Motorola Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich Update Delayed Until Q4

Published

on

Motorola has officially delayed the Motorola Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update into the fourth quarter of this year which means it won’t arrive until October, November or December.

Just a day after the company told owners of the Droid Bionic that they got a raw deal with Ice Cream Sandwich, the company updated its Ice Cream Sandwich timeline. The timeline now shows the Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update coming in Q4 and not early Q3 or Q3 as was previously announced.

This means that it will arrive sometime in the next three months though Motorola hasn’t revealed which it will arrive in.

The Droid Bionic ICS update was delayed until Q4.

Clearly, this is not good news and not the news Droid Bionic owners, especially those that were growing impatient with Motorola and the lack of an update, wanted to hear.

However, it’s clear that the update was not ready to go and instead of pushing out a buggy update, Motorola chose to continue to work on it in order to iron things out.

This of course now puts even more pressure on Motorola. Owners will expect the update to be flawless when the software rolls out, that is, if it rolls out in Q4.

Motorola already missed one deadline, hopefully it doesn’t miss another.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TaJ4BlthS44

The update comes a day after new Motorola’s new Vice President of Product, Punit Soni, said that Droid Bionic owners did indeed get a raw deal on Ice Cream Sandwich and that he promised more information soon.

Obviously, he didn’t give Droid Bionic owners the news they wanted today but at least Motorola didn’t wait until the very least day, like HTC did with the ThunderBolt and Droid Incredible 2, to announce the delay.

So, that means that Droid Bionic owners, what’s left of them, are going to have to tough it out on Android 2.3 Gingerbread until October at the earliest.

How does that sound Droid Bionic owners?

Wow, this is an ongoing saga. Frustrating because you know the update is out on other phones. My wife’s HTC got updated at the first of September. Oh well…. I guess I can stop checking daily for the update.

      09/24/2012 at 11:26 am

Same here. So many promises to fix the existing issues, yet no fruition. My wife has the RAZR and it got ICS pushed to it like three months ago. VZW replaced my phone twice before admitting that they knew the issues were ICS related and not hardware related. On my third phone in less than a year. I wish they would just upgrade the hardware for free to the RAZR, but they won’t. I WILL NOT go to iPhone, but seriously considering Nexus or Samsung….even nokia?… for next hardware. And I may even be leaving VZW knowing that a lot of this is due to them, not Moto. They are both to blame and only Moto seems to be fessing up to any of it.

What do I think! I think I have had it with Motorola. There is NO excuse for this. If I had known it
would take this long to get updated I would’ve bought the Galaxy Nexus. Do you hear me Motorola, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER MOTOROLA PHONE! I was told in October of 2011 that this phone was gonna get ICS in couple months. I would rather have a buggy update that you fix later that to be lied too. Waiting to the end of Q3 to change the update schedule to say Q4 instead of EARLY Q3 doesn’t do anything to make it up to Bionic users. Too little too late!

Honestly im just happy its being acknowledged. Soni JUST took over a few weeks ago people cant seriously expect him to iron out moto’s issues right on the spot, there is a process and he at least is trying to hear us out. I think too many bionic owners are having overexaggerated responses for an update. Lets give google a shot and remember thar vzw is just as much to blame. I look forward to my ics update, if jb arrives instead that would be nice but ill at least be happy with an up to date os.

  8. Sam

    09/22/2012 at 9:54 am

Truthfully, I still love my phone. Gingerbread doesn’t really bother and I look forward the the new os. Supposedly we will get JB too, but we will see how that one goes.

The bionic is not getting jellybean. And it probably wont be getting ICS either. I spoke to a moto Rep the other day & he said their not going to push the ICS update to the bionic (cuz of all the issues they had with the razr ICS update). I’m very upset with moto – I gave them a 2nd chance & once again screwed me.

      • RC

        09/23/2012 at 4:41 pm

Sorry, but your “moto Rep” doesn’t know shit and you don’t keep up with what is actually taking place.

          09/23/2012 at 11:10 pm

Well it really doesn’t matter now cuz Verizon is sending me a razr maxx now – free! After many hrs on the phone with tech support trying to fix the issues with my bionic, constructive complaining nicely & a little patience goes a long way. The key word here (RC) is “nicely”. Sorry but moto stopped caring about the bionic last october when it launched the razr. The razr line is moto’s main focus now. At least Verizon is trying to make me a satisfied customer again – I wouldn’t count on moto bionic owners. I’ll be enjoying my yummy treat very soon!

I couldn’t be more upset by this. I think at this point to keep from losing customers like myself, they should just push forward with getting JB out for the Bionic by the end of the year! If they make that announcement, I’ll be keeping the Bionic and faith in Moto. If not, I’m off to Samsung, never Apple!

I did a beta upgrade a few months ago.. and the Bionic is doing well with the beta. Not sure why Motorola needs more time. Phone is still strong, I still like Motorola and I am looking at the new MaxxHD in early next year as my next device..

  15. Nick

    09/22/2012 at 10:20 am

I agree with Matthew. I’m willng to give Soni a chance to fix things. He just took over. I went back and forth between the Bionic and the Razr. I chose the Bionic and never looked back. It does everything I need it to do and have never had a problem with it. I would rather wait for a flawless upgrade then get a buggy one that renders my perfectly good phone totally useless just to get the upgrade faster.

    09/22/2012 at 10:21 am

Seen this coming yesterday when he said they were updating the timeline. Heading straight for Samsung and possibly another carrier when up for renewal. At this point, no sense in even bothering with ICS.

    09/22/2012 at 10:24 am

I’m actually going to hang on to my Bionic. If I buy a new phone, I have to lose my unlimited data plan. They’re delaying it on purpose so that we have to buy a new phone rather than getting ICS scott free on our Bionics.

    • shaggydog82

      09/22/2012 at 2:32 pm

So true- I’m in the same boat. If I want a new phone, I gotta pay full retail price or I lose my unlimited data cuz Verizon will make me change my contract. I’ve f’ing had it with Verizon & Motorola!

I’m sorely disappointed in Motorola for selling this phone with false hopes. Big ones.. I hope they give Bionic owners an upgrade to a better phone or even a Bionic 2 for free. I wonder if it would be cheaper to upgrade us to razr’s at this point. Since the last update I have my LTE turned off because my connection sucks so bad. Such a shit deal when you think how much this phone was when it came out. I have to assume thatthey are now working to leap frog us to jelly bean.. Its the only thing that seems logical. P.s. How many bionics do we think are in use at this time?

  23. Karl

    09/22/2012 at 10:37 am

If they would spend the resources and money they spent to advertise the Bionic we would have the ICS by now but once they got the Bionic In our hands and our money in their hands we are forgotten. I can perfectly understand one or two delays but this clearly shows their lack of concern for us Bionic owners. Shame on you Motorola AND the high priced Verizion service. My future phone hand carrier service weights heavily with this poor treatment by two uncaring companies….they got our money so they don’t care !

Verizon gave me a Razr as a warranty replacement for my Bionic after one replacement Bionic and SIM card, due to data drops. My Razr is great: no data drops and 40% on battery after 11 hours.

I guess they really want to ruin there reputation even more. To think I actually believed that id have ics before they launched the new iPhone 5…. Considering I own most of the bionic accessories my hands are a little tied. Maybe I”ll just go buy the new iPod touch and sulk in the corner. Dont expect bionic owners to be promotion any of the new motorola phones either.

  28. Bob

    09/22/2012 at 11:33 am

I hate hearing the excuse that this extra delay is so we don’t get a buggy ICS like the Razr did. So, you mean to tell me that this is going to be bug free, no issues? Hardly likely. The Bionic has had issues from day one that Moto should have gotten sued for (data drops rendering the phone not very useful as a reliable phone). Imagine if this were a car. Oh, sometimes the transmission locks up, just turn it on and off a couple of times….Notice Soni did not say the delay meant a bug free update, because it won’t be based on past experiences. Moto just didn’t care, plain and simple. Vote with your wallet, I will. The ONLY way to save face is an immediate JB upgrade before any other Moto phones get it. That or an even up swap for a current model. Why should I pay anything extra to swap out a phone that has never been fully reliable and current? What say you MOTO?

The bottom line is that this phone has NEVER lived up to its potential. A dual processor phone that can’t access both, with 4G that can’t reliably be used. What is the point? And now the best they can do is say sometime within the next three months? After a year? Not good enough, Motorola. This has been a debacle since the get-go.

Sit there and tell your customers that they have been given them a raw deal, then slap them in the face and push the date out right afterwards !!!! Tell me you didnt know that already !.
Soni also said that he had plans for the Bionic…. would love to hear his corporate speak for what his plans truly are ? Trying to figure out another way to lie to your customers ?
I was just at Verizon today adding a fourth line to my account,….. and it was NOT a Motorola !!!!!! My wife and I both have Moto’s and our contracts are up in June’13….and I will then say goodbye to Motorola for good.

    09/22/2012 at 3:52 pm

I agree that it is Verizon rejecting the ICS builds. It appears to be a plot to force Bionic owners to change devices so they’ll lose their unlimited data plans. How else can they explain pretty much every other device getting it already along with all of the nearly perfect Bionic ICS builds leaked recently? It’s not that hard to believe when you look at the evidence. Verizon’s very own CFO said “unlimited is just a word that doesn’t really mean anything”. They have a pretty clear plan that involves no more unlimited data and Bionic owners are seemingly the last loose end. With no ICS update, Bionic will continue to have 4G network connection issues and Verizon knows that. Whether or not Motorola is in on this plot remains unclear. I say don’t give in, root your device or hold out. This is completely rediculas that they would expect anyone to be dead last for an update when their device was out first. The only way to really make up for this is to schedule an immediate free upgrade to a higher end device with the exceptional stipulation that all owners are permanently grandfathered unlimited data without the possibility of ever being removed.

Goodbye Motorola! Never again. NEVER AGAIN! I loved the RAZR, loved the Tundra, and thought maybe I would love the Bionic. Since you guys are slower than Molasses in winter with this update, it is time for me to move on!

  44. Dean

    09/22/2012 at 4:10 pm

I was hesitant to root my phone and flash one of the ICS leaks because of the new “security” that tells Verizon/Moto that the phone is rooted, but heck, my phone is gonna be out of warranty now before ICS comes out for it. As far as I’m concerned, Moto/Verizon have effectively abandoned the Bionic. My best option now is to flash the latest ICS leak, and then when my contract is up, switch to the Galaxy Note 2 or whatever else is better. Moto can take their $100 credit on another Moto phone and shove it. Why would I want to be on another Moto phone and wait wait wait for another update on that one? Nope, Moto has to demonstrate they can deliver timely updates on a phone for me now, not just say they are going to, in order to win me back.

I’m just glad my Bionic is my work phone, paid for by my employer. If I’d laid out my own cash for this kind of BS, I’d be super ticked. It’s annoying enough as it is, since without ICS I have to use an ugly hack to get my work e-mail (nothing below ICS supports certificate-based e-mail push). I bought it on the assurance that ICS was coming soon so I wouldn’t need the hack for very long.

I use it for tethering when the wi-fi at work is down, that’s about it. It’s just unforgivably painful for anything else. Won’t be buying another Moto phone, and probably not another Android at all as this whole kind of affair is hardly unique to Motorola.

I was at the Verizon wireless store yesterday to get my son’s phone fixed under warranty. This was not one of those “authorized retailers” but one with verizion employees. When I asked about the upgrade for my Droid Bioinc, the tech behind the counter laughed as my question has been the top questions of bionc owners. Anyway, he told me that Verizion is not approving the software release due to some software issue and there was “little chance” the Bionic would get ICS. He even looked in to his database for the next quarter and said that “so far, I don’t see the Droid Bionic on next quarters update schedule”. He then went on to let me know my bionic is worth $110 towards a trade-in to another Motorola phone or even the iPhone 5. The catch, when I change my plan, I get leashed into their new data plan. But, I can upgrade now, only a year into my contract without paying full price. Sounds like “the plan” is already in the works…

  57. Paul

    09/23/2012 at 8:54 am

So how many of you are willing to do what Verizon would LOVE you to do? Either, pay a huge early termination charge to jump ship, or pay full price to get a new device. You realize that VZW subsidizes the low price for a new device and makes it up in locking you into a 2 year contract. If you pay full price for a device, you still pay the same overpriced monthly payment to them. It’s a WIN-WIN scenario to VZW!

Be patient, stick with what you have. When your contract runs out, THEN make the change.

    • Chase

      09/23/2012 at 9:21 am

Verizon was willing to waive my early termination charge plus offer me $110 trade-in for my Droid Bionic towards a new phone provided I’d leave my current unlimited data plan. Even still, it’s still a win for Verizon and a loose for the customer.

      • Adam K.

        09/24/2012 at 12:28 pm

“Provided I’d leave my current unlimited plan”…. EXACTLY what they want you to do. What they want everybody to do….

  58. Dave

    09/23/2012 at 9:07 am

Wow, everyone needs to chill. I’m as pissed as everyone else, but c’mon people jumping ship to IPhone? That’s crazy talk. Never! The Bionic is still a great phone and if you are tired of waiting there’s a simple and easy fix and you don’t even need to root your phone! Do as some of the others here have suggested. Go and grab one of the leaked ICS updates and update your phone. I’m not an experienced phone geek and all I did was some reading. Just don’t go past the 232 update or you’ll be stuck on it forever until someone figures out how to get back on the OTA path. Put the 232 update on your SD card and update it through recovery. There are tons of youtube videos on this to walk you through it. I got tired of waiting and have been running ICS on my Bionic for months. It has fixed EVERYTHING that has ever been wrong, including 4G data drops. It’s amazing and I couldn’t be happier. ICS rocks. It’s like having a new phone – the phone we all expected to have when we bought the thing. I don’t know what perfection Motorola and VWZ are looking for because I haven’t found anything that doesn’t work. Plus, the nice thing about this specific update is that when the final OTA update comes out you will be able to go back to the current GB version via similar method and get back on the OTA path.

  59. Azics

    09/23/2012 at 10:48 am

Motorola is not the problem here, It’s Verizon. Don’t expect ICS in Q4, or ever for that matter.

Verizon has dumped the Bionic and would love for all of us to dump our Bionics too. Moving to the iphone or latest Samsung? Good, that’s exactly what Verizon wants you to do. They get paid money for full price devices, so you can shut up about “when is ICS coming to Bionic?”, and then they don’t have to worry about a large class-action lawsuit since very few Bionics will be left when they finally admit that ICS is not coming.

Upgrade to a leak and be done with it. The leaks are stable. Verizon is just rejecting the releases because they don’t want to support Bionic anymore.

“However, it’s clear that the update was not ready to go and instead of pushing out a buggy update, Motorola chose to continue to work on it in order to iron things out.”

No, nothing is clear about it, but at least Bionic owners are getting an update, even if delayed again. Atrix 4G and Photon 4G owners have been relegated all the way back to “details coming soon”. Every time we’ve been told “soon”, “soon” actually meant months.

The new CEO would not come out and say we got the shaft and that ICS will be out in the Q4 for the Bionic if it were not true. That would really give him and the “new” Moto a bad rep. I can’t imagine them pushing out JB, but we will get ICS.

Just got off the phone with the local verizon store. Only if you buy the phone out right will they let you keep your plan. Guy said people using bionics were abusing the unlimited plans using them to run businesses and bogging down the network so instead of improving their network this is how they choose to solve the problem….lame.

This is my first, and last Motorola phone. I loved the iPhone but I wanted 4g, so I switched to this piece of crap, getting non stop data drops and constant rebooting, and now waiting for an update that will probably never arrive. All signs are pointing to the galaxy.

I’ve been with Motorola since the Droid1 and really haven’t had any complaints. Most of the Google play apps run smoothly on the Bionic when other others HTC, Samsung, etc.. were having issues but the lack of OS updates on the Bionic when this phone was once consider Motorola’s flagship device is simply ridiculous! My’ wife’s IPhone has received at least 3 updates already. Time to move on to the IPhone 5.

I too got tired of the delays for ICS that’s supposed to have fixed the data drop problem. I complained and Verizon sent me a replacement Bionic(!) with the same data drop problem of course. I bought the iPhone 5 Friday and just sold my bionic for a hundred bucks on Craigslist. Moto and whoever is responsible really need to get it together.

I just got off the phone with Verizon customer service. The woman with whom I spoke was very nice, but said that this is the first call that she had received about this issue. I was polite, and very patient, and she is currently discussing it with her manager offline to see what they can do for me. I bought the bionic shortly after release (October, 2011) and am not eligible for an upgrade yet. I’m hoping that Verizon will be able to flag my account as “upgrade eligible” so that I can get rid of this damned bionic. I’m tired of the dropped data, and it is becoming amply clear that ICS may never arrive. For a phone that was one of their flagship devices, Motorolla sure has done a poor job of providing support.

Sure, I recognize that Verizon may be partially to blame. That said, if Motorolla had delivered on their end of the bargain, then I would still have ICS on my bionic by now, even with significant Verizon delays. This will be my last Motorolla product, unless they seriously turn around the ship in the coming years. Too bad, as I’ve been a fan of Motorolla for a long time. Hello, Samsung.

As a Bionic owner who is also impatiently waiting for the update, calm down people. You make it sound like we’re living in archaic times with the Gingerbread. Of course this isn’t the news I want to hear, and Motorola certainly dropped the ball, and hopefully they can do something in the meantime to remedy our patience. But in the meantime, I still enjoy my phone a lot, and I’ll still have to wait impatiently.

Got tired of waiting so installed leaked version, best thing i did. I see no bug problems besides having to mess with flash a bit but intermittent connectivity has been corrected.

I am a bionic owner, and quite frankly, I think moto should skip ICS and release JB to us. They should have been planning for this as soon as it was evident to their engineers that it would not be able to release ICS to the Bionic at the start of Q3 along with the Razr.

My Bionic works great with GB
Phone service is excellent, data is snappy.
I would appreciate a dual core device to have an OS that uses both cores efficiently, but as a communication device, this is an awesome phone, even with GB. Still love it.

congrats to motorola. now the droid razr m is out and has ics. the razr and razr maxx updates remain a disaster. damn company cant make lousy phones and survive. they keep shooting themselves in the foot. samsung is loving this . no more moto here no matter what they try to deal us.verizon is on the wall too.

I’ve had it as well and I just got done chatting online with a Motorola rep. I was lied to as well by the Verizon rep last November and led to believe that an ICS update was right around the corner. This is complete bullcrap. I will never buy another Motorola phone and I may switch carriers next May. Jerks.

    09/25/2012 at 3:50 pm

I think Verizon and Moto may be smarter then many of you, may think. This update delay seams to be the perfect way to get rid of a lot of morons, and angry piss-ants.
I would admit that the delays are frustrating, but to get angry about it say a lot about you (and not good things)!
Moto says they have a plan for the Bionic< and I believe they mean it. So I think I will buy up a couple of these Bionic's that a bunch of you morons are dumping for cheap.

Guys…I have been frustrated by the process also. Thats why I flashed ICS like 2 months ago. I have had 0 problems since. No internet drops. Phone is faster than ever. And Im no technology genius. It is easy to do.

    09/26/2012 at 1:14 pm

What a disaster! Poor management, poor leadership, just a big a joke. Moto is bleeding from the eyes. Why bother with ICS, they owe us JB…. it is all too little to late. This is the last Moto I will buy… I’m moving a Samsung or an LG Quad Core Optimus when it is released in the States. Moto has pissed off its market 3/4 of its market share….good riddance.

1.) The Droid Bionic is already obsolete.
2.) Verizon is as much to blame since they keep disapproving upgrade builds by Motorola. This phone is proprietary only to Verizon so they have the final word on the ICS release, not Motorola.
3.) Verizon would rather have Droid Bionic owners trade in their phone now so they can switch them from their older unlimited data plan. They’ve already offered me $100 trade in and will waive my early termination fee. But I’m not willing to get leased into a new, longer contract.
4.) Verizon is tossing Motorola under the bus on this issue. At least Motorola finally spoke up while Verizon still ignores their customers.

Never buying a Motorola product again. I feel totally duped by falling for the be-all-end-all hype this phone had when I got it. Dropped calls, piss poor LTE signal, and other general weird behavior. Been waiting for the update hoping it might make the phone more than just semi-usable. Apparently that’s not going to happen any time soon, and I rely on my phone for work. SO Goodbye MOTO…this phone is heading to the sock drawer next week.

    09/28/2012 at 9:30 am

This complete lack of communication is unacceptable in today’s marketplace. If there isn’t some sort of recompense, I’m thinking this will be my second and last Motorola phone. I certainly won’t be buying an iPhone, but Samsung and HTC will, I’m sure, have some very nice offerings when I’m ready to upgrade.

  89. Love my Bionic

    09/29/2012 at 5:22 pm

Samsung is notorious for releasing bug riddled consumer electronics and doing NOTHING about it. I have a Digital TV DVD recorder to prove it. So why don’t you whiners quit bitching and wait for the upgrade.

  90. Love my Bionic

    09/29/2012 at 5:33 pm

Oh. and a follow-up for you pathetic whiners, I looked up the original ads for the Bionic. It DID NOT say you will receive a upgrade to ICS, it only said “upgradable to ICS”. And that is a fact as the leaked versions show.

  91. Mickey Mills

    09/30/2012 at 10:23 pm

It’s a real shame. Honestly, I really like my Bionic.

Quick story… I forgot to put the phone away and left it in my tee shirt pocket, hopped on the harly and a bout a half mile down the road at about 30 mph, I hit a bump and bam… Out it flew right down to the asphalt. I turned around real quick, got to the phone, picked up the pieces (phone, battery and back cover),. I put it back together and the phone never skipped a beat. That sold me on the solidity of the hardware.

Now if I could just get ICS. The missed deadlines is unprofessional and with a new upgrade date 6 months away, I’m still thinking about what my next phone will be. This upgrade fiasco may push me to another manufacturer. The Galaxy Note 2 is looking pretty good…

A lot can happen in 6 months.

    10/03/2012 at 1:37 am

I purchase 400 phones a year for my employees and they have been moto’s. When I bought the bionics I was assured that ICS would roll out Qt3, well here and now gone. Im going to give till 10/8 and if no ICS, leaving moto for good, hoping moto wont let us down.

  93. Wckd Wtch

    10/04/2012 at 7:06 am

I have the bionic running one of the ICS leaks and it works flawlessly. That being said, If Moto and VZW had their stuff together, I wouldn’t have had to do it myself. Moto at one point was talking up to $100 towards an upgrade. That’s all well and good if I wanted to go back into contract, AND lose unlimited data. I don’t think so. But for those of you considering dropping one of the leak onto your bionic, if I can do it you can.

  94. Bob Kaster

    10/04/2012 at 9:21 pm

Seriously, if Motorola doesn’t get their act together and roll out ICS for the Bionic soon, two things are going to happen -1) I’m rooting my phone and installing ICS myself and 2) my next phone is going to be a Samsung.
