Windows Phone 8 Apollo Upgrade Path Gets Cloudier

Published

on

There have been quite a bit of back and forth regarding Windows Phone 8 Apollo and whether it would be coming to current Windows Phone devices. A previous report had said no and now, another report says that current Windows Phone devices will indeed be getting the update.

The latest rumor comes from My Microsoft Life who says that a ‘trusted source’ from Microsoft’s PR firm Waggener Edstrom says that Microsoft will indeed be updating its current crop of Windows Phone devices with Windows Phone 8 Apollo.

The report also goes on to say that leaks will corroborate this information sometime in the weeks ahead.

Of course, this goes against what we previously heard about the Windows Phone 8 update. Paul Thurrott has said in the past that there is positively no way that any current Windows Phone handsets, the Lumia 900 included, will be getting the Apollo update.

In addition, a Windows Phone evangelist took back his remarks that indicated that current handsets would be getting the software.

Another Windows Phone evangelist has said that the Nokia Lumia line of phones including the Lumia 610, Lumia 710 and the Lumia 900 will indeed be getting the software.

So, the situation is as cloudy as ever.

Microsoft, for its part, has done little to clear up the murky situation and instead. It could be because it doesn’t know whether it will upgrade the phones just yet or more, likely, it’s just remaining coy until it officially announces Windows Phone 8 Apollo next month.

Windows Phone 8 is slated to be released later this year and it will be the next big update for Microsoft’s mobile software.

Apollo’s user interface apparently remains similar to that of Windows Phone 7.5 Mango but the touch and speed have apparently been improved.

In addition, the update is said to feature a completely overhauled Internet Explorer – the default browser on Windows Phone, folders, better language support for Chinese, and something the tipster calls “gravity sensing” which might refer to being able to lock the screen orientation.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) support is also supposedly enabled on the test version of the software, but it’s unclear if that will be included in the final version.

And while no devices have been announced just yet, it appears that a Samsung Galaxy S III could arrive later this year with Windows Phone 8 on board.

Microsoft better make current phones be able to update for Apollo! Otherwise that makes Apple more loyal to their customers than Microsoft!
