How To Get YouTube On The iPhone 5

Published

on

The 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 is great for watching video, but sadly the iPhone 5 doesn’t include the YouTube app which shipped with every other iPhone.

Thankfully, there are still ways to watch YouTube on the iPhone 5, and both methods are arguably better than the YouTube app that used to ship with iOS 5.

The first method is to download the new YouTube app from the App Store. More detailed instructions to install the YouTube iPhone app are available.

Google released the new app last week, just one day before Apple unveiled the iPhone 5, and a week before iOS 6 released, removing the built-in YouTube app. The app has most of the features of the website, including the ability to play ads before videos.

Sadly, however, YouTube is one of the many apps in the App Store that isn’t yet ready for the taller screen of the iPhone 5. The app has black boxes above and below it on the iPhone 5 screen in every view. Hopefully Google will fix this sooner rather than later.

Until Google updates the app the best method for watching YouTube videos on the iPhone 5 is through Mobile Safari. Users can visit m.youtube.com on their iPhones and still watch videos. The website is a bit slower than the app, and not as intuitive, but the same videos will work on both.

The mobile website lets users avoid ads in their videos, but the trade off is that users must watch lower quality video. The mobile website doesn’t serve up video at the same quality as the YouTube app. The mobile website also doesn’t offer the same sharing options as the YouTube app, so heavy video sharers will want to stick with the app.

By visiting YouTube in the browser, there is no letterboxing, and users can watch videos on the iPhone 5’s larger, wider screen.

Hopefully Google will update the app soon so iPhone uses can get a better YouTube experience.

Uploading to YouTube on the iPhone 5

The new YouTube app and the mobile version in Safari don’t allow users to upload videos to YouTube, but the built in Photos app and iMovie still let users upload to YouTube. In our iPhone 5 speed test it took just 5 minutes to upload an HD video to YouTube.

The iPhone 5 can upload to YouTube vie Photos.

This option includes the same YouTube upload options as the Phone 4S and iOS 5.

How does having an android phone make him poor? There are android phones that cost more then the iphone. I have an android phone and it never lags. Android has nearly 60% of the smartphone market, iPhone only 19%. Just an Isheep with nothing relivent to say and no experience with an Android phone.

Wait, iPhone 5 is not 720p or 480p..there would still be black on top and bottom regardless. Can’t help it.

Look everyone Truth has spoken. It has to be the truth because Truth said so. Whatever. Good cutdown. i think i heard a 5 year old say the same thing about a toy someone else had that was better than his. Maybe you should grow up a little there. Androids are a fantastic phone. iOS is NOT the only thing to have. I prefer android over iOS cause i don’t like the crap you have to put up with apples restrictions on a phone. They think they own the smartphone market when they are behind android in sales. Maybe they should open up the iOS a little and then they wouldn’t be what you seem to think android phones are. Good luck with passing grade school and hope you graduate to get a good job at the waste sanitation department of whatever little town you live in.

Leave the kid alone. If you don’t like what he says why do you read all of his writing? Or are you just a bunch of tech trolls who have nothing to do because your Walmart light saber ran out of batteries? Go find a biker bar, belly up, order a coke and run your mouth and go run to mama after you’ve had your Android or whatever shoved down your throat.
