Sprint HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich Update Rolling Out by Early August

Sprint has confirmed that the HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich update will roll out by early August.

The carrier, on its website, has confirmed the good news, not only to HTC EVO 3D owners, but to owners of the HTC EVO Design 4G as well.

Sprint says that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates will roll out to owners of both the EVO 3D and the EVO Design in early August though the carrier remains mum on a specific date for either roll out.

The updates will roll out OTA, Over-the-Air, and when they are available, users will be prompted to install the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software, a process that should take quite a bit of time considering the size of the update.

The EVO 3D will get ICS by early August.

The software for both devices should roll out with numerous bug fixes and enhancements although like the release date, Sprint remains silent on what exactly will be accompanying the software.

This news comes shortly after the HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich update started rolling out for owners of the GSM variant of the device. That roll out signaled that an update for the Sprint model was close, and as it turns out, it will be rolling out just over a month later.

The HTC EVO 3D was released last year as Sprint’s true successor to the popular HTC EVO 4G. While the 3D feature was seen as gimmicky, it garnered good reviews from critics and only stands to become better once Android Ice Cream Sandwich and all of its features arrive.

It was recently replaced by the HTC EVO 4G LTE which was released earlier this month for Sprint’s new 4G LTE network. The EVO 3D only runs on Sprint’s 4G WiMax network. Sprint will not be releasing any more WiMax smartphones, only those that run 4G LTE.

Boost Mobile has been shipping an Android 4.0 powered HTC Design 4G since May, though the device on carriers like Sprint and U.S. Cellular have yet to receive the new software.

Sounds good, no wait……who’s making this call, HTC? Sprint? I shudder to think the update will be more engaging than the gingerbread ota for the OG EVO 4G, which was nothing more than your basic window dressing-just good enough to say you had gingerbread.

again, sprint, your lie lie lie pattern is rediculous, just like you said that ics for 3d and design users would roll out june-july 2 months ago, now another lie is heading our way, dont try to fool us

i would like to point out that sprint said they were going for a late June/early July release, it was never confirmed that it was defiantly releasing then. this is saying it will be out by early august which could still mean up until the 14th. in other words, this is a deadline they are attempting now. i still wouldn’t hold my breath for this update until sprint actually says an exact date for it. oh and android 4.0 is ics and this is only affecting US users. the rest of the world has been able to enjoy it on the evo3d since late June.

        No, here’s what happened:
Last Fall/Winter it was confirmed that the Evo 3D was on the list to get ICS “soon”, they even went so far as to say it would happen in January. Then HTC said changed and it would be rolled out “early 2012″. Then later, they revised the list and said only a few of their phones would get it in early 2012. The rest, including the Evo 3D, were to get it ‘later in the year’. Then Sprint did, in fact, announce that they would be rolling out the ICS update in June or July. That was straight from the horse’s mouth, and it was pretty clear. Now they are saying early August.

They are now 7 months late, and I have zero confidence that Sprint will follow through. Good thing we have working ICS ROMs available, and soon-to-be working Jelly Bean ROMs… Never expect an official update from the carrier until you are actually downloading it.

I didn’t even mention the announcement where Sprint promised the update in June, before they changed it to “June or July”.

I wish I had references for all these, some were from the Sprint Facebook page, some from the Sprint web site, and some from articles posting official press releases.

Basically what it comes down to is, do NOT make promises, announcements, or release dates that you cannot keep. And when you do, inform the customers, apologize, and give realistic information rather than continuing to make false announcements and promises.

Also between the “early 2012″ and the original June date, they said it would roll out in March. Unlike all these other dates, I’m not going to get my hopes up for this early August release. Actually I’m still hoping this one is the one to prove me wrong, I’m just not expecting it.

          • Eric says

Sprint set the release for mid June. Then HTC, a week later, said they were going to hand the update over to Sprint mid June, and that Sprint should have it out by June-July. Its just a crappy situation altogether.

    • owner says

actually it was sources and hints that said june july but no one came out and said like they did this time

    • BillyBawls says

Mostly like your phone in Africa is a GSM model….which has had the update available for over a month. Stick to what you know.

      • Abdallah Es-Haq says

Yeah kinda feel like an idiot right now, it completely flew under my radar, you can imagine my excitement, anyways srry if I annoyed you

  4. Matt says

does it occur to anyone else that sprint is dragging his feet on purpose , gotta sell the 4g LTE device as long as possible before the update !

  5. Shayne says

Why does it feel like Sprint is always the last to get things? I’m thinking I should not re-sign with Sprint.

  6. Jeremiah Summers says

I’m tired of hearing the old LTE has ICS so they didn’t roll it out theory. The LTE has Sense 4.0 in which is a major advancement over Sense 3.6 that will come with the 3D. For an Evo fan you want the latest greatest Sense anyways especially one what was redone from the ground up for ICS as apposed to 3.6 that was just ported to run on ICS with very little feature changes. The LTE offers a much better experience with ICS, then the 3D will (not that it won’t be better). So that theory is CRAP. Sprint is just slow with everything, and seems to be the red headed step child for carriers, not just with this scenerio but with other devices like the Nexus S as well.

  7. John Doe says

And this is exactly why I just went ahead and rooted my EVO 3D..
Now I’m running ICS, with everything working. Also, no more Sprint
    For me.

    • One of the Higher Ups says

which rom? did u have to flash a kernel to switch your radios? rooting looks intimidating as heck……but I’m sick of waiting on updates AND 4G (LTE now, supposedly) from Sprint, and sick of Sprint’s slow-as-molasses 3G!!

  8. Evo3D-ICS says

Just downloaded ICS OTA and installing now. Check for updates; I just found it was available this morning by doing a periodic check!

  9. ArcherB says

I am installing it now. It’s out! I waited to post this until my download part was done. You may all start your updates now.
