Droid Incredible 2 May Not Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Published

on

In addition to confirming the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update for July or August, HTC has also revealed some news in regards to the Droid Incredible 2 Android 4.0 update saying that it has yet to determine whether Verizon’s 3G smartphone will ever see the update to Google’s latest software.

The company has released its latest Android 4.0 schedule and the Droid Incredible 2 is currently listed as ‘to be determined.’

It says that a decision about whether or not the Droid Incredible 2 will get the software will be made by August. So that means that owners may have a few months to wait until they get an official ruling from HTC. Hopefully, the manufacturer decides much earlier than that, but we can’t be sure.

The news comes shortly after Motorola decided to inform Motorola Droid 3 and Motorola Droid X2 owners, also 3G devices on Verizon, that they would not be getting the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It’s assumed that the 512MB of RAM on both of those devices is what’s holding them back. Motorola seems to only be updating devices with 1GB of RAM.

However, unlike those, the Droid Incredible 2 has 768MB of RAM which bodes well for an update. In addition, the HTC Sensation 4G for T-Mobile also sports 768MB of RAM and it just received Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich a couple of days ago.

So while things might look a little bleak at the moment, there is a very good chance that the Droid Incredible 2 will see the upgrade to Android 4.0 at some point down the road.

Keep in mind, that August date is for a decision, not a roll out, so it could be awhile before the update actually rolls out to the phone.

Does this make you angry, Droid Incredible 2 owners? Or does this give you hope?

I guess what makes me mad is that they originally said the Incredible 2 would definately get ICS https://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/03/14/htc-announces-more-details-for-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-upgrade/

That is making me mad too. And what’s even more stupid is that the Incredible S and the Incredible 2 are the same phone, and the Incredible S is definitely getting ICS. If the Incredible 2 doesn’t get ICS, then they should do what they did with the Incredible S and give it an upgrade to Android 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0 or 3.6.

You obviously interpreted the release wrong IMO. The list is devices that WILL be upgraded. The TBD is in reference to an exact date but by the end of August is my interpretation of it, for Incr. 2. Of course it could be early fall for the update on Incr. 2 as it can take upwards of 45 days for carriers to roll it out.

Agreeing with Mike here. Article author fail. Your interpretation of the release schedule is entirely incorrect.

    Lol.

Wow. For a writer, you really don’t read well. Not only did HTC promise an update for the DInc2, Verizon did as well, so I’m with Mike and Scott. And maybe you should at least check with a source besides the internet before you start an uproar. Customer service for both companies that the update is definitely on, but the timing has not been decided.

Err, well I’m sort of angry about this. Once the upgrade finally rolls out I will be just months away from a free upgrade sooo New iPhone? I think yes!

You scared me, thought my phone may not get the update or won’t at all because of your article, glad I read the comments and went to the schedule link, it obviously says that the Droid Incredible 2 will get the Ice Cream Sandwich update by the end of August.

Uh, that’s not how I read the schedule. It says the update schedule for Dinc2 is to be determined by the end of August. That doesn’t mean we get our update then, just that they’ll tell us when the upgrade might be coming.

No, scratch that, you were right. Sorry!

I have an Incredible 2, and after 1 year of ownership I’m still very happy with it. I recently went from CyanogenMod back to a slightly modified stock w/Sense 3.6. It still operates very quickly and has great battery life. I only want ICS 4.0 on the phone if it will not slow it down. After all it is only 1 Ghz x single core.

I used to care about this issue, but I’m so sick of the fragmented world of Android. As soon as my contract is up this July I’m ditching my Dinc2 in favor of a new iPhone.

Duh, that should have read “next July”‘ as in 2013.

People thinking of going from Droid to iPhone? Tough to do. After five minutes I’d be screaming for a “Back button” and my micro sd slot. Got an iPod touch to take care of my Android frustrations (such as compartmentalizing photos so Facebook posting is a pain for any pix you didn’t use the camera for or crappy e-mail systems)
