Verizon Galaxy Nexus Owners Reporting Issues After Update

Published

on

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus update roll out started last week and now, we are getting a better sense of how the update has worked out for some folks.

I was hoping to have my own impressions ready today but I have yet to receive the update from Verizon. In addition, I can’t seem to get the manual update method to work so as of right now, I am stuck on Android 4.0.3.

That being said, I’ve heard from several readers who have received the update from Verizon and for the most part, I’ve heard a lot of good things.

I’ve had a few people tell me that the battery life has improved, I’ve also heard that the lagginess of the UI has all but vanished, I’ve heard a number of people tell me that the microphone issue has been solved and some people have told me that the issues they have been having with the device’s radio have been fixed.

Read: Verizon Galaxy Nexus Update Could Miss the Mark.

It also appears as though the random reboots have been dealt with, at least for some Galaxy Nexus owners.

Again, a majority of folks have had good things to say about the software and that has me fairly optimistic.

Of course, there are always some rotten eggs when it comes to these updates. It’s just a part of life when using Android it seems.

I’ve had a few Galaxy Nexus owners chime in to tell me that they’re still having some issues even after updating the phone to Android 4.0.4.

The most common one seems to be the radio issue. Some Galaxy Nexus owners are still reporting weak signals with the radio. In addition, I’ve heard from a couple of people that have seen the microphone issue arise once again. The microphone issue is one where the mic suddenly cuts out for no reason while on phone calls.

It’s nasty and I’ve had it happen several times.

I’ve also heard from a couple of owners who have seen their device reboot but apparently it doesn’t do it as frequently.

So as of right now, it seems like the update has, for the most part, done its job. However, it seems some people are still seeing issues with the update.

How has your experience been thus far, Galaxy Nexus owners? I’d love to hear from you while I wait on my update to arrive.

It does seem to be more responsive and I haven’t had a reboot…yet.

However, I did already have one call where the mic dropped out on me. Granted it was only one so far, which means while the problem isn’t solved, it has greatly diminished because I used to get it on EVERY call.

I might add that that doesn’t mean the problem isn’t just as annoying. Because it means I still don’t dare make an important call with the phone in fear of the mic drop-out.

So basically I STILL have a smartphone that can’t be used as a phone.

I am just very disappointed to still have the Microphone Issue. It happened today, TWICE during the same call (redials required). What is a guy to do??? I’m not convinced that a refurb will correct my problem. Big Red?… Hello?… Please?…

After accepting the 4.0.4 update, my VZW GNexus (stock) is overall a tad smoother. However, I’ve been having more issues lately with random rebooting than prior receiving the 4.0.4 update. Also, when I turn the screen on by pressing the power button, the screen is dim and becomes brighter after a few seconds – this is actually quite annoying.

Other issues are that my signal has weakened a bit, especially where I did have service and my phone has a difficult time switching from wifi to/from 3g. Lastly, I have Google Wallet side-loaded and it takes longer now for it to process when using it than when I was using 4.0.2.

My nexus is VERY fast and haven’t had any problems with the Microsoft, or signal. I’ve had problems with airplane mode and 4g and 3g switching but the update seemed to fix it all. My keyboard is fast. I don’t understand when people say they have signal issues. I live in a house with a Droid x Droid 3 Droid razr and iPhone 4 and only my nexus gets signal around the house. ALWAYS. Battery life is always bad but that is what a 4g phone is so people should stop complaining. The nexus is by far the best phone on Verizon despite what people say. Its the fastest and has the most features. Verizon has been having allot of problems with 4g towers lately so maybe that’s why people are experiencing signal problems. My nexus is phenomenal.

That’s the truth. The phone is nothing short of a beautiful experience. Most people expect it to be flawless – no phone is. It was the phone with the most hype in 2011, and I am still convinced that it was hyped up for a damn good reason. Just looking at Verizon’s other phones that are out right now, you can easily see that the nexus is the best phone big red has. Sure it had some issues of it’s own. Us users that got it should have expected that, being that it was the only phone that had ICS – an extreme software overhaul. They put it out, we got to enjoy the experience while others had to wait, but we also had to deal with the extra bugs that didn’t get caught in the testing stage. After buying this phone, I might not ever want anything but google’s own phones. The only phone, in my opinion, worth picking over the nexus is this S3 that is coming in July. Kinda wish I could get it, but I couldn’t wait forever… I came from the OG droid! ha.

On Friday the 1st I checked for the update every couple of hours. Just before turning in, i checked one more time, sigh, nothing. I laid in bed wondering why Verizon isn’t forthcoming to their customers and how greedy they are raising fees when they are already making huge profits while I have to take 10 furlough days next year.

I leaned over and gave it one more try and there is was!

My phone is snappier, my hand off issues are gone, I can switch between wifi and cell almost instantly, no more going into airplane mode first. My extended battery now last 2 hours more. It doesn’t run down while the phone is in standby nearly so fast, that what makes the difference.

Nexus users in the Carolina”s from what I have read have some sort of issue with the type of radio in the phone and the type of cell towers used there causing the one way call issue. Verizon should replace those phones with new Razr HD when they come out to make up for the inconvenience they have caused.

Currently on the phone with Verizon. Spent the morning in NYC a 4G connectivity area and had the device radio completely drop signal repeatedly. This is the third GNEX device Verizon has sent me. What is going on with the radio of this phone?

      Ryan,

Are you dropping to no bars of signal? In high traffic areas your call can be diverted to a less crowded cell tower requiring more power from your phones radio and increased likely hood of loosing signal. Another person right next to you could be on the closer tower and work better. I would try a Razr to see if you have better results to eliminate your phone.

The update has not helped two issues: (1) the mic still cuts out; (2) my phone repeatedly dials *22899 when I’m on the US Cellular network instead of V e rizon’s network. This forces me to put the phone in airplane mode and forward phone calls to my home because I am on UD Cellular’snetwork. If I don’t forward calls, my battery fully drains within several hours.

Radio issue has not been solved. Seems like the signal is dropping at the same rate as before the update.

Same issues here. Signal quality for data is horrible. Car keep a connection for streaming audio… Back out goes. Connectivity is now worse than before update

Ever since the 4.0.4 update the volume of my calls over bluetooth undulates and makes it impossible to hear the person on the other end. I had no issues with call quality before the update, and calls over the handset speaker or wired headphones are fine, just my Jawbone Icon BT headset is now unusable.

Ever since the 4.0.4 update I’ve had nothing but radio problems. Wifi will not stay connected, and phone loses both 3g and 4g signal easily. Data connectivity is horrible and it’s almost impossible to stream audio. This update is awful.

Happy for those who have great performance. This is a beautifully designed device and ICS is a great OS. Had to switch back to my Thunderbolt because of terrible connectivity issues with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. 4.04 update didn’t help and it actually may be worse. Dropped calls, dropped signal, no signal, and no service. I’m beginning to believe that it may be more of hardware issue than a software issue. No issues whatsoever since going back to the Thunderbolt. Will exchange the Nexus and hope for the best. I really like it, but I have to have a phone I can depend on.

I have the most recent software update, and I am still getting mic issues during calls and dropped calls daily. This update has done nothing to improve the issues. I can’t rely on this phone at all for making or receiving phone calls which is what a phone is for. This is ridiculous. I can’t believe how much this phone costs and how big of a nightmare it has been. I bought this phone the day it came out, and for 6 months now it has been a horrible experience. I love the phone itself, but if it can’t make phone calls without the mic cutting out, and it constantly drops calls, what is the point in owning this phone if it doesn’t work?

I am having problems with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus even after the 4.0.4 update. My phone only randomly rebooted once, but the battery life is horrible. I have to recharge my phone 5 times per day minimum and that’s with the 2100mAH extended battery. I attribute all of my problems to the radio. The radio signal bounces from 4 bars to 0 bars all day long. The radio also jumps back and forth from 3G to 4G whether if I am using the Internet or not. The data will stall badly. I have the issue with the mic cutting out during phone calls. My friends tell me that during a call I am there one moment and gone the next. I didn’t know what the issue was until I read about similar reports with other people. I also have poor Wifi range, the Wifi data stalls, MMS messages do not download and Google play store does not update apps when WIFI is turned on. This is the worst phone I have ever had, but I love the HD screen. Even the store reps witnessed how terrible my phone was with the poor signal and data stalls, and they told me that the 4.0.4 update would fix my problems. That was obviously a lie. I would leave Verizon but I get Unlimited talk/text/10GB of data each month for 100 bucks. I am in the Jackson, MS, market. I am hoping that another update will be released to fix these issues. I might purchase the HTC Rezound off Ebay because I am afraid that my plan will change to these new shared data plans if I sign another contract. I really want the Motorola Droid Razr HD. Plus, I heard that the Rezound has an excellent radio.

@the author. Rotten Eggs? Seriously? I’m a rotten egg because I still have freaking issues after the update? And that I am annoyed and want it fixed pronto? Give me a break man!

Really? You’re taking rotten egg personally? Even though it’s a common phrase meant to imply that there are always going to be some people having problems with any technical device??

If he said a car you bought was a lemon, do you seriously think he’s calling YOU a lemon??

Have 4.04 and am still having gray bars / data connectivity issues. Even n; Portland I often get no data. Sure I can make a call but my old flip phone could do that. I expect at minimum that my Nexus to get a decent data connection in Portland. The radio on these phones sucketh.

My Nexus still has to same problems it has had from the start. It just simply hate LTE. No matter how.strong the.signal.or.how.many.times.I.reboot the phone it will.drop.the.LTE data and LTE side; of.the phone with: in a few.minutes and.goes.searching.for.service. The sim card.has been changed by Verizon close to 10 times along.with.the phone.4 times. What the problem is Verizon seems to be at.a.total.loss. With this.extremely bad experiance I can not.see myself purchasing another android phone its a real.shame.to because the OS is great it is Verizon’s lack of.support or knowledge of the OS that will.keep.me.away.

Just got my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus, stocked with 4.0.4 firmware (Kernel: 3.08-gda625b)…

It seems to flip flop between 4G and 3G… signal bars grayed out and back after about a minute in strong signal areas.

IMO, the phone seems to grab at a network present, and drop signal as the transition happens. I’ve had dropped calls.

I am going to look into setting it to 3G only to see if it handles better.

My Galaxy Nexus was working fine since I got it last year Sep, I’ve never have the weak signal problem. However, not sure if it is due to the upgrade or whatever reason (since I went to Vegas), I started to have the signal problem that a lot of users have experienced. And I am on the latest version 4.0.4. I am going to receive my 2nd replacement tomorrow.

Just received Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus ordered from Best Buy due to price (free with new contract). 4G seems outstanding, when it works. More often than not I get “Mobile network not available” and can’t make calls. Best Buy rep had real trouble programming the phone, then when I went out side the store, it didn’t work. I went from there to Verizon store and they spent quite a bit of time, first turning off the network, then restarting it. Still no Mobile network and no phone calls, so they went back to work on it, swapped out the sim card, couldn’t get the new sim card to program, finally stuck the sim card in a different stock phone and programmed it, then swapped it back in to my phone. After that it seemed fine for the rest of the day, but this morning, “no mobile network available”. I think I’m going to take it back to Best Buy and pay bucks and get an I-Phone. I don’t need these headaches for the next two years.

Having a similar problem as Gary. I got the JB update last night and have been out of service since. For some reason, JB destroyed my entire mobile network. I even got a new SIM card and nada. Now I have to go back tomorrow and spend my time waiting for a replacement.

I bought the Galaxy Nexus the very first day it came out. Had no problems for about 6 months then the would randomly go into charge mode without being plugged in. This caused charge screen to come on and drain the battery in about 5 minutes. I got a replacement and it worked fine for about 1 month and now it keeps cutting out during calls. I don’t know if this is the microphone problem that every one is talking about but during calls the screen flashes on when there voice cuts out. the other party also say that I am cutting out. This is so bad I have to hang up every time and use a land line. This happens on 100% of my calls. Yes, every single one. I am expecting my third replacement phone in the mail today. I can only hope it don’t do the same thing.
