iPhone 5 Speed Test Verizon 4G LTE

The iPhone 5 includes 4G LTE connectivity for the first time. 4G LTE is almost 10 times faster than 3G and is a welcome addition for the iPhone 5.

In the iPhone 5 Speed test video below I test Verizon 4G LTE in Ohio. 4G LTE speeds vary based on network demand, signal strength and other factors.

In the video below I run a Speedtest.net app to measure the speed of Verizon 4G LTE on the iPhone 5 as well as download an album from iTunes to measure the real world speed and benefits of 4G LTE.

iPhone 5 Speed Test Verizon 4G LTE

In the video I download a M83 album from iTunes to the iPhone 5 over 4G LTE. This connection is much faster than 3G, and this clip shows some of that speed.

In the video I am able to download a 3MB song in about 10 seconds over 4G LTE and a 9MB song in about 15 seconds. These speeds allow me to download a full iTunes album much faster, in just a few minutes.

These speeds are also great for downloading apps, which users can download over 4G LTE as long as the app size is less than 50MB. Based on these speeds, users may be able to download a 50MB app in about a minute to a minute and a half.

The upload speeds in the tests results are not particularly impressive, but a real world speed test allowed me to upload a 44.5Mb video to YouTube in 3 to 5 minutes. That’s faster than uploading to YouTube over my home WiFi connection.

iPhone 5 4G LTE speed test.

Verizon’s 4G LTE network is crowded this morning and upload speeds are slower than we normally see in some locations but the following speeds represent a sampling of Verizon Wireless 4G LTE speed tests on the iPhone 5.

  • 9.67 Mbps Down / 0.98 Mbps Up
  • 7.14 Mbps Down / 0.58 Mbps Up
  • 6.46 Mbps Down / 0.51 Mbps Up
  • 2.27 Mbps Down / 2.22 Mbps Up
  • 2.01 Mbps Down / 2.91 Mbps Up

These speeds vary, and users without an unlimited plan should pay close attention to the data limits. The iPhone allows users on Verizon to monitor data usage right form the phone and will send alerts when usage hits 50%, 75%, 90% and 100%.
