AT&T: Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich Update Will Be Available Again Soon

Published

on

While the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II update is currently unavailable, the carrier says that it will become available again soon.

In a statement today, AT&T stated that it was testing the update on its servers and that was the reason that the update was available for a moment and then vanished. The carrier did not mention the fact that Samsung Kies, the software that AT&T and Samsung are using to push the update, is currently undergoing maintenance today.

It’s possible that the two are related but if so, the carrier isn’t saying.

Here is AT&T’s full statement in regards to the delayed Galaxy S II update:

We plan for the upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for Galaxy S II customers to be live very soon.  Like with every OS update, we test it on our servers before we roll it out to customers.  We’re in the process of doing that with Android 4.0 (ICS) for Galaxy S II customers and hope to make that live soon.  We recommend customers wait to attempt the update.

So, it appears that the Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich update will become available again “soon.” Unfortunately, this is an American carrier and their definition of soon often does not match up with the regular definition of the word.

Hopefully, AT&T stays true to its word and releases the update to anxious AT&T Galaxy S II owners in the near future.

The update originally became available through Samsung Kies yesterday with several owners confirming that the update was available. However, it soon became apparent that something was up because several other owners let us know that the update was no longer accessible through Samsung’s software.

It seems like there is always something with a major Android update isn’t there? They never seem to roll out smoothly when they finally do decide to roll out.

In any event, stay patient AT&T Galaxy S II owners. It’ll be back soon. We hope.

Perhaps they’re waiting for Samsung to get their act together and release a version of Kies for the Mac that will actually allow software updates? Just guessing – as that is what my version (the latest available) is telling me it can’t do. When I start Kies and connect my Galaxy, in the “Basic Information” tab I see:

“Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies”.

After speaking to a couple Samsung tech support folks, what it really boils down to is that the version of KIES I’m running does not support software upgrading. They said that version 2.0+ is required for that – the latest Mac version is 1.3.0.12062_4).

Your phone is perfectly functional with the OS installers currently. You’re crying because they are in the process of rolling out the update and you saw a glimpse of it last night? Your “I need it right now gimme gimme gimme nothing but perfection is acceptable I deserve to not be inconvenienced in any way” entitled instant gratification bullsh@t attitude is exactly what’s wrong with this generation. You sound like a spoiled toddler. Grow up.

I think I hear your mommy calling you to hurry up and wait for life to pass you by! Be patient little one, and let mommy change your diaper!

When you’re paying this much to make a phone call and surf the web, INSTANT GRATIFICATION IS YOUR RIGHT!

That’s nice and all but nothing you said makes any sense. Life isn’t passing anyone by, his phone still works perfectly fine with the OS that’s installed yet he’s complaining like a spoiled toddler about something that will introduce mostly aesthetic features like he is somehow being inconvenienced or its actually worth anyone’s time complaining about.

You’re able to make a phone call and surf the web RIGHT NOW. What exactly are you complaining about? Is the software version on your perfectly functional phone really the biggest thing you overgrown manchildren can come up with the be concerned about of all the things wrong with this world?

Again, this is exactly what’s wrong with this generation.

why cant this be as easy as itunes and the iphone, this is a pain in the a$$!!! ughhh!!

@Samueul @Jose, It’s not as easy as iTunes and the iPhone because Samsung is not Apple (and thank God for that.) Irregardless of whether this phone as ICS or not, it is still more fully-functional with Gingerbread than the iPhone is with iOS6. Until Apple gives me more choice, I will never go back to the iPhone.

        @Josh,
If you meant “more fully featured with Gingerbread” rather than “fully functional”, I might have believed you – although iOS6 isn’t out yet, so you’re hardly in a position to comment on its functionality either.

I’ve had my Galaxy S2 for 9 months now (replacement for iPhone 3GS – I thought I’d give Android a try). I’m ready to throw in the towel. The hardware itself is beautiful – great screen, slim as heck, fast. But as with many things, you have to look at the whole package: (1) the battery runs out before the day is done – and I’m just talking about a day of occasional web surfing and mail retrieval – no video!. I am so frustrated with that. I had to get in the habit of shutting off wifi/gps whenever I didn’t use them and set the screen brightness lower than I’d really like….I don’t really know or care whether it’s the battery capacity or some app connecting to the servers to often – all I know is that it’s a hassle I didn’t have with the iPhone. (2) you have to wait eons to get software updates with Android – because they’re rolled out whenever the carrier feels like it rather than when the update is ready (and that’s mainly after they’ve adapted their crap/bloat-ware for the new version).

I won’t repeat the hassle of Samsung having such a crappy piece of software (Kies) for doing the updates.

All these things conspire to make the *overall* system less satisfying, less functional to people who just want things to work (i.e. geeks – I’m one too, but not when it comes to cell phones).

That’s funny… they both (AT&T and Samsung) told me there were no immediate plans for this update.

@ EVERYBODY WHO THINKS THEY’RE “SIT AND WAIT” ATTITUDE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR EVERYBODY! FU! I pay $180 a month for service for my 2 Skyrocket phones for unlimited everything, so if my GIMMIE GIMMIE RIGHT NOW attitude doesn’t suit you, you can SUCK IT! The cost per month that I pay gives me that right to want it all, and want it now! If AT&T keeps up this crap, I’m voting with my feet and walking to a different carrier. Samuel is right. This is frustrating BULL$&!T! Take a good look at the samsung kies site! They still have a sign up that says that they will be down, FOR YESTERDAY! BULL$H1T!

When I pay this much to make a call, surf the web and send the occasional text, and AT&T is just NOW “THINKING” about rolling out ICS, that’s unacceptable. The firmware has been out since LAST YEAR! And most of the reason that it’s been so late is so they can load it up with their own damn bloatware!

We should be able to download an unmodified copy of WHATEVER VERSION of the google android os we want, and throw it on these phones and modify it to how WE see fit, and we should be able to do so, THE DAY THE FIRMWARE IS RELEASED FROM GOOGLE! It’s an open source OS, and these idiot carriers are making it so only they can control what you put on YOUR phone.

Google’s Android OS was meant to be open source. So why isn’t it?! Why are we stuck, having to wait for AT&T?

There are plenty of other options. If you’re this unhappy then switch carriers already. AT&T made no promises and neither did Samsung for that matter as to when this update would be available. Just because you purchased the phone does not give you a right to have every update. But you’re right about one thing, it is indeed open source. Root your phone and install a modified OS. The second you purchased a phone through AT&T you gave up your right to have a 100% open source OS because of the proprietary nature of every carrier on the planet. Read the fine print. Apple, for example, knew the nature of updates through carriers and all the branding and bloat-loading that takes place: hence their forcible decision to keep the hardware and OS separate from the carrier and not allow any kind of branding. And guess what, people complained about that! :) So which is it? You obviously can’t have both. Take a step back and actually try to understand how many devices there are, how many people own these different devices, and how much work is actually involved in getting every compatible device updated. Not to mention marketing tactics such as pushing sales for a newer device before updating an older one. If your game is all about making money, which is the case in every business (that’s why they call it a business by the way), you might think twice about your next purchase.

If you want the latest and greatest from Google… get the Nexus. That’s the only phone they control entirely.

If none of this makes sense or doesn’t sit well with your personal understanding of how carriers operate then there’s really no hope for you. You obviously have MUCH larger issues than an Android update.

Your “gimmie gimmie” attitude is indicative of your lack of maturity. The truth is nothing is ever good enough for people like you. You think you are so important and your $180 is so much money that you are entitled to the world. ICS is fluff, its not mandatory. Your phone works fine without it. You just WANT it. Of everything in this world that deserves attention you think the version of the OS on your perfectly functional phone is important enough to get worked up over.

      It’s just sad.

Also, instead of having everything sppon fed to you maybe you should go look into what you’re talking about.

ICS has been available for MONTHS on your skyrocket. Android is open source and there are people independent of your carrier and manufacturer working on it. If you really wanted ICS that bad get it yourself instead of expecting to be babied and complaining like a baby.

Or just switch carriers/manufactures without throwing a tantrum like a manchild an move on with your life. Jesus.
