Toshiba Thrive and Thrive 7 Ice Cream Sandwich Release Dates Delayed

Published

on

Toshiba promised Ice Cream Sandwich for its Toshiba Thrive and Thrive 7 tablets sometime this spring, however, it looks like the manufacturer is not going to be able to deliver on that promise.

In a post today, the company confirmed that the Toshiba Thrive and Thrive 7 Ice Cream Sandwich release dates have both been delayed until sometime during the fall months of 2012.

Toshiba has not offered any specifics beyond that so this means that tablet owners could potentially be waiting several months before Ice Cream Sandwich finally arrives for their device.

It looks like Thrive tablet owners will have to wait for ICS.

Clearly, this is not the news that Thrive and Thrive 7 owners wanted to hear, but trust us, this is probably for the best. It’s clear that the updates weren’t ready for either device and there is no sense in releasing software that isn’t ready.

That being said, there are definitely some Thrive owners who are worried that the update might never roll out. We hope that Toshiba is able to clear their consciences sooner rather than later.

Until then though, owners are going to have to deal with rumors and mystery and uncertainty, something that has become the norm in the world of major Android software upgrades.

Owners will also have to deal with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, an operating system that was replaced by Ice Cream Sandwich last year and will soon be overshadowed by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google’s next piece of mobile software that is expected to be announced at Google I/O next week and possibly released shortly afterwards.

Certainly not a fun predicament to be in, is it Thrive owners?

The promise of ICS within several weeks was a major reason I purchased a Thrive 10.1. Honeycomb is simply not a stable OS. Wouldn’t surprise me at this point if Toshiba never delivers ICS for these devices.

Guess I’ll start looking at tablets that do offer ICS NOW, and maybe even….GASP!…give ipad “3” a relook.

No more Toshiba for me. “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice….”

I’ve had my Thrive since thanksgiving last year and loved it from the moment I bought it. I was extremely happy when Toshiba said they would update to ICS. I’ve been waiting rather patiently only to find it will be released some time after Google launches Jelly Bean. My HP Touchpad runs on ICS and will probably run on Jelly Bean long before my Thrive will have ICS. That being said, I don’t think i’ll be looking at the Excite much more as a upgrade unit.

Toshiba F’d me and I’ve already sold my tablet. Have an IPad now and it’s a much better machine. I do miss the USB ports though.

I must say that I’m very disappointed in all you Thrive owners. You all act like this is the first time that a company has promised an update not delivered. Actually I don’t think that an Android OS update has ever been released at the time that it was promised, you guys are obviously not true Android lovers like me. you guys gotta have faith, I know that to see you both will either give us ice cream sandwich or jelly bean they will not forget about the original Thive. I dislike honeycomb as much as you guys but it is in no way unstable and I would take my thrive over a bunch of the new tablets out just because of the usb an hdmi ports. until the drive has been passed up we still have the possibility of a good update. My Thrive works awesome and I love it, maybe you guys are using it wrong. If you’re really unhappy ROOT the damn thing. All I’m saying is give Toshiba a chance, they might be skipping ICS all togetherand just hooking us up with JellyBean. I’m giving them until the end of 2012, if the Thrive doesn’t get an update by then I’ll just had over to the Toshiba HQ and burn that F’n place to the ground. The 1 thing I will never do is switch to an iPad. F Apple, Android I’d the best OS I’ve ever used. Don’t let us down Toshiba, we all took a chance on the Thrive. When everyone was bashing it for bring too big and bulky we overlooked that because we wanted the USB and HDMI. UPDATE THE THRIVE 10.1 OR THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.

In a world of competitors, Toshiba should be trying to stay ahead of the curve rather than 2 revisions behind it (Jelly Bean ref). This is nothing about being a true “Android Lover”. It is about hoping a company would be as eager as its user-base to see new features. At least with Apple, I know if and when my device will receive its latest update. At least google has started releasing its own devices now. Maybe this crap-shoot will be remedied that way.

I love my thrive. It is by far the best tablet out there. I’ll be happy to wait a few more months for ics. To be honest, I don’t see the big point in upgrading, it does what I want already!

I for one would like to have a iPad BUT since Apple has locked that sucker down tighter than Fort Knox, I opted for a tablet with some flexibility & the Thrive fits that like a glove. Expandable memory, usb slots, HDMI, etc. I mainly use my Thrive for reviewing photos straight out of my camera while I’m out on a shoot & I can’t do that with iPad.

See, these 2 guys know what I’m talking about. The Thrive is a great tablet as is but because I know that it can handle ICS or JellyBean I do expect at LEAST 1 update. I mean come on Toshiba…..you can’t leave us with Honeycomb. ICS or JellyBean would be better then Honeycomb and then the Thrive would stay a high/middle end tablet, God I love these ports. I can actually throw this thing in its stand that’s hooked to my Samsung 55”Smart LED TV, plug in my GoogleTV wireless mouse and control movies like I own the joint! I’m watching full 1080p/720p movies b4 they’re even on DVD!I am a connectivity GOD! TT4E……(Toshiba Thrive 4 Ever)

I’m very disappointed with toshiba. The the hardware of my thrive is good but being two versions of android behind is unacceptable. I suggest no one buy toshiba tablets, go for something more mainstream that open source developers will create upgrading roms for such as the samsung tablets. I’m considering selling my thrive and buying one of the new Google tablets that are coming.

My advice to toshiba: open source all of your work so devs can access the drivers and even provide them support so they can make your devices worth owning.

I have a thrive and am amazed by its quality. I am definatly not in love with honeycomb at tkmes but its actually only one android version behind until jellybean actually comes out.

The USB & HDMI ports, the replaceable battery and the near indestructible case still make me a Thrive fan. I went through four phones with disappointment while waiting with frustration for the HTC Thunderbolt. Did Samsung ever get froyo for the Fascinate? This waiting game is nothing new.

Thoshiba components line for ipad is by large much more prefitable than Thrive line.
Just you wonder why thoshiba has let you down, poor thrive owners?
Tou are expendable, thats it. No more no less.
All I fell sorry for is that japanese honour, that has fell down to the dirt on behalve of the dollar empire master.
What a pity, shame on you Toshiba… Hideyasu is revolving on his grave, do not doubt it…

Plain and simple no company cares anymore about its customer base. Once you buy the product they have your money. In electronics they have a 6month window. ICS comes out and Toshiba Excite rolls out. Jelly Bean arrives and anew tablet will be here too. No upgrades no matter how loyal you are. They want you to buy a new tablet instead. So settle with what you have. Change companies if your not happy but like McDonalds someone will always be there to take your place.

I for one love my Thrive and will wait for the upgrade. Honestly its a great tablet with a variety of features. Battery life is great after a year and if I need to replace, it’s a lot cheaper than an I pad or other tablets. Quit bashing Toshiba.

I will never buy a Toshiba tablet again… I could have paid any hacker on the internet to developed this in a month. What…do they have a bunch of ignoramous interns working on this. And saying it probably better if its not ready, that’s not the point it should have been ready. I don’t pay large sums of money for stupid non-updatable hardware…should have bought a Samsung…ipad …or dare I say it…a windows tablet.

This is what happens with companies that have no concern for the saps that buy their crappy products. Google will ultimately be marginalized because they do not control any aspect of android OS so these companies put out a product that is outdated as soon as it comes out and never gets updated. Tablets are a fad that will disappear. No one is going to pay this kind of money with no support, period.

Perhaps the only thing that Toshiba will understand is a class action suit for false advertising. That would encourage Toshiba to take care of their customers.

Have own a thrive since they first came out of Canada love the product but if they come out with another product I will switch companies as easy as I bought and give the Toshiba to my grandkids to use as a toy my research will look for a company that supports there products and go with them instead of waiting for update then if it is not any better will sell this device or use it add a media player nice product horrible support that’s what I have to say.

it is indeed a little poor that Toshiba is dragging the chain so speak on a firmware upgrade to ICS/whatever. However I have had no particular problems with the current OS. I basically bought it on special (Thrive 7 equiv. in Oz) for $249 just before a trip to Korea to basically carry my travel guides around on PDF. It worked admirably for that essentially single purpose and will shortly do so again in Spain-type. For wireless stuff I can also use my Ipod/Touch so it is a case of horses for courses – not to mention my laptop. It is ideal for doing away with a pile of guidebooks for travel and the 7 inch is much more usable over all than a bulkier 10 inch. Techno-tragics/upgraders will always want the next best thing – myself I just adjust to what I have and enjoy what it does do, rather than weep over the latest fastest processor or OS which I lack.

I had 2 of these and sold them. I love the Toshiba Thrive and Android. Yeah there’s much better operating systems in ICS and Jelly Bean, and Toshiba should not have made a commitment when they couldn’t follow through with it. The first one I bought for $255.00, the second for $230, and the last for $190.00. Yeah I bought another one after selling my first 2. I wanted a 10 inch e-reader with full-size HDMI and USB conectivity. I also wanted it because it has a replaceable battery, and full-size SD card slot. No other tablet currently has all these features. But, like I said, mainly I wanted an e-reader. For a great tablet, nothing beats my Galaxy S3 cell phone. :D
