Nokia Xpress Helps Lumia Owners Keep Browser Data Usage Low

By  |  1 Comment

Nokia’s latest Lumia exclusive app is a web browser with some new discovery elements and a way to keep data usage low.

The new Nokia Xpress is now available via Nokia’s BetaLabs and it helps users stay within their data caps by compressing website data by up to 85 percent. The app does this by serving the websites through Nokia’s cloud service which compresses images on websites.

Users can set the amount of compression used on the images so they aren’t stuck with highly compressed images all the time.

To use even less data, Nokia Xpress lets users save websites for offline reading, which is also handy for users who want to save pages to read when on a subway or airplane without Wi-Fi.

Save to SkyDrive lets users save data while not in a Wi-Fi hotspot by saving large files to SkyDrive for later download.

Nokia Xpress isn’t only about saving data, however. The app also has some ways to help users discover new content. Nokia Xpress has a special Magazine feature which is essentially an RSS feed reader that organizes stories in a magazine-like fashion. The feature sounds a lot like Flipboard, which isn’t available on Windows Phone.

Tapping on any word in a story in Nokia Xpress will also help users discover more content. Tapping on the word brings up a page with Bing, YouTube, and Wikipedia results for the topic. It sounds especially useful for finding out small bits of information about a given subject.

The last big feature isn’t really about content discovery, but more about the ability to read content. Nokia Xpress has a built-in translation tool which will let users translate entire websites into the language of their choice, assuming the app supports their language.
