Apple Seeks Ban on 8 Samsung Phones in the U.S.

Following the jury verdict on Friday today Apple announced which Samsung phones it wants to ban in the U.S. market.

According to The Verge, Apple is asking the court to ban a total of eight Samsung devices.

The number is just a small selection of the dozens of phones included in the lawsuit, but unlike most other phones involved in the case, these phones are all still available from carriers.

The eight phones are:

  • Galaxy S 4G
  • Galaxy S2 (AT&T)
  • Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket)
  • Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile)
  • Galaxy S2 Epic 4G
  • Galaxy S Showcase
  • Droid Charge
  • Galaxy Prevail

Each of the included phones is somehow related to the Galaxy S II. Many of the phones involved are simply re-skins of the Samsung Galaxy S II, while others like the Droid Charge are slightly modified versions of the phone.

The reasons for banning each phone varies by model. Only the Galaxy S 4G was found to violate all three utility patents, both design patents, and both trade dress claims involved in the case. The Galaxy S II Skyrocket and Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch only violate one design patent, but every other phone Apple wants to ban was found to violate at least two patents.

Whether Apple gets the phones banned or not likely won’t affect the release of the Galaxy S II on Boost Mobile or any other pre-paid carrier.

None of the phones included still sell for their original asking price, and many are now free on contract. The Droid Charge, for example, is now free on contract and is the phone features on Verizon’s website as of this writing.

A court date to discuss injunction issues like these is scheduled for September 20. If Apple does get the bans through, the biggest losers will be consumers looking to buy cheaper older Android smartphones.

More recent Samsung phones like the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Nexus are still on sale. Those phones won’t show up in court for a while.
