Wait for HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update Continues

Published

on

The wait for the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update continues, even as we march further into the month of August.

HTC promised the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update for sometime during the months of July and August though it did not specifically say when the update would roll out. And thus far, neither HTC nor Verizon has given any sort of indication as to when the update might arrive for owners.

If it ever does.

The wait for the ThunderBolt ICS update continues.

We’ve, again, heard that there are slim odds of the update ever reaching the device’s of those who own Verizon’s HTC ThunderBolt. A source told us that there is a 95% chance that the update will never roll out and thus far, HTC and Verizon have nothing to dispel those rumors.

Read: 5 Thoughts on the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update.

That silence, along with the fact that HTC cancelled the HTC Desire Ice Cream Sandwich update have not helped matters as we get further into the month of August.

Further complicating things is the fact that we have yet to see a substantial leak of any kind, something that has happened numerous times for other devices.

Both HTC and Verizon have a couple of weeks left before they will have failed to deliver on their promise. It could be that the companies wait until the end of the month or even after the deadline arrives if the HTC Rezound ICS update is any indication.

The HTC Rezound Ice Cream Sandwich update was promised for June or July but HTC and Verizon didn’t end up rolling it out until early August.

It’s possible that we could see the same thing from the HTC ThunderBolt update.

Hopefully, HTC and Verizon decide to inform owners of a decision about whether or not they’re going to continue on the ThunderBolt’s upgrade path (we think they will considering how many TBolt owners there are out there) and when they do, offer a more specific release window.

Anyone thinking that HTC will miss the August roll out window for the HTC ThunderBolt update?

I like to stay optimistic and say that ICS will be coming soon. But I realize I will probably be let down.

I think they’ll wait until the last minute to do it. I wouldn’t see why not.

I’m sure it’ll be done at the end of August.

The easiest way to find out would be for someone to do a partition check on the thunderbolt vs the desire HD. if they are partitioned similarly, the odds are high we wont get ICS, because the Desire HD and the thunderbolt have almost identical specs. If the partitions dont match up, then we may still have a chance. Even if they do end up giving us the update, it’ll more then likely be last minute, like the Rezound.

Guys, why do we keep speculating about this? CLEARYL it is not coming. We’re talking abotu Verizon here who have the no questions asked, worst track record with updating phones. And also, this is the HTC thunderbolt, the crap of a phone that propelled HTC into fame and a year later, infamy. So yes, we as customers are all upset at HTC for making such a shitty phoen and Verizon for being the scum that they are, but at the end of the day, HTC has paid the price and no one buys their phones anymore, and we are just going to have to suck it up until our upgrade cycles come, which will be the case for me in 3 months.

Thunderbolt actually isn’t a bad first Gen lie phone. Ive had the revolution and charge and must say other than needing a extended battery thunderbolt is the best. Also the only of the three where the manufacturer is attempting ics. if you are comparing to s4 dual core phones than duh can’t compete.

Let’s not forget the htc desire hd build- in storage is 1.5 gb while htc thunderbolt build-in storage is 8gb. I think there is a confusion here.

I don’t understand why this phone wouldn’t get the ICS update, because it was the first 4G phone by Verizon. It got a lot of recognition for its speed, and it’s user friendly interface. Yes, the battery life has been horrendous, but you can buy the HTC Rezound battery for the Thunderbolt and it GREATLY improved it.
However, this Gingerbread software it currently is running off of is not the best. At times, the phone will force close some of its apps. Freeze or slow down while you’re entering in a text.
It could improve the options to extend battery life instead relying on the Google App Store for Juicedefender.
Plus, at times, the phone will randomly reboot itself.
Over all, I really like my phone and I am eligible for an upgrade. But, this phone can basically perform what these other smart phones have and more. Just buy a Rezound battery and it will help.

Unfortunately I cannot relate to all the sour Thunderbolt owners because I got mine for Christmas 2011. By that time all the bugs that made the debut a disaster had been ironed out and Gingerbread was already on it. It has been a superb phone for me, solid feel and build quality unlike some of these new phones that I pick up and feel like I could snap them in half, or my cousin’s iPhones that have all shattered at some point (yes she’s pretty negligent with her phones but c’mon, the bloody thing SHATTERS). Operationally it is smooth, the 4G is close to wifi speed, and I still feel the straightforward utilitarian design is quite nice. Many times I have thought bout getting a newer phone and realized it would be purely out of vanity, as the Thunderbolt is already overkill for my needs. And as for the battery, I too invested $20 in a Rezound one and now get pretty close to 48 hours life with my nominal usage.

Now that I’ve given my 2 cents here’s the important part of my comment. Just got off the phone with HTC, and they told me the gradual ICS rollout for the Thunderbolt started last Thursday. I asked if he was sure that wasn’t just the Rezound he kept on assuring me that the Thunderbolt is all done with testing and all owners should get ICS soon. Call them yourselves if you don’t believe me, 1-866-449-8358.

Even though I’d like to pronounce this official news since it came form HTC themselves, I let Adam know about it and he really feels HTC is confused. So we’ll have to see what HTC tells him…

This aligns with what the rep who spoke to me said (last Thursday was August 2nd). Are you seeing this Adam?

I actually went back and watched some of the ThunderBolt commercials just for kicks. It’s ironic one of them involved the phone having to be struck by lightning to activate. Cue the battery life jokes, LOL

Watching those commercials is just another reminder of how stupidly fast technology moves these days. In the phone world, if it’s 6 months old, it’s old news. The ThunderBolt is 1 and half years old now and stone age compared to some of this new stuff. It’s part of the reason I really look forward to this update; will it breathe new life into the phone or just cause more problems? :P

Hello IPhone and I hate Apple and AT&.T but if U continue to let these companies jerk U around and still give them your businesse then U deserve to be screwed

On HTC USA’s Facebook page, they responded to my query saying, “We’re working on it, and planning to release it before the end of the month”… So, take that for what it’s worth.
I expect, like the Rezound, we’ll see it by the first few days of September… unless there’s a last-minute cancellation like the Desire HD… o_O

Done with HTC. After my 4th blunderbolt replacement, I pitched a fit in the Verizon store (quite out of character) and got
an early upgrade to a galaxy s3.

Adam, STOP WITH YOUR OPINION!!! Who is your “source” anyways? I received a call from Verizon Customer Service after multiple phone calls and chats that I rated poorly. After talking with Debra from VZW, I found out that Verizon doesn’t yet have the firmware. HTC is still screwing around with it. We got on a conference call with them and got the same roundabout answer about how HTC does put out release dates because of the nature of software development. If we need to be angry at anyone, it needs to be HTC. If it were my company, you set a release date, if any hiccups come up, you release an announcement updating/explaining to customers why the date had to be moved. HTC has some of the worst customer service I’ve ever seen. So guys, let’s lay off of Verizon. Once they get the ROM, we should see it within two weeks after that point. I’ve actually got this VZW representative calling me every 3 to 5 days to check up with me/update me as to where we are in the process. It’s not Verizon’s fault they haven’t said anything, they simply don’t know anything, just like the rest of us.

      @Andrew:

Dude, if you dont wanna read his opinion, go the hell away amd dont read his blog on gottabemobile. It *is* really just that easy, man…

Besides, based on your claims of having your own VZW concierge customer service rep, the only thing it would appear anyone cam say is this: we’re all being told different things by HTC and VZW… none of which inspires a lot of confidence in either.

I called HTC again today to make sure they would be consistent with the news they gave me yesterday but unfortunately the rep I got this time did not know anything about a rollout last Thursday. She only said it was still planned to be done before the end of August, which aligns more with the Facebook query mentioned above. This was rather disappointing and I was definitely miffed the info I got yesterday turned out to be false. However, I guess we also have to remember they are still well within the window they proposed for the update (July or August). Not grabbing my torch and pitchfork yet, but if September 1 comes around and no update……..

@ Nick. I think you should call them one more time ! (Three strike ). Maybe the person you spoke to wasn’t allowed to talk about the issue. I would just wait until August 31st, 11:59pm, and If you don’t get it then, follow your next step or plan. It’s just a suggestion.

    08/07/2012 at 8:07 pm

I emailed HTC about the issue and this is what they replied… I understand you are wanting to know if the HTC Thunderbolt is going to get the Android 4.0. update. I will be more than happy to further assist you. HTC does not announce dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. At any point in the software development cycle a situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework, to complete rewrites of the software base. Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software. The normal time period between the final acceptance testing and release of software is about a week and often shorter than that. Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC. I hope you are having a great day! If you ever have any other questions or concerns in the future, always feel free to contact us via e-mail or phone. Our phone support department can be reached at 1-866-449-8358 between the hours of 6 A.M. and 1 A.M. EST, seven days a week.

Yep, that’s basically the shpeal they’ve switched back to today. I am really curious as to what possessed the reps yesterday to actually tell us the update has started rolling out on the 2nd…..
