European Carriers Begin Ordering nano-SIM Cards Ahead of iPhone 5 Launch

With Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5 flagship iOS smartphone expected to debut later this Fall around September or October, carriers and mobile operators in Europe are beginning to prepare for the launch of the highly coveted smartphone. BGR writes that in their preparation, the Financial Times is reporting that carriers have begun to order the new nano-SIM format SIM cards, which would be even smaller than the micro SIM cards used in today’s iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models.

As smartphone-makers aim at saving space on devices, one area to conserve space would be to shrink down the SIM card, which are used to identify the phone with a GSM or LTE network.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be slimmer than the iPhone 4S, but will come with a larger display and a metal body. As usual, Apple has been quiet about unannounced products.

In the U.S., it’s unclear if Sprint will be offering a removable SIM card in its iPhone models. Thus far, the carrier has launched four phones capable of LTE speeds, but unlike rival Verizon Wireless, the phones on Sprint’s models do not come with user serviceable SIM cards. Instead, Sprint’s 4G LTE phones come with embedded SIM cards, though the carrier has stated in the past that it hopes to eventually migrate to user-replaceable SIM cards. This would allow users to more easily swap phones.
