Motorola Droid RAZR HD Might Be Dead in the Water

Earlier today, I relayed my thoughts on the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD rumor, and now, it’s time to elaborate on the other Droid RAZR HD device that is rumored to be launching in October, the Motorola Droid RAZR HD itself.

For those just catching up, here is the rumor. Motorola and Verizon are apparently going to be launching both a Droid RAZR HD and a Droid RAZR MAXX HD in October.

Read: 5 Thoughts on the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

Specs of the Droid RAZR MAXX HD are not yet known but if the name is any indication, the phone will likely possess a battery that is bigger than the 2,530 mAh battery that’s found in the Droid RAZR HD. It’s possible that Motorola could put the same 3,300 mAh battery found inside the Droid RAZR MAXX inside the Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

That would mean that it would not only have 21 hours of continuous talk time as one of its main features, it would also have a high-definition display, 4G LTE data speeds, and a solid design that, based on the past, will likely be thin in nature.

The Droid RAZR MAXX HD sounds like a fantastic phone. But what about the original. Where does the Motorola Droid RAZR HD, the device that was originally rumored, fit in if the Droid RAZR MAXX HD is the real deal?

Maybe nowhere and here’s why.

Launching two Droid RAZR HD phones would be ridiculous.

The original Motorola Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR MAXX are both capable smartphones. However, it’s clear that the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX is not only the more desirable phone but the better selling phone. Its price has not dropped at retailers like Amazon and it still sits at $299.99 on-contract at Verizon.

The Droid RAZR, the original, has seen its price discounted.

Verizon’s Droid RAZR MAXX has also continuously sat in the top 5 best selling smartphones at Amazon Wireless. It has taken a fire sale to propel the Droid RAZR up to the number one ranking.

So what’s clear is that people want a bigger battery in their smartphone more than they want thinness. Remember, the big draw of the Droid RAZR is its 7.1mm frame.

My point is, I don’t see how Motorola is going to sell the Droid RAZR HD if it launches it at the same time as the Droid RAZR MAXX HD. Thinness alone likely won’t save it.

If the Droid RAZR HD is already competing against a similar phone but is also doing battle with the iPhone 5 – which is rumored for September – and the prospects of a new Nexus, I can see no way that this phone performs well.

Not unless Verizon decides to make it available for cheap, say $99.99 on-contract. And even then, I’d think people would opt for the Droid RAZR MAXX HD or the iPhone 5 with 4G LTE and a bigger screen over it.

There won’t be much room for the device come October to begin with – the iPhone 5 and Nexus will see to that and tossing in a competitor like the Droid RAZR MAXX HD would all but kill it on arrival.

It seems a bit silly to me but then again, Motorola and Verizon have done some ridiculous things together in the past.

Would a slimmer form factor and cheaper price cause you to buy the Droid RAZR HD over the Droid RAZR MAXX HD?

You know what nobody ever notices? The fractions of a millimeter in difference between most phones today.

You know what EVERYONE notices?? When they can’t use their phone because the battery is dead halfway through the day.

Battery trumps thinness every time, and it’s not worth saving a few bucks for a phone you can only use for half the day.

I would predict just one model releasing. Really, 2500mah versus 3300mah, if the second model in question has the Maxx battery. A 4000mah, however, would be awesome, and probably not going to happen.
We haven’t seen any leaked benchmarks, or multiple devices floating around. So someone, somewhere, is yanking someone’s chain.

Should be dead in water cuz moto or big red or both can’t release devices in a competitive manner, they were lucky with the razr og but this time around quad cores will be all the rage this fall and this Razr HD will be too little too late for moto, they should just pack it in for 2012 and aim toward a realistic goal like 2013 and get it right next time or just throw the towel in already.
