iPhone 5 pre-orders are officially from Apple, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, but many buyers are reporting trouble trying to complete their purchases. AT&T’s site seems to be the least reliable of the bunch and won’t even let users log in to their accounts at the moment.
Some iPhone 5 buyers are reporting difficulty in placing orders on Apple.com, which is somewhat expected considering Apple’s online store is handling iPhone 5 orders for all three carriers, but most orders seem to be going through just fine.
The Apple Store app so far seems to be the most reliable way to place iPhone 5 pre-orders. However, the app isn’t perfect either. The Apple Store app isn’t allowing iPhone 5 buyers to change their shipping addresses, which means the iPhones will be headed for customers’ whatever default shipping address Apple has on file. Seeing as the first batch of iPhone 5 orders will be delivered on Friday, September 21 and Apple requires signatures for iPhone deliveries, many buyers will need to have their new phones delivered to their workplaces or an alternate address where a friend or family member can sign for the package.
These hiccups aren’t the end of the world, but it does mean headaches that some of Apple’s most loyal customers. There are many reasons why AT&T customers need to access their full account info rather than the abbreviated upgrade eligibility info at Apple.com. The longer AT&T customers need to wait to access their accounts, the more likely it is they run the risk of missing out on Apple’s first iPhone 5 shipments.
AT&T’s iPhone 5 upgrade eligibility checker is also not working for some customers, which is a real problem. The base 16B iPhone 5 has an advertised price of $199, but costs $449 for those eligible for an early iPhone upgrade and $649 for customers ineligible for any discounts.
