Gamestop Ready for Google Nexus 7 Release Date

Published

on

Google already asked two retailers to stop selling the Nexus 7 ahead of the official release date, and the Nexus 7 release date remains unclear, but that doesn’t mean retailers aren’t ready to sell the Nexus 7.

Phandroid reports that Gamestop stores have the Nexus 7 tablet in stock and are ready to sell Google’s first Nexus tablet, they’re just waiting on the official word from Google.

Let’s hope Google gives the go ahead soon, because Gamestop could be a key partner in catapulting the Nexus 7 to success.

Google Nexus 7

The Google Nexus 7 is in stock at Gamestop, waiting for Google’s OK to go on sale.

Like Office Depot, Gamestop’s backrooms are filled with Nexus 7 boxes waiting to be sold to eager shoppers, but there is still no official release to sell. Unlike games, which typically have a set street date, Google is still trying to determine when the Nexus 7 will launch.

The following memo instructs Gamestop employees to “Disregard any previously mentioned street dates for this item.”, and to wait for further instructions.

Nexus 7 release date at Gamestop

The Nexus 7 release date at Gamestop remains unknown, but they are in stock.

While Google can’t commit to a launch date, there is good news from these retailer leaks. We know that the $25 Google Play credit is available to shoppers who purchase from Gamestop or Office Depot.

Even better, the Nexus 7 will be in retail stores where shoppers can go hands on. I laughed when I learned Office Depot would be a retail launch location because of waning locations nationwide, but I’m excited to hear that Gamestop is on board.

Gamestop retail store

Being able to touch the Nexus 7 tablet at Gamestop could drive sales.

A retail presence is important for the success of the Nexus 7, and a demo unit in every Gamestop is about as good as it gets. Consumers need to play with the new tablet, to touch it, to form a connection and make a purchase. According to research in the Journal of Consumer Research, shoppers who touch products will pay more for them.

In Apple Stores, the computers are set up to tempt users to touch them and I’m betting there’s a bit of retail science to the angle and placement of the iPad as well.

Gamestop is no stranger to enticing users to touch products. Look around the typical store and you’ll find three to five functioning game consoles and portable gaming devices. Unlike many big box stores, these demos are almost always operational, and packed with a game or demo shoppers would actually want to play.

I’m hopeful Gamestop will stock up the Google Nexus 7 with the same diligence.

You cannot pre-order it online at GameStop anymore at that link. Nor find it if you do a search for “Nexus” or “Nexus 7” (though you will get a hit for a ZAG screen protector, BIG WOOP!!)

This could mean they are either out of the item (online), haven’t updated to a new page taking off the “Pre-Order” message as (so I have heard) the Google Play pre-orders have started to ship or they were told to stop and are waiting on further word by Google. See below link:

I just now got a text message (while reading this article lol) saying my nexus 7 pre-order from gamestop will be ready for pickup today when they open. Here is the exact text. “Gamestop:Your Google Nexus 7 order avail Fri AM. Bring your trades to reduce price. Info# 888-446-9209”. I might try to pick it up this afternoon to validate

I think its BS that brick and mortar establishments are getting and selling the item before individuals who preordered from google play receive their item. I ordered mine from google play on the date it was released for preorder and still have nothing from google telling me where mine is… very poorly handled IMO

Just got a text from Gamestop, those who pre-order can pick one up today, July 13. Count me one of them but unfortunately traveling and won’t be able to pick one up till Monday since the store credit and stock are base on where you made the pre-order. :( :(

I should have known pre-ordering from the play store was a bad idea. I submitted my pre-order June 28th, and have heard nothing about it shipping and now people are picking them up from stores. Last time I go directly through google for a device…

It don’t bother me too much that people are getting there’s before those who pre-ordered from google, I’m just impatient and google need to hurry up and tell us when ours are coming! :'(

I’m not mad, just have been extremely excited since I heard the first talks about this back in november/december and have been waiting for it since then. Just wish I would not have jumped the gun and pre-ordered so soon thinking that play store pre-orders would go out first and waited to pre-order someplace I could have picked it up locally. Not only am I getting it after people, but I paid nearly $15 for shipping to receive it after others that didnt have to pay any shipping.

Got mine at GameStop. Received text and went to store. Nice and quick and a nice discount on receipt of $99,750. Lol

That’s freaking crazy. We stand on our toes for the pre-order page, pay $15 for shipping and another $15 for taxes, and the store down the road is just passing them out while mine could’ve been forgotten about for all I know. I’m not impatient, but this is freaking bizarre. -1 for Google.

Just set a Street Release Date next time and avoid your mess.

Given my experience I have my reservations on ordering anything through google play in the future, which is unfortunate considering the device I ordered (which I’m unable to cancel as of now) is designed for the play store.

      07/13/2012 at 9:06 am

Totally agree. The policy governing canceling N7 orders appears to be in place in anticipation of this debacle happening and Google not wanting to have a surge of cancelations from people that decide to just go to a local store to pick it up instead. Totally a -10 for Google on this one.

Another one here, I ordered mine within minutes of the page going live on the 27th and here I sit and wait……..I will think twice before ordering from Play again.

I prefer mine too, through play store but got a wif of store credit at gamestop and no s&h. Cancelled immediately after that!

This is the worst pre order ever on earth! I pre ordered mine from play store and absolutely furious that not even a shipping confirmation has being sent yet! Shame on Google!

What pisses me off the most is that I’ve called 3 of the local gamestops in my area and each of them have told me they’ve sold the first “Wave” of tablets to people in store who preordered by the 11th.. i ordered mine last month and still don’t even have SHIPPING INFO! Oh but Google has kindly charged my card for the full amount like they’ve shipped the damn thing! Either gamestop employees cannot read “DO NOT SELL” or simply do not give a fuck what google says. This is the last time i order anything hardware related from the play store, next time learn how a preorder is supposed to work GOOGLE, YOU’RE LOSING BUSINESS BECAUSE OF IT.

It plastered everywhere that the pre orders through google have began shipment as of today and will carry on the next for the next 3 days, and we’ll receive an email to confirm and tracking details. I don’t know how true it is but I think this might be the finale to all this drama

      07/13/2012 at 1:57 pm

sadly though you will get it as week after those who purchased it through gamestop and will have paid more for the privilege of waiting

        07/13/2012 at 2:12 pm

Exactly, theres people all over the U.S. who have the nexus in their hands since THIS MORNING, as well as the $25 play store credit and weren’t charged shipping at all, and they ordered through a 3rd party retailer at a date after the play store preorders… Google has really screwed over their loyal customers.

Since the Play Store is the only place to get the 8GB Nexus 7, Game Stop or anyone else selling it is a none issue. I would have paid more, for the 16GB, than I paid for the 8GB in the play store. If I ordered the 16GB, I can see being pissed, but I didn’t

I work for Office Depot. We do NOT have Nexus 7’s just sitting in our backrooms. Office Depot does not give their stores enough space in the back rooms to just store stuff for whenever it might go on sale. Please stop believing all of this crap and just be patient. I’m sure it’s coming, but it’s not here yet!!!

Will be shipped this week. The pre-orders placed after July 11th will be shipped next
Week. All shipments have been upgraded to overnight delivery. :-)
