Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date: What to Expect in June Adam Mills06/19/2012 The anticipation of the Motorola Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich update release date has hit its peak. Verizon has released a test build which may be the final version of the Android 4.0 update and Motorola has imposed a second quarter release date leaving it until the end of June to roll out the software. Needless to say, Droid RAZR owners are antsy, especially after the saga that took place up to this point.Advertisement The Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich update release date has been rumored for months now and it took an especially strange twist when Verizon purportedly sent out text messages saying that it was coming soon only to have users say that it informed them that it was spam only to have the carrier deny that they were spam. That being said, it’s our hope that the release date for Ice Cream Sandwich is indeed close and we wanted to take a look at what to expect from it when it finally does arrive for Droid RAZR owners. Advertisement All Signs Point to June While Verizon’s support account is spewing out nonsense on the regular, we do expect Verizon to push the update out during the second quarter of 2012, just as Motorola promised. This is an update that was promised many months ago and users have been told that it would finally roll out in Q2.Advertisement June is the last month in that Q2 window, a quarter that encompasses April and May as well. We saw release dates for the Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich update pop up last month a couple of times so we know that Motorola and Verizon are hard at work on the update. We also know that Verizon has released a test build that might just be the final version that will roll out to the masses. With that evidence in hand, it appears that an update is close and Verizon still has sometime before June ends.Advertisement Don’t Expect Much of a Heads-Up Again, Verizon is one of the worst when it comes to information regarding Android updates. It informs customers on occasion but mostly, it remains silent and leaves its customer service representatives out to dry. Yesterday, a customer service rep using Verizon’s support account on Twitter said that they were not aware that Motorola had imposed a Q2 release window. What’s clear is that only a few people actually know what’s going on and those few people seem reluctant to release any sort of information to the public at large. This does not translate well for customers and means that we likely won’t hear about a release date until hours before the software rolls out. Not pleasant, but that’s how Verizon rolls.Advertisement Over-the-Air When the update does become available, we expect that it will arrive Over-the-Air aka OTA. This means two things. One, it might be a staggered roll out. That means that some users might see it before others. In the case of a popular roll out like the Droid RAZR ICS update, Verizon may opt to do this to ensure that the software is running properly. Should this be the case, some Droid RAZR owners might be waiting for a few days.Advertisement It’s also possible that Verizon will make the update available immediately which will require Droid RAZR owners to go into the device settings and check for an update. If the software is available, owners will receive a prompt. Keep in mind, this is a large update and that could mean that the installation process will be a little more lengthy than the usual software update. A Better Phone After the Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich release date has come and gone, owners should expect to be possession of a better phone. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will bring a ton of new features to the table but Verizon also usually loads the updates up with major bug fixes as well.
