Consumer Reports Defends Apple’s iPhone 5 Purple Haze Camera Issue

After Apple had declared the purple haze or tint occurring with images captured with the 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone 5 being ‘normal,’ it looks like Consumer Reports may have justified Apple’s claims. According to the popular review publication, the purple haze issue isn’t just limited to Apple’s iPhone 5 and is something that occurs on a number of Android smartphones as well.

The publication had conducted a series of test, which validates users’ claims that the purple haze does exist on the iPhone 5 when images are captured with a bright light source in front of the camera. However, when Consumer Reports tested the iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, it found that the purple haze exists on these devices as well, and the issue is no better than that on the iPhone 5.

The haze was often purple, but can also be different colors.

Consumer Reports was initially most notable for its critique of the iPhone 4. Despite having found the iPhone 4 favorable, the publication said that it cannot recommend the smartphone due to problems with reception due to issues that became known as Antennagate.
