Motorola Offers $100 Upgrade Credit Instead of Jelly Bean Updates

Google and Motorola took the stage today to announce the Droid RAZR family of devices, including the RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX MAXX HD, and Motorola also talked about the Jelly Bean upgrade process.

Google and Motorola stated that they are committed to the Jelly Bean update process, but some devices won’t see the update because it would degrade the performance of the devices.

For these devices that Motorola can’t upgrade to Jelly Bean, the company will offer a $100 upgrade credit to help users get on a new device.

Motorola did not identify which devices won’t get a Jelly Bean update or when the cutoff will be. Motorola is currently trying to get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out the door to many devices, so we hope they offer the credit to those owners.

These devices may include the following Motorola smartphones. We’ve reached out to Motorola for details.

  • Atrix 2
  • Atrix 4G
  • Droid Bionic
  • Droid 4
  • Electrify

All of these devices are still pending an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, which isn’t promising news for a swift update to Jelly Bean.

The DroiD RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx already have Ice Cream Sandwich, but don’t have any news on a Jelly Bean update, so they could possibly be part of this plan. Owners may take hope in the promise of Jelly Bean Updates for the new Droid RAZR family by the end of 2012.

    I’m a Droid Bionic owner for the past year and don’t care a lot about ICS except if it were a fix for this brick of a phone. My Bionic has been useful as a voice device and a wifi “terminal” but not much else. I drop data daily, lose connection on a regular basis and can’t even get a reliable satellite signal for GPS when my wife’s same brand Droid 4 connects immediately and stays connected. Talk about frustrating? We took a trip to Florida a earlier this summer and my wife’s phone was flawless where mine was useless! I can’t stand this phone yet my contract doesn’t leave me with options short of spending a ton of $ for an off cycle upgrade. Plus the fact that Verizon and/or Moto continue to feed us information that our fix is coming. If only that were true! A year is a long time for a consumer of a retail product to await a fix for it. In most other worlds, a recall would have been issued for this lemon of a product and actions taken to satisfy the customer. How we became the bastard children is beyond my comprehension, having worked in the corporate world my whole career. How a company can ignore a large user group with issues defies explanation!

      I am with you I also own the bionic and it also drops signal from one second to the next and it is very frustrating. I took it to the verizon store and said the problem would be fixed with a sim card change but yet again the problem still remains. Verizon should do something about this we are paying for 4G network and yet we cant use it all the time with out it dropping signal.

      VZW Let me trade my Bionic “even-up” for a RazrMaxx, because of the “issues” with my Bionic…
      I got the MAXX because of my extended battery. They also replaced my 2 car docks & belt clip…

      I have the exact same issues you describe with this POS device. I suppose we shouldn’t bee too surprised that the new red headed stepchild of the Motorola brand is so problematic. They superseded it less than a month after it’s launch with the DROID Razor and Verizon stopped even listing it as an available phone back in May.

      My theory is Motorola wanted their Razor launch to go well so they made this thing just a little bit crappier than their usual offerings so the normally jinxed Razor line would come off smelling like a rose.

    I had this same issue were I was told I need a new Sim however this never worked. However one item did work, I made sure to download the most current software update and since my Bionic had been ok. Just trying to help you Guys, well anyway I hope Moto and Verizon gets there act together and soon for us Bionic holders because I to feel as if we were all sold a piece of equipment which was very quickly thrown to the back burner. Every time I have ever contacted Motorola for anything they have never helped me, all they would do is feed me script and tell me they would have to do more research just to never call me back. IM not going to trash the Bionic Device because it has been alright to me however coming out of the original Droid which never gave me any headache and then transferring in to this buggy device it makes you scratch your head on how could they (Motorola ) do this to so many folks, I do deal with battery pulls everyday and freezes? ??? Oh and they told me that because on average that I use my phone 8000+ minutes a month that the freezes would be normal …. HA Im not amused I did this for over two years with Droid og never this??? Frustrated is all I can say

    I have the same issues, and have been waiting for ICS to hopefully fix them. Sadly this experience with the Bionic maybe the last straw and push me to an iPhone. $100 credit or not.

    As someone who is running one of the ICS leaks on my phone, it’s working beautifully! I haven’t had any issues with my 4g data dropping like it was before. It’s def worth waiting for them to make sure they have it right, even though it’s been frustrating.

    This forum is like a broken record but it’s true! I am also a Bionic owner and it also drops 4G every where I go. It’s so frustrating and I thought it was jst my crappy phone. It a shame to heat so many people having the same issue doesn’t make me feel any better. We shouldn’t be going through this crap we pay too much for service and phones and we can’t even get taken care of as customers. Give me the $100 rebate and I well go to Apple and become a life long customer

    I too am disgusted with Verizon/Motorola, I waited long for the release of the Bionic and look what happened they released the Razr right after and forgot about the Bionic, the hype they built up the bionic with never net the expectations, I too have all the same issues described above. Come on Motorola get on the stick my wife was led to a Samsung that operates without flaws while mine is a piece of &^%*&^.

    My Bionic drops 3G connections constantly, and very rarely do I ever even see 4g. Its my 2nd phone, and 2nd sim card, nothing has helped at all. Motorola support is completely useless. They could give me a $500 credit and I would flush it down the toilet, where this phone belongs. Sucks that I am stuck with this trash for another year. Never again will buy Moto, and more than likely done with Android as well, seeing as how Moto is owned by Google now, so we are getting double screwed.

    My Bionic has always worked well for me. I’m not in a 4G area but those times that I have traveled to 4G areas I’ve not had the issue folks are describing here. It has been a reliable device for me and I’m looking forward to the ICS update. Next year I’ll use the $100 credit towards either another Moto phone or perhaps a Samsung.

    I just recieved my 3rd Bionic in less than a year now… I’ve had it for 3 hours as of typing this… and I’ve counted atleast 7 times so far that it has dropped data, asking me to log back into my Google acct. Right now…. Motorola should issue us a 100.00 credit for keeping the piece of crap…. lets face it, we’ve seen the Razor, Razor Maxx, Droid 4, Razor Maxx M…. All rocking ICS… and still nothing for Bionic. Pssstttt….. Hey, Yea you hello moto…. Keep your crap, Headed to the new Galaxy.

      I’ve had my Bionic since February of this year, it was a factory refurb, and other than occasional data drops, I really don’t have many issues with this phone

    Wow. I read about the Bionic when it was
    just a rumor. I went to verizon on launch day, and decided not to buy it. Back in march, my og droid incredible died, so i picked up a bionic on craigslist for $150. My bionic is the second run (16 gb internal memory vs 8) i have flaky data when im indoors or almost out of reception. I should mention, though, i am
    always rooted. .902 had shottier, but decent for my area data that was far better than my droid inc. On .902, i ran droid theory’s kinetx rom. His custom throttle values fixed many issues i had. On .905, i ran eclipse rom 3.0 which also ran better than stock. Now im on ics leak
    .232. While there may be some issues with data in areas with minimum coverage, its nothing airplane mode doesnt fix. If moto is giving a credit, i would decline because we have yet to see a google/motorola phone. The razr design has its problems, and i am sure the next generation after this will be epic.
    if you want a simple easy to use, no skills or knowledge required phone, maybe iphone is for you. I enjoy different user interfaces and hacking in general. The bionic is my 4th android phone and by far is the best for all of you who have problems, call verizon tech support until they offer you a trade. Many people have and you can too. Get a g nex, rezound, or razr/razr maxx. Hell, get an iphone. You will realize the bionic is better than you give it credit for. Im waiting on the phone
    that comes after the intel medfield. Or the first phone to have a Texas Instruments Omap 5 processor. Maybe ill take the $100 credit then.

    Same problem here – 4g drops constantly, though I’m a block away from a Verizon store, and no tall buildings, or anything, around to obstruct the signal. SIM card has been changed, but still the same problem… Plus the phone reboots itself at random. About a year until the end of the contract, so I’ll have to try the ICS in the mean time…

    From the looks of it I was sold the only fully functioning bionic. I opted for the extended battery but other than that I’m not on ICS like everyone else. I never have problems with data dropping and GPS works flawlessly too. Would I like an upgrade to ICS? Sure, who wouldn’t but I’m not about to throw my phone at the wall over it. Might as well drop all ICS focus and get started on Jelly Bean in my opinion. But either way I got the phone for free a week before the Razr came out so I can’t complain. It was a steal for me.

    My Bionic drops the radios 3G, 4G, GPS randomly. Rebooting cures the problem for another day. ALLOW US TO TRADE IN DEFECTIVE BIONICS!

    I have a DROID RAZR and the ICS ruined it ! Adobe Flash isn’t compatible with ICS and … AND.. it won’t work on Jelly Bean so you will not want to get a phone with that OS. So freakin mad at Verizon, Motorola and Google. The whole reason I bought the phone has been comprimised. You would think Verizon would be more responsible. All it did was LESSEN my data usage. I used to exceed 2GB but NOT now. I had to change the preferred network to 3G only b/c 4GLTE was draining battery. There was no way to change between them.. So now I’m stuck in 3G land.. Thanks Dummies! .
