How to Take Control of Text Size in Chrome for The Nexus 7

Published

on

The Nexus 7 is quickly becoming my go to browsing tablet, which is no surprise considering how easy it is to take anywhere.

But, the smaller display means that I often need to zoom in further to make text readable. This requires the use of two hands, instead of a simple double tap with my thumb.

If the default zoom is too small, Chrome for Android allows users to set the size of text on a double tap, to allow for a perfect zoom without using two hands.

With Chrome for Android this option is built in, and includes an option to take control of web pages which normally won’t allow users to zoom.

How to Change the Size of Text in Chrome for Android

Setting up a custom text size for zooming on Chrome takes a few minutes and will work on all the sites you visit.

  1. Open up Chrome for Android.
  2. Tap on the Menu button in the upper right. It looks like three dots.
  3. Tap on Settings.
  4. Tap on Accessibility.
  5. Move the Text Scaling slider until the text in the box at the top of the page is the right size.

Set the text size for a double tap zoom in Chrome on the Nexus 7.

I find that 115% – 120% is about right for me, but the slider goes all the way up to 200% for easy readability.

The next option is to Force enable zoom. This will force websites to allow you to zoom in. I recommend turning this on as a growing trend is to lock down zooming on websites.

Once enabled, you’ll be able to zoom on any website, even those which normally lock zooming and would otherwise be un-readable.

Note that the default Android browser (at least on the Galaxy Nexus with 4.1) also includes settings under accessibility including, text scaling, double tap scaling, minimum font size, and force zoom.

Once you zoom the web page is there a way to lock it
I refresh the page on my trading account for stock prices and it reverts back to regular size. Then every time I have to zoom, refresh page zoom etc.

This feature is only half the solution. Once zoomed in the page boundaries are outside the screen and scrolling is needed to read a line. The ideal is a feature my LG999 has, reflow on zoom, where paragraphs are reflowed on zoom to fill the screen.

Of course changing the text will screw the formatting of may websites.

While this works for web pages, it does nothing to improve the readability of Chrome search results!
