Verizon Galaxy Nexus Officially Last Nexus to Jelly Bean

Published

on

The bad news just got worse, Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners. Your device, while the first Galaxy Nexus to launch in the United States, is officially last to the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update amongst the Nexus devices here in the United States.

Yesterday, two of the three remaining Nexus devices with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich got their upgrade to Google’s latest and greatest mobile software, which of course, is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Nexus S 4G and the Sprint Galaxy Nexus are now both in the midst of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean roll outs which will be taking place over the course of the next week or so.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus is officially last to Jelly Bean.

As for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, all owners have access to is an easy to install leak that surfaced last week, something that seemed to point to a release on the horizon.

However, it was the Sprint Galaxy Nexus, despite not having a leak, that beat the Verizon Galaxy Nexus to the punch and now, Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners are left to deal with the fact that they, as many of them probably expected, are last to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Most will not be surprised. This is Verizon, a carrier that took five months to roll out its first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich bug fix to its Galaxy Nexus. And, while I had hoped that was not foreshadowing things to come, the reality is that Verizon has again dropped the ball here and again has failed Galaxy Nexus owners, many of whom are some of its most loyal customers.

The worst part is that Verizon continues to remain silent about the update, even as its competitor, which likely boasts a much smaller user base, has beaten it to the update.

Thus far, the carrier has said absolutely nothing in regards to the update.

The leak is, at least, a sign that the carrier is working on the update. But thus far, that’s all we’ve heard from the official Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

Hopefully, the fact that Sprint beat it to the update will inspire Verizon to work harder than ever to get the update out to its loyal customers.

At this point, I think it’s going to have a hard time saving many customers from jumping ship to unlocked versions of future Nexus devices but getting the update out soon might be able to convince a few to hop back on board.

I know of at least one person that will never again buy a carrier-attached version of a Nexus smartphone due to the slowness and lack of communication on Verizon’s end about these updates.

That person?

Me.

We’ll let you know when we hear something about the Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. In the meantime, anyone else feeling let down like I am?

I am with you, But the most frustrating part, What can we do? I have filed a BBB complaint, and received a not our fault call. I have demanded they release me from my contract as they are in breach, but no waving of the early term fee for me:-( . what can we do???????

Interesting…I’m curious, how you interpret them as being in breach. Not trying to be snarky here, asking because I’m curious how you characterize that.

The Galaxy Nexus in Canada only JUST got an update to (the 9 month old) 4.0.2 today, so we’re in a similar boat.

Verizon does not care and never will. Typical big corporation fat cat behavior that only care about their next bonus check.

I agree. They were only interested in getting our money up front. They were only partnering with Google in so much as they could say “we have the first I’ve Cream Sandwich device” and the turned around and delayed the launch. Their more interested in the Droid brand than Android in general. The good news is that Motorola has toned down its own skinning of Android to the point that it’s almost stock. Joke’s on Verizon.

I’ve been on my contract so long Verizon is actually the second company to buy it out so it was literally the 90’s the last time I shopped cellular providers. Not just this mis-labeled nexus issue, but it and other things have added up to me deciding to take my loyal business elsewhere. I see Verizon advertisements on tv and truly feel no pride to be a customer. It’s become something I feel the need to hide. I’m so put off by the company that short of Verizon giving me free service nothing will prevent me from going to another provider when all of the lines on my account are out of contract… and it will give me satisfaction to do so.

I’m A New Costumer With Verizon And By The Looks Of This, The Future Is Bleak- Yes I’m Getting The Nexus And Yes I’m Also Waiting For The Relese On Jelly Bean 4.1- But I May Speak For Everyone When I Say That If a New Update For The Nexus Comes out Before We Get 4.1 I Would Not Be Suprised!

I am so put off by Verizon. I recently became their customer just for the G Nexus and I feel so very cheated. Someone should start a class action lawsuit.

Me too. As soon as Verizon turned on their LTE service in my area, I jumped ship from Sprint to Verizon just for the Galaxy Nexus. I kept hearing rumblings about not getting it because it wasn’t the “real Nexus,” but I didn’t believe it. I wish I had. I love my phone but I won’t buy another Nexus device on a carrier again again. What’s the point of offering these damn things as Nexus branded Google Android phones when they get updates at different times? Android, as much I live for the platform, is really starting to turn me off with the frequent OS releases, and the near-impossible task of the manufacturers’ and carriers’ inability to update their handsets in a timely fashion. Now that Flash, a coveted feature I loved about Android is technically no longer available, I’m seriously considering an iPhone, as much as it pains me to say it.

you cannot sue them in class action. with some carriers you can’t sue them at all and must go into arbitration. read your contract.

Well this is backwards. I left sprint cause gn came out for verizon first. I wanted the nexus experience not Verizon bull crap.guess its GSM nexus from now on.

Well, wait just a minute, is this such a bad thing? My understanding is that jellybean disables the global search feature as well as some other things due to the ridiculous apple/Samsung suit. Is that true? Please clarify…

What does crying about the update on every site really accomplish? Verizon has always been an assh#le-ish company its really no surprise.

Boo, Verizon! And boo for not even telling your customers when they might expect it. The silence is the worst–feels dismissive. That is terrible customer service. And consider how much many of us paid for out Gnex devices (because we couldn’t wait to get our hands on them, so paid dearly, even with the upgrade discounts) it is unconscionable.

I’m done with Verizon after this. Once the next Nexus phone e hits I’m jumping ship. I may miss my unlimited data, but I’m sick of this garbage.

My contract does not expire till June, but at this point, unless things have improved, I’m outta here…will get the GSM Nexus from Google and head straight to AT&T. For sure I dont want VZ to push out an update that will wreck my Nexus, but what the heck have the VZ tech people been doing for past year?? They should’ve had the 4.1 vetted and ready long before now.

I feel most people are hanging on because of the unlimited data which some customers are grandfathered into. I think it is ridiculous to be spending nearly one hundred dollars monthly for these amenities which can be provided by other networks at half the cost. I think Verizon is forgetting the fundamentals of business, “Customers always right” and they should be going above and beyond since we can ditch them.

The only way to keep the unlimited plan is to buy the phone outright. If you upgrade the plan gets changed to the shared 2 GB.

This is why you root and flash it yourself. Stop leaving update for the carrier to roll out but take control yourself. I’ve been running JB since it came out and I’m loving it

Very disappointed with Verizon as well. I bought a galaxy nexus this last January and paid full price for it. 3 replacements later, because of really bad connectivity issues, Verizon switched me to a Razr Maxx. The screen wasn’t as bad to my eyes, but after ICS was pushed out, the phone became VERY buggy, so they switched me out to a Droid 4. Despite the fact that the Droid 4 has an incredibly shitty screen, the phone itself works very well. I forgot how handy hardware keyboards are. The phone is quite good with ICS. My contract is up at the end of the year and I’m giving serious thought to an unlocked Nexus device or one of the new Windows Phone 8 devices. If one of the manufacturers offers a WP8 phone with a hardware keyboard anda nice 4.3″ or 4.5″ screen, that would be very tempting. One more thing. How come Sprint offers a near clone of the Droid 4 with a bigger and color enhanced screen & an external camera button????? The Droid 4 should’ve had these items out of the box. I’m becoming more and more disenchanted with Verizon.

What was the name of the device? It may be a similar model. “Droid” is Verizon’s brand so devices may have different names with other carriers. Yeah the keyboard is nice there will always be people who prefer a hard keyboard. I’ve not heard of any Win Phones with keyboard. I think your only choices for keyboard phones are gonna be Android or Blackberry (if they make it.)

I will never get a carrier device again. My play store g-nex is promptly updated and costs me $45/ month. No unethical feather fee so my Nexus 7 is hallways online too.

Verizon has gone too far with the Galaxy Nexus fiasco and by all accounts they could not care less. Never accept a subsidized device again. Buy Nexus from Google Play and shop for price and service.

When you shop carriers for devices you lose.

Another thing that is a major turn off with Verizon is that not only do they force you on old software but just mentioning device rooting, unlocking bootloaders or anything related to installing jelly bean yourself is treated on their forums as equivalent to discussions planning a crime.

1st, You should be buying a phone for what it has, not what it might get possibly maybe. 2nd, it’s a nexus people, type three words into the damn command line and there you go, You can update you’re phone to JB.

I’ve been running JB on my vz gnez since the day it was announced, come on people, You all are just looking for something to whine about.

As I commented earlier, this update issue among other things is why I’m frustrated with Verizon. I understand completely my ability to flash a leaked version of JB. Here’s my counter to those of you who love to call others whinners and inform us how cool you are and how long you’ve been running JB. What Rom are you using? I’ve tried a few of them and even gotten addicted to flashing new Roms but at the end of day none of them were without their glitches. One your camera doesn’t work, another your camcorder, the next Picasa doesn’t sync. Sometimes it’s more than one app that doesn’t work properly. As much as I love tinkering with my phone I think it’s bs that when my kid does something awesome at the beach my camera craps out or I need an app to serve its intended function that it can’t. From my understanding the whole point of getting a nexus device is to avoid all that sifting through glitchy software. I’m sure I’m not the only one…We get it. We CAN have a leaked version of JB right now but we SHOULDN’T need one is all I’m saying.

first there are plenty of stable Jb builds out there. second if they are still buggy don’t You think that’s what Verizon is working on? if they released the update you’d be bitching about it being buggy, again just looking for something to whine about. an update is a Nice to have, technically Verizon isn’t obligated to update anything, and if You believed the 17 year old sales person who promises speedy updates I’ve got a bridge to sell You. I personally find it comical how peoples lives are so dependent on a cell phone update, I’M GONNA SUE!!!!!! lol hahaha, funny You do that.

    • Spencer

      09/10/2012 at 6:58 pm

Plenty of stable Roms… I’ll give you that. However, I was referring to the quirks of these Roms. CM10/Miui/Droid Vicious are much “cooler” than stock but they all have little quirks about them. If the quirk doesn’t bother you then it’s a non-issue but they could just as easy be a deal breaker. I think (at least hope) that’s exactly what Verizon is working on. I’ll give you that too but this is where we’re just going to have to agree to disagree. If you bought something on ebay and the seller dragged their feet shipping it to you then you’re well within your right to leave a negative feedback. Frankly, the money I spend a month on Verizon I don’t need justification from anyone to leave my negative feedback if I feel it necessary. Keep your bridge… I already own one. It’s the gnex in my pocket. As for the suing part, use whatever you want to justify haggling people “whining” online but don’t think it fits every argument.

Just yesterday 09/13/2012, I went to a Verizon store to once again complain about my GNex, a Verizon sales rep mentioned to that there will be a JB release. He stated that it will be in September. No official date is set, just that there IS an update coming in September… I hope this is true!

The delay of the update is directly.related to the new update to fix the data drop issues of some replacement Nexus. Once they fix this, this ALL Verizon Nexus will get the update.

I know we want it now, but how much of this “where is our update?” but how much of this frustrated buzz is really put out by Sprint, TMobile to make people mad and switch to them. Wouldn’t you feed the drama if you were them? How many new customers did.they get by posting complaints along the same issues? DONT BE FOOLED. I want the update, but this is too obvious.

I liken Verizon’s customer care philosophy to ones clearing of their sidewalk and patio of ant hills. When they become bothersome, they sweep them aside. Thunderbolt and Galaxy Nexus owners, case in point. They bother to think about the plight of the customer only as long as it takes them to bring the broom up for the next stroke.

I just want to know what BAMF theme is running in the above screen shot slide show. I want all the customization that it shows, but I’m not seeing it in my newly updated 4.1.1. Which Verizon just rolled out to me today
