5 Overlooked iOS 6 Features You’ll Love

Published

on

Starting tomorrow morning users can download iOS 6 to the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The latest version of Apple’s iOS software includes over 200 new features.

We’ve shared many of these new iOS 6 features, focusing on the flashy ones like Siri on the iPad and turn-by-turn directions, but there are many more iOS 6 features.

These smaller, overlooked, iOS 6 features won’t revolutionize the way you use the iPhone, but these small iOS 6 features are ones I’ve come to appreciate over the past few months, and I’m sure you’ll love when you download iOS 6.

Overlooked iOS 6 Features

Faster Access to Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot

Instead of diving deep in the menus to turn Bluetooth on and off or to access the personal hotspot, these options are both on the main Settings screen.

Faster access to common settings.

The Personal Hotspot option doesn’t show up here until after it is used once, but from then on there is a shortcut to access the personal hotspot. This small feature saves tons of time when using these common functions. With Mobile Share, Share Everything plans and 4G LTE the iPhone 5 is even more attractive as a personal hotspot, but all these features are also on the iPhone 4S and older models.

Siri Bluetooth Control

On iOS 5 Siri can create appointments, send messages and much more, but after pairing a Bluetooth headset I stopped using Siri as often because too many times my headset would be across the room, and the only option to use Siri was to put the headset on or to turn Bluetooth off.

With iOS 6, I can pick between my Bluetooth headset and my iPhone without leaving the Siri pop up.

Reply with Message

In iOS 6, Apple made the phone app smarter with new options to dismiss a call and reply with a message. If I’m almost home, or almost to a meeting I can respond to a call without typing up a message.

This is a perfect way to respond if I am on the go, and I can customize the reply messages to my needs.

Open Apps with Siri

Siri’s new features are amazing, but the one I use the most is the ability to open apps. I am constantly opening apps with Siri, especially music apps I use in my car. The video below shows Siri’s new iOS 6 features including the ability to open apps.

There’s no training, and in the iOS 6 beta Siri is able to handle many app names. Occasionally I need to ask twice, but it’s pretty accurate.

Personal Dictionary

Users that type pet names, inside jokes and other words not in Apple’s dictionary will love the Personal Dictionary in the Cloud feature.

Personal dictionary in the cloud.

In iOS 6, not only will the iPhone or iPad learn your words and spellings, it will sync them to the cloud so they follow from phone to phone and between iOS devices. It’s nice seeing the same words on my iPhone and my ipad without constantly correcting.

iOS 6 arrives tomorrow morning, and should be available for download around 9 or 10 AM Pacific.

    Hi,

How can I use for the first time the personal hotspot, so I can have this option on the settings menu?

I used to have this option enabled in ios 5.1.1 now I can’t find it.

      Hi Carlos
It’s under general settings now, then go into cellular and you will find it in there. When you have used the hotspot once the phone will place a shortcut in your settings screen below the Bluetooth like it was previous

      Cheers

      Andy

The screenshot under “Personal Dictionary” shows nothing related to Personal Dictionary…?
