Sprint HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich Update Starts Rolling Out

Published

on

The Sprint HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich update roll out has begun.

We have received numerous tips from HTC EVO 3D owners who say that the Sprint EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich roll out has begun. Several reports also indicate the same thing so it appears that the device is amidst a massive upgrade.

Sprint had promised early August for the upgrade and it looks like it might have delivered a little earlier than expected which is always a nice touch for an Android update.

Read: Guide to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The update is currently rolling out OTA, Over-the-Air, which means that owners should be prompted to install the very large piece of software when it arrives. Once prompted, owners of the EVO 3D will download and install the update and finally get a replacement for Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The software should also come with numerous bug fixes and enhancements though we still aren’t clear on exactly what ICS might have fixed.

The HTC EVO 3D ICS update has started to roll out.

Sprint’s EVO 3D is a little late to the ICS party. The HTC EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich update started rolling out for owners of the GSM variant of the device a few weeks ago.

The update should make the EVO 3D a much better device overall though it still is overshadowed by the HTC EVO 4G LTE which came out earlier this year.

The EVO 3D only runs on Sprint’s 4G WiMax network. Sprint will not be releasing any more WiMax smartphones, only those that run 4G LTE.

We have not yet heard from the HTC EVO Design 4G ICS roll out which is also slated for early August. We assume that it’s probably not far behind though.

Those who are still in possession of the HTC EVO 3D should be on the lookout for ICS, it should arrive soon.

Anyone see the update yet and if so, how’s it treating you?

Do a factory reset on your phone. setting>storage>factory data reset.
It’s recommended to a factory reset after an OS update

Same thing happened to me. I think it was a memory issue. I backed up and then deleted all my text messages using SMS backup & restore app and now I have no problems.

I am having the same issue with the text messages. Also lost my icons from the lock screen. NEVER had a single problem with this phone until now so I’m annoyed. Anyone have any tips.

        08/09/2012 at 1:27 am

Doing a Factory Reset will clear up the bugs and glitches you are having. You won’t lose your pictures, music or files that are on your sd card. Only the files saved on the phone’s internal memory will be lost, mainly apps and messages. If you don’t want to lose your messages, you can download the SMS Backup and restore app from the Play Store and do a backup.

        08/04/2012 at 7:02 am

on your evo 3d, go to settings, system updates, then htc software update and click “check now” from there you just follow the procedure, make sure your phone is not rooted or it wont let you update to 4.0

    07/31/2012 at 12:12 pm

Thanx but after 45 mins, the “please wait” downloading bar disappeared and my text msgs are now accessible thru the text icon once again…my advice to all with issues….be patient…more so than I was…the more storage used up the longer and slower the update appears to finalize.

      08/09/2012 at 7:26 pm

Having the same issues with my text messaging. Go to the messaging screen and it says “Please wait…” Been “please waiting” for six hours, no exaggeration. I tried the back-up and delete thing with the app and it has given me no luck. Same with the factory restore or whatever. Any -other- ideas?

    08/01/2012 at 6:41 am

Updated mine last night. As said earlier, be patient! I updated mine over wifi and it took quite a while download and install, if you using 3G I imagine it will be a lot longer. Even if you think it is done, wait. It’s well worth it! My phone uses a lot less memory and runs much quicker and smoother. The only thing I found a problem with initially was that it was not seeing my pictures anymore on my sd card in the gallery so I went to settings and storage and chose the option to clean up the card and it saw everything there. Went back to gallery and they were all there again so I think it just needed a kick start. I also rebooted my phone after all was said and done which seemed to help.

Received my ICS for my evo3d but I went to my updates and started it. After patience and letting it figure itself out , everything is smooth. Running great. I’m happy! OH, and I’m in Baltimore, MD

    08/01/2012 at 1:38 pm

I lost all of my pictures after updating. It did not tell me that I needed to back them up. Is there any way to get them back?

    • jexxi

      08/01/2012 at 4:17 pm

If you’re looking in your gallery and can’t find them, try resettin your phone. Also try downloading an app like ES file explorer and look on your sd card manually. They should still be there. After I updated mine my gallery was showing nothing at all but es explorer was showing my pics. I restarted my phone and then everything was fine.

Anyone in phoenix get an update so far???

    • jexxi

      08/02/2012 at 11:09 am

TO ANYONE WHO HAS NOT RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION TO INITIATE ICE CREAM SANDWICH ON THEIR EVO 3D: I didn’t receive a notification…I started it myself using the manual updating. There’s usually 4 things you can try to manually update, firmware, profile, prn, HTC, I found my update in the HTC software update cheker…to find yours: go into menu/appdrawer>settings>system updates>HTC software update>check now

It SHOULD show you that there’s an update available. Plug in your charger and be patient. It took mine about 45 min to work itself out and then after that I restarted it and everything was smooth!

Good luck to everyone, we finally got our Ics! Celebrations are in order!

    08/02/2012 at 10:55 am

I updated my phone a few nights ago and I love to the new layout and its much faster then before. The only thing I don’t like about the update is that it don’t have the power save option like the last system did and I don’t like any of the power save apps in the market. This new system is much better then any system I’ve had including iPhone. The best thing I have to say is the security, I can use my face to unlock my phone now, that has to be the coolest thing I have seen!

    • jexxi

      08/02/2012 at 11:14 am

Most definitely! The first thing I did was set up the face recognition unlocker! I like that the normal unlocker comes up if unable to recognize you, in, say, the dark, or other conditions where you can’t get a good face shot. I’m also beyond stoked at how loud poweramp is now! I like my music loud and now it is! Definitely not disappointed!

    08/03/2012 at 12:22 pm

I updated 20 minutes ago in Indiana. Took a total of 25 minutes. Then came all of the app updates. Phone ran slow for a bit while all of this was going on. Same issue with the text messages as others, but after a few minutes all was good. The only issue I have found so far was the power seemed to drain quicker than it used to. Other than that, sweet update! Super smooth operation!

    08/04/2012 at 3:01 pm

I would not recommend updatingyour phones. It totally ruined the phone. It made the slow. very slow. It took and killed more than half the life expectancy on the battery. I never during the day had to recharge my phone, now it seems I have to recharge it 3 to 4 times a day. IM not using the phone any then i did yesterday. My wife had the identical phone without the update and side by side her Batt is 3x longer lasting. Prior to this update my phone ran flawless.

  28. paul

    08/04/2012 at 3:29 pm

They also ruined voice to text as you can see in my last post, another thing that was flawless on the phone. It is 6:20on I charged the phone already 4 times today. My widest still has 54% since getting out off bed this morning. The phone section, everyone I go to make a phone call I get myself the very first call I make. Like I was saying. I don’t do or have anything different in my phone that i already have and use. The settings are all the same. I’m sorry I clicked on update, they made it to where I don’t even want the phone now. Crooks. And they talk about Ms? Atleast if it was a Ms update it would have fixed it. But then again. There was nothing to fix because the phone ran flawless.

I updated my phone at 3:00 a.m. and now, several hours later, it won’t even start! All it does it keeps rebooting. I called HTC and they had me do a factory reset and it still didn’t work. I was advised to send the phone in so HTC can take up to 10 days to fix and repair the phone!!! I can’t believe I chose to update my phone: I know not to believe the hype!

    08/07/2012 at 6:22 am

After updating my evo design to ICS over the weekend the first thing I tried was the facial recognition unlock screen….only to find my front facing camera is disabled..on top of that! the lag is ridiculous…my texting BARELY works…and I’ve been waiting for this damn update for 3 or more months!! Lol but yeah..I wish I could downgrade my phone..I may just end up rooting it now and installing cyanogen mod

    • Rene

      08/09/2012 at 1:39 am

That’s what I did. I am running cyanogenmod 9 on my 3D right now. FAR clearer and faster (and visually appealing imo) than Sense 3.6. There are a few good ROMs for this phone right now. I recommend Rooting. Much more freedom.

So I update my HTC EVO 3D yesterday and so far I like it. But the thing I’m upset about is when my phone was done all my pictures videos where gone so back your stuff up before you update.

    • Rene

      08/09/2012 at 1:46 am

As +jexxie was saying above, download the app ES file explorer and look through the sd card manually. The pictures and video should still be there. Restating your phone should make them show.

        08/09/2012 at 2:44 am

My issue is Web View it is awful, and laggy slow just has a lot of glitches even on WiFi…… Anyone else having this issue?? How to I get 2.3 back, I reset phone and nope that wasn’t the answer. My cell is recently from assurion. I have contacted them due to it may not be ics but who knows….

        • Rene

          08/09/2012 at 3:13 am

A couple of things you can try, like jexxie said, is waiting and letting the phone update all the files. Wait a couple of hours then reset your phone. Let the new OS catch up. If that doesn’t work, do a factory reset. That will clear up all the bugs. Unfortunately, you will lose you apps data and messages. If you want to downgrade back to 2.3,you would have to root your phone. I wouldn’t recommend going back to 2.3 though. Good luck

  36. Sarah

    08/07/2012 at 12:20 pm

If you are seeing the “Please wait” when opening the text messages…. It is just trying to load all of the messages previously loaded on the phone. If you have alot, obviously it will take longer. Mine only took 15 minutes. If you cleared out the memory, that would make it load the fastest, but if you have time to wait, it WILL load all of them. But the new update has been wonderful! Totally love it!

  37. jexxi

    08/07/2012 at 12:47 pm

Everyone who has yet to dowmload the new Ics update: save yourself the stress of thinking your whole phone is ruined and be patient…even if the whole update is done in 15 minutes, it wont really be actually finished updating everything else, INCLUDING your messages, pics, music, etc for sometimes over an hour…best suggestion is to find something to keep you busy for an hour or so, come back, restart it and then play with your new phone…save yourself the worry. Your pics and msgs are there, they just need time ;)
