iPhone 5 Release to Kill Off iPhone 3GS?

Published

on

With the arrival of the new iPhone 5, it appears that Apple will be getting rid of the iPhone 3GS, even as the phone gets updated to the new iOS operating system, iOS 6.

According to The Telegraph, Apple will drop the iPhone 3GS and replace it with the iPhone 4 which will take the iPhone 3GS’ place as Apple’s free on-contract smartphone.

Apple is also going to apparently be replacing the iPhone 4, which it sells in 8GB form only, with a 8GB version of the iPhone 4S, Apple’s current generation iPhone model.

Apple may discontinue the iPhone 3GS next week.

The report also claims that the iPhone 5 will come in three storage options, presumably, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. It also backs the rumored September 21st release date but can’t confirm that the iPhone 5 will feature 4G data speeds, a feature that is said to be coming with Apple’s new iPhone.

So, it would appear that Apple might be getting rid of the iPhone 3GS, even as it updates the device with the latest mobile operating system, Apple’s iOS 6, which should arrive shortly after the September 12th announcement.

The iPhone 3GS, which has been out since 2009, is the lowest-end iPhone model of the three that Apple offers.

With the arrival of the iPhone 5, it would mean that Apple would have two aging iPhone devices in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS and it may be that the company doesn’t see room for four offerings.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until September 12th, the date that Apple will likely announce the iPhone 5 at an event set to take place in San Francisco.

iPhone 5 Rumors

The iPhone 5 is rumored to be debuting on September 12th with a release on September 21st. The device, which will replace the iPhone 4S, is also rumored to be a big change over the previous two iPhone models.

Its design will apparently feature a taller form factor with a 4-inch display with 16:9 aspect ratio, a new dock connector, a different placement for the headphone jack, and a thinner body.

It’s also rumored to have a metal back to go along with 4G LTE, a better processor and front-facing camera and iOS 6
