5 Droid RAZR HD & RAZR MAXX HD Features You’ll Actually Care About

Earlier today, Motorola and Verizon unveiled their next two high-end Droid RAZR smartphones, the Droid RAZR HD and the Droid RAZR MAXX HD, the latter of which was a bit of a surprise. The devices will replace the earlier versions of both devices, the Droid RAZR which launched in 2011 and the Droid RAZR MAXX which arrived in February of this year.

At the event, Motorola went over all the specifications coming aboard both the Droid RAZR HD and the Droid RAZR MAXX HD when they arrive later this year. Both are stark improvements over the originals.

The device’s will both feature dual-core processors, 8MP rear facing cameras, front-facing cameras, and 1GB of RAM. They’ll also have Gorilla Glass displays and Kevlar backs to keep them well protected from clumsy incidents and the elements.

Those are nice features to be sure but those aren’t what we think should be considered the best features of the new Droid RAZRs, the ones that prospective owners will truly care about.

Here are the five features found on the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD that we think consumers will care about most.

Verizon 4G LTE

The Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD will be coming with 4G LTE data speeds, something that is now the norm when it comes to high-end Android smartphones. However, they will be coming with support for the largest 4G LTE network in the land, Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

Verizon’s 4G LTE network dwarfs the 4G LTE networks of rivals AT&T and Sprint and that means that those who are under its umbrella will be able to get 4G LTE data speeds, which can reach up to 10x faster than 3G data, in more than 300 markets spread across the United States.

From metropolitan areas to rural, Verizon’s 4G LTE network is massive and covers 75% of the U.S. population with even more markets coming later this year.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Motorola says that both phones will be launching with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but it does promise to upgrade the devices to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of the year which means owners should only be on Android 4.0 for a short while. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Motorola and Verizon release the phones Jelly Bean on board as a surprise.

While Ice Cream Sandwich is a good OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is an even better one, improving over Android 4.1 in a number of areas.

The biggest maybe is the user interface itself. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings a faster and smoother experience along with it.

Jelly Bean also brings a number of new and improved features including Google Now, offline Voice dictation, an improved Gmail application, new camera settings, more Face Unlock functionality, and a lot more.

HD Display

The original Droid RAZR devices did not sport HD displays. Motorola though has included HD quality displays on the Droid RAZR MAXX HD and Droid RAZR HD which shore up that issue and bring both devices up to speed with the rest of the Android pack.

At 4.7-inches, the displays on both phones should be more than good enough for watching movies, television shows and other media content. They’ll also be fantastic for browsing the web.

We found the displays to be vast improvements over the old ones and Motorola says that that’s because they have 78% more pixels.

Slim Form Factor

One of the features that Motorola touted on stage in New York today, and rightfully so, was the slimness of the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD’s designs.

Both of them check in with extremely thin form factors with the Droid RAZR HD measuring in at 8.4mm thick and the Droid RAZR MAXX HD coming in at 9.4mm.

After spending some time with the devices, we also determined that they are fairly lightweight as well.

What this means is that they will fit comfortably in your pocket and they’ll be extremely easy to hold, even for people with smaller hands. Remember, both boast displays that measure 4.7-inches so their footprint is fairly large. The slimness helps to negate that a bit.

Battery Life

The battery life of these two phones might just be the feature that consumers will care about the most.

While the Droid RAZR HD has a 2,500 mAh battery capable of pulling down 40% more battery life than the original Droid RAZR, the Droid RAZR MAXX HD takes it a step further, offering a massive 3,300 mAh battery that Motorola says can offer 32 hours of normal use.

The company also says that the battery life on the Droid RAZR MAXX HD offers users 21 hours of continuous talk time and 8 hours of browsing the web on 4G LTE.

This is best-in-class battery life, at least at the moment, and that’s a big reason these are such appealing phones.
