Verizon Adds 46 4G LTE Markets, Now Covers More Than 300 Markets

Verizon’s 4G LTE rollout continues as the carrier brings its fast data network to more almost four dozen new markets today.

The latest rollout brings Verizon 4G LTE to 46 new markets across the country, including a number of small cities and at least a few college towns. The rollout also expands the 4G LTE network in 22 existing 4G LTE markets including New York City, Philadelphia, Denver, and Seattle.

The rollout means more Verizon customers can take full advantage of the latest smartphones on the network. With the exception of the iPhone 4S, all of the top smartphones on Verizon support 4G LTE.

The only downside is all of Verizon’s 4G LTE smartphones are Android phones. There’s a lot of choices among the Android phones from the Droid RAZR MAXX to the upcoming Galaxy S III, but users that want 4G LTE Windows Phones or iPhones on Verizon have to wait. (Although, everyone has to wait for a 4G LTE iPhone because Apple hasn’t announced such a phone yet.)

The network rollout will also help iPad WiFi + Cellular owners. Verizon new iPad users can finally take advantage of the super-fast 4G LTE data speeds in the new markets. The network will make using the iPad outside a WiFi area a lot nicer, but users should make sure they don’t accidentally run over their data caps.

I’m intrigued at some of their choices, like Ashland, KY and Danville, VA. Danville is part of the poorest county in Virginia, I believe, as it was highlighted for having an IKEA subsidiary there.

I tried LTE the other day. I was trying to download something of about 848 MB. The local Verizon 3G network is horribly overwhelmed and it was reporting anywhere up to 1 day for the remaining 700 MB. I took everything to fairly close LTE area, got pizza, and downloaded the rest in about 20 minutes. That wasn’t exactly the fastest but it was a huge improvement over the 6 hours at which the EVDO network had become comfortable.

I live in western Wyoming – admittedly not a population center. Verizon currently has 4 3G cellular towers in Sublette County, an area bigger than some states. I’m glad they’re expanding 4G coverage, but I wish I had reliable coverage at home and at work. Unfortunately, AT&T has much better coverage around here.
