How to Create Website Shortcuts on the iPhone Homescreen

Users who visit a favorite website often on the iPhone should be happy to know that it’s easy to add the website shortcut to the iPhone homescreen right next to their favorite apps.

Most website shortcuts look just like an app on the iPhone, so the shortcuts won’t look out-of-place.

These website shortcuts can also be placed in folders for organization or on the iPhone dock for constant access.

Websites don’t need to do anything special to support this feature, so users can easily create website shortcuts for any site.

How to Create Website Shortcuts on the iPhone

Open up safari and head to the website that you would like to make a shortcut for.

For demonstration purposes we will use GottaBeMobile.

Once you are there tap on the Share button at the bottom of the screen.

Next the iPhone will show these options. Tap Add to Home Screen

Add to Home Screen

You can then change the name of the icon to what you would like it to display as and press Add in the top right corner

Rename your shortcut

After you tap this the iPhone will add a shortcut to the iPhone’s Home Screen.

Web Shortcut

Now you have an easy way to add shortcuts to your home screen for quick access to your favorite sites.

Users who regularly need to switch to the full version of a website should create a Home Screen shortcut to the full version of the site, which will skip the mobile version when launched.

Its like you learn my thoughts! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I feel that you could do with some p.c. to drive the message house a little bit, however instead of that, this is great blog. A fantastic read. I’ll certainly be back.

    Hey,
Great post! I have a question that maybe you could help me with though:
    Im creating a web-service that will open a new window and close the window with an onclick event using self.focus();self.close();
It works fine when I access the page from safari but if I go to it through a homescreen shortcut the functionality fails. Any idea why?
