iPhone 5 Rumors Accurate: 4-Inch Display, Metal Back, New Dock Connector

A new report claims that recent iPhone 5 leaks of specifications and parts have been accurate and that the iPhone 5 will indeed have a 4-inch display with 16:9 aspect ratio, a metal back, a new dock connector, and a new position for the device’s 3.5mm headphone jack.

According to iMore, which has been reliable in the past, Apple will announce the new iPhone 5 on September 12th and it will indeed be coming with many of the features that have been rumored over the past several weeks.

The specifications that it confirms are the device’s larger 4-inch screen, which would make it the first iPhone without a 3.5-inch display, to go along with its new 16:9 aspect ratio. A 16:9 aspect ratio would allow for widescreen content.

It appears that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display.

Apple will apparently add a metal plate across the back of the iPhone 5, replacing the glass that was found with the designs of the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

It’ll also have a smaller dock connector, again, something that has been rumored for quite sometime. Unfortunately, the size of the dock connector is still not confirmed and 19-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin are all in the mix as possibilities.

It also appears that Apple will be relocating the headphone jack on the iPhone 5 to the bottom of the device. The previous iPhone models had the headphone jack located on the top of the handset.

Unfortunately, there is nothing about 4G LTE data speeds, a new HD front-facing camera, or its processor. However, it appears that the design of the iPhone 5 may have just been confirmed ahead of launch.

We, of course, won’t know for sure until Apple announces the device on September 12th.

Last year, Apple was able to keep the iPhone 4S under wraps until its launch in October and it could be that Apple has managed to do the same thing with the iPhone 5.

However, this time around, the rumors have centered around similar specifications and a similar design so it’s looking like the taller, 4-inch iPhone 5 is likely what we’ll see announced next week.

iPhone 5 Release Date

While Apple has confirmed the September 12th iPhone 5 event, we still don’t know when the company plans on releasing it.

Rumor has it, September 21st is the day and while nothing is set in stone, Apple does like to release its devices shortly after announcing them and September 21st is, as of right now, as good of a day as any.

We expect AT&T, Sprint and Verizon to carry the phone at launch.

If they are keeping the screen the same size (width) then it is finally time for me to look at Google Nexus or Samsung Galaxy 3. Not sure how they can watch other companies start selling masses of larger phones and not get it.

It doesn’t have to be huge, but it needs to be bigger (not taller, but bigger) than the current form factor. Using the iPhone vertically, which is how it is typically used, is an exercise in frustration most of the time as we try to get more and more information on screen all the time!
