Verizon iPhone 5 Won’t Support Simultaneous Voice and Data

Published

on

Apple’s new iPhone 5 won’t support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon and that means that it will likely not support it on Sprint either.

Verizon Wireless confirmed the news to The Verge saying that while its other 4G LTE devices are able to use voice and data capabilities at the same time, the iPhone 5 will not be able to do so.

Sprint hasn’t confirmed the bad news yet but because the device’s are similar, we don’t expect Sprint to offer simultaneous voice and data either.

The Verizon iPhone 5 won’t support simultaneous voice and data.

Here is Verizon’s full statement in regards to the missing feature:

“The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi.”

So, it appears that nothing will change from the iPhone 4S, Apple’s older iPhone which also can’t do simultaneous voice and data over Verizon’s network.

This is far different tune than the one Verizon reps were singing yesterday when they claimed that all 4G LTE devices could run simultaneous voice and data while in a 4G LTE area.

Those looking to get the AT&T version are in luck though as the carrier confirmed that the iPhone 5 will in fact be able to perform simultaneous voice and data though the data speeds will not be 4G LTE. AT&T says that 4G LTE data won’t be available on a call.

This is nothing new as older iPhones enjoyed this feature as well.

So clearly this is bad news for those thinking about ordering a Verizon iPhone 5 because until today, it was unclear if the iPhone 5 would allow customers to hold a call while browsing the internet on Verizon’s network.

That’s might not be a deal breaker, but it’s certainly a feature that many thought they might have this time around with the iPhone.

The iPhone 5 goes up for pre-order for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon tonight at midnight with Apple, the carriers, and several third-party retailers accepting pre-orders come tomorrow.

As for the iPhone 5 itself, it features a new 4-inch display, a slimmer and more lightweight design, iOS 6, a new processor, and two improved cameras.

It will arrive in stores on September 21st for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon and it will launch for C-Spire Wireless and Cricket on September 28th.

I could care less. About the most over rated and overplayed feature ever. Have been with all caries and never came into play. Get over it.

I care. This feature has come to benefit me many times. And I am sticking with Android because Apple will never have it. Apple wants to save space, so they did not put the third Antenna in iPhone 5 to enable simultaneous talk and surd on CDMA. Apple will wait until many many years from now, CDMA is fully replaced with voice over LTE (VoLTE) in all areas in which case simultaneous talk and surf will be innately supported. But until then, all CDMA users have to suffer needlessly.

Remember that a few years ago, Apple and AT&T used to make make commercials mocking Verizon for lacking this needed feature. Now, it’s time for HTC and Samsung to make ads mocking CDMA iPhones for lack of this feature with clips of Apple’s own ads to remind people how important Apple thought this feature was. And now, Apple is just pretending that it is not. Huh! I am so disappointed in Apple!

People: Buy with a good 4G LTE Android phone and also write about your disappointment over lack of this deal-breaker feature to Apple by going to http://www.apple.com/feedback

Apple: You have no excuse this time for creating crippled CDMA iPhone 5. Apple, you should have made the screen wider to leave room for a third antenna that enables simultaneous talk and surf. Suppose mapping system needs to re-route at a critical road and user receives an important call.

Should the user have to struggle to decide about answering the call and thus cutting off the data from the map and thus get lost or reject an important call and let the mapping app do its job by staying connected to data? And there are many other examples of the lack of simultaneous talk and surf. So many new buyers will be disappointed to find out that their iPhone 5’s will not have simultaneous talk and surf.

Apple, didn’t you and AT&T use to make commercials mocking Verizon for not having simultaneous talk and surf? So now, HTC and Samsung must pay you back with the same mockery to point out your products major and fatal weakness! You never adapted the iPhone well for the CDMA ecosystem. Ahh! I am sick and tired of waiting for Apple to catch up to make the iPhone with this killer feature. I will just stay with Android!
