iPhone 5 Could Have 3.95-inch, 1136×640 Display

Apple is reportedly testing new iPhone models with larger, taller displays that have a few more pixels than the iPhone 4S display.

According to 9To5Mac, Apple is currently testing two new iPhone models, both with taller 3.95-inch displays. The new displays will allegedly have a resolution of 1136×640. The width is the same, but the height of the screen grows to 3.45-inches, bringing to display closer to a 16:9 ratio as opposed to the current 3:2 ratio.

The new screens add a total of 176 new pixels to the height of the display. Those extra pixels will let Apple add a fifth row of apps to the iPhone homescreen. Apple’s iOS 6 testing also includes apps with extended interfaces, which let users see more information on the screen at once.

The report also claims that Apple’s next iPhone will have a smaller dock connector, but it isn’t the pill-shaped one we heard about before. The new dock connector will be narrower than the current one, and be about the size of Micro-USB and Mini-USB connectors. Apple will introduce the new dock connector on the new iPhone, and bring it out to more iOS devices over time.. We’d love to see Apple adopt the industry-standard Micro-USB, but it seems unlikely.

The next iPhone will also definitely have a home button, according to the report.

Other rumors for the next iPhone include 4G LTE capability, a thiner design, and a new Maps app. As the fall comes closer, we’ll hear more rumors about the next iPhone, and it will start to take shape as some rumors pop up more than others.

Next month at WWDC we’ll likely see some of what Apple has planned for iOS 6, but we likely won’t see the iPhone 5 until September or October.
