ATIV S May Be Samsung’s First Windows Phone 8 Device

When Microsoft first announced Windows Phone 8, it announced Samsung as one of the manufacturers for the launch of the new OS, and now we have a hint of the company’s upcoming flagship Windows Phone 8 device.

According to The Verge, the flagship Windows Phone 8 device from Samsung is the Samsung ATIV S.

The ATIV S is a 4.8-inch smartphone that reminds us of the Galaxy S III on the front. The back of the phone looks quite different from the Galaxy S III, but the overall design similarities are impossible to ignore.

The 4.8-inch AMOLED screen will have the same 720p resolution as the Galaxy S III. The phone reportedly uses a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The rear-facing camera is 8MP, while the front-facing camera is 1.9MP. We hope the cameras are the same as the ones in the Galaxy S III and not cheaper, poorer quality cameras.

Samsung will likely be one of the first manufacturers to announce its Windows Phone 8 phones. If the company announced the phone today it will be the first. Nokia will announce its first Windows Phone 8 phones next week in New York City. We haven’t heard of any other Windows Phones on tap at IFA 2012.

If Samsung does announce the ATIV S at IFA the announcement will likely come today during the company’s Unpacked event. We know Samsung will “unpack” the Galaxy Note 2 at the event, but a new flagship Windows Phone 8 device would be a nice surprise for the event. The phone might get overshadowed by the giant Galaxy Note 2 running Jelly Bean.
