Philips Fidelio SoundAvia AD7000w Review: AirPlay Speakers

Published

on

The Philips Fidelio SoundAvia AD7000w Airplay speakers offer a small and compact wireless speaker set up for the home or office.

I’ve been using the AirPlay enabled Philips Fidelio AD7000w for the past several months in my home office and throughout the house while doing some home improvement projects.

Like the Sonos PLAY:3 speakers I reviewed last year, I can plug this speaker into any outlet and start streaming music from my iPhone or iPad as long as WiFi is available.

The Philips Fidelio SoundAvia AD7000w speakers deliver a lot of volume and offer good sound quality for a small package.

The Philips Fidelio SoundAvia AD7000w offers AirPlay connectivity.

Connectivity

The connection process was straightforward and once set up I have not had to reconnect the system to my WiFi network. On several occasions I had to push the power button on the speakers to allow my iPhone to see them as an AirPlay device. This didn’t prove to be a major issue, but can be annoying if you’ve settled in to work or read a book.

The speaker system includes a 3.5mm headphone jack for connecting non AirPlay devices, but if you don’t plan to use AirPlay there are cheaper options available.

The rear of the unit provides connection options.

While connectivity is sometimes an issue with AirPlay speaker systems I have not had issues since switching to a NetGear Wireless N router, an upgrade form a very old Wireless G router.

Audio

AirPlay speakersFor a small package the Philips Fidelio SoundAvia speakers deliver an impressive range of sound. The unit sounds best when placed against a wall, but is acceptable from almost any location.

The speakers produce clear audio with a good balance of mids and highs. The speaker system also pushes enough bass and low-end to complete the sound without feeling overpowering. Too many small speakers like this deliver a bass that sounds falsely inflated, that’s not the case.

Music sounded rich and full, unlike many small speaker systems. The audio quality was better than I expect on Bluetooth audio systems.

Design

The curved shape and small footprint makes it easy to put the speakers almost anywhere. The speakers come with a small power adapter that is  easy to carry from room to room or to a friend’s if you need to supply the tunes at a get together.

The system includes a small power adapter.

I tried to use the speakers on my nightstand, where the very small speakers fit, but the bright Blue LED made sleeping anywhere near the SoundAvia impossible.

Recommendation

The Philips Fidelio SoundAvia AD7000w AirPlay speakers offer an impressive sound quality in a small size. The speakers go for $142 on Amazon and $199 direct from Apple. This is expensive compared to some wired speaker docks, but that’s the price we must pay for AirPlay connectivity.

With the integration of AirPlay in OS X Mountain Lion Apple computers will soon be able to stream audio direct to these speakers, which greatly increases the value to Apple users.

Have you had the opportunity to use it with a Mac running OSX Mountain Lion? Does it run smoothly (system sounds, movies, music, youtube…)?
