to connect and looses connection, this drains the battery in a few hours. it is common to all android devices I believe. try and change provider, get one with a good field on your desk!

my htc one x european has 32Gb + 25Gb on dropbox, battey goes for 2 days on telephone use + wifi sync, or 15-20 hrs on heavy use (dead trigger and so on!).
The reason why htc has reduced all openings to the minimum (like apple) is because dirt gets in: try and open a 4 year old mobile phone and see what’s inside, rubbish makes shorts increasing power consumption or even crashing the phone. The screwless unibody is also important because screws are the weak point of the phone, they break sooner or later, expecially if the device is really big in tour pocket.
battery can be changed, it’s just optimized like apple does: no battery housing=lesspackaging.
    cheers!

I cannot understand why people are marking the HTC One X down because it does not have a removable battery. None of the iPhone series have removable batteries. In any event mobile phone batteries generally should last three to five years provided that all due care is taken. With the increase in technological advancements people tend to change their mobile phones within three years, some even earlier. Ergo, the issue of a non-removable battery is not really an issue.

With regard to the micro SD slot (expandable memory) it is not as if HTC is the first mobile phone manufacturer to opt for the non-inclusion of a micro SD slot; the iPhone also does not have a micro SD slot. By the way the international version of the HTC One X has 32GB of storage.

I also have an iPhone 3GS and honestly cannot understand how you can “tether close to the 16GB mark constantly.” You also mentioned that it is no fun having to delete things from your mobile. Well yes, whilst you are deleting things it is not as if you cannot gain access to them again because you should in fact be backing them up/syncing with your laptop/iTunes.

I agree that someone people may have faced problems with the HTC One X however it would not be the first time that people experienced problems with their mobile phones. Take the iPhone for example and the problems people faced when they held it a certain way, thus interfering with the antenna, resulting in calls being terminated.

Adam, I am of the respectful opinion that your article is unimpressive to say the least. If you said that we should not buy the HTC One X because the battery life has been tested and proved to not exceed three months and would need a complete change in handset then I could accept that. However, the reasons you have stated are stupid, to put it mildly.

After HTC screwed the HTC Desire HD users for future upgrades, that was enough for me to NEVER buy another HTC product. It’s so easy to see why they are loosing market share.

Stupid reasons, I Have an HTC One X 32GB (absolutely no memory problems) with a case with extended battery (absolutely no battery life problem even when I only use the stock battery that lasts up to 22h with moderate use) and finally my bootloader is UNLOCKED and I’m flashing custom roms/kernels everyday :))) And as Natasha stated, we have the most valuable asset over the iphone, we CAN access/edit all kinds of files directly from the phone without having to connect it to the stupid itunes!!!

HTC was sued by Apple over this phone. IMO, it’s because the phone shares many of the drawbacks of the iPhone, but because it’s an Android phone, it’s just better.

absolutely right for me. amazing how the market is ignoring this device, it’s by far the best in terms of case, ergonomy, interface, building quality..

My htc life battery is just working for 20 hours (without working with it), it is mentionable that my charger is not orignally for htc and i use sumsung charger. do you think the charger is the reason for lacking battery life???

You know the real problem with the handset….the camera…the lens or whatever part it is…it bulges outwards….so when you put down the phone on the table with the screen facing up…scratches appear on the glass…which if continues will hamper the picture quality in the future…
and you just compared htc to galaxy…not iphone

I bought the HTC OneX 3 months ago and nothing but problems since. Switches display constantly with imaginary buttons being pressed (especially fun when writing messages), and since 2 days ago it switches on and off without interruption. Tried the reset (press it off for longer times) but to no avail and since the battery can’t be removed there is nothing else to do than leave it switch itself on and off every 30s until it hopefully dies out soon. My worst buy ever.

I was able to remove the battery case, which I’m pretty sure I wasn’t ment to but it did allow me to remove the battery and memory card.

Removable battery is highly important. Imagine you go for a trip for 3.. 4.. 7 days or so. You are gonna be busy and may not have time or the right adapter to charge your phone. Just take two extra batteries (which are really cheap) and you can survive a week without a charger (providing wise using). One battery died – replace it and you have 100% again. I can’t believe they made it non-removable.
Yes, there are other workarounds but it’s just so convenient to replace a battery.

      02/27/2013 at 4:46 am

what you call workaround is a very practical external battery case, which connects through the case contacts (no need to use usb connector!), the phone just slides perfectly in it and you get additional 2100mAh for 22Euro!!

The review is so biased it can’t be taken seriously. In the UK you get 25gb of drop box for free. Also points about non removable battery and customisation apply to the iPhone too. Petty review

As I’m upgrading from a 2 yr old Wildfire which is unrootable, has a mere 512mb internal storage & 2gb additional storage the 16gb on the HTC One X I’ve ordered is immense! I’ve been using minimal apps, & removing bloated one, for the last year! Bigger screen, similar battery life, newer OS, 8x the storage & all internal so I don’t have to worry about which apps I can use from SD, better camera etc etc… Really, if those ‘issues’ are the only thing stopping anyone from getting a One X then they need to get a life!

8 months use now, absolutely perfect! thanks to the unibody I do not need any external case or protection, so the telephone is REALLY slim and fits all my pockets! Unlike galaxy s3 for example, which everybody uses with a case because it is fragile (squeeze it at the sides and listen to the creepy noises!). After updating to 4.1 I get more than 2 days use with everyday wi-fi connections, few phonecals and using it as a jukebox in my car. If more power is required (tablet-like use) just spend 20$ and get a 2200mAh battery case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PWMw9fnWmU
Not to mention the benchmarks (for gamers), and the Nvidia optimized games too!!
the faulty devices were first series, they are all out of the market now since a long time, this phone and it’s boosted brother One X+ are state of the art. Still nobody is buying it, what are you doing you Samsung addicts out there?!? :)
    cheers

Surely biased, foolish article, nit-picking non-issues for 99.99% of users. Fantastic phone. Period.

  56. Jacob

    03/27/2013 at 6:01 pm

That was two reasons… You basically said “No MicroSD slot” twice… No removable storage would rely on a MicroSD slot…

With normal use and handling the phone switches to silent mode meaning many missed calls. This is a design flaw in the volume button yet the company does not stand behind their product.

One year now on HTC one x, veeery powerful and probably the most beautiful non-apple device! Look at the single body, it’s even better than the HTC one :)
