Apple sent out invites to journalists today inviting the press to a product announcement on October 23rd where we expect to see the iPad Mini and possibly a collection of other new Apple products.

The iPad Mini is rumored to use a smaller 7.85-inch display, dropping about 2-inches off of the latest iPad model’s screen size. The event invite hints at the smaller device with the, “We’ve got a little more to show you.” tagline.

Apple plans the iPad Mini event for October 23rd.

Alongside the smaller iPad, there are rumors of an iPad refresh that brings the new lightning connector to the iPad. This would allow Apple to focus on the new connection and simplify making iOS accessories that work across the range of devices.

The iPad Mini, as it is commonly called in the press and by Apple fans, could also carry the iPad Air name, as noted by Apple insider John Gruber recently.

The iPad Mini is likely to use a smaller 7.85-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio like that on the iPhone 5. Various reports indicate the iPad Mini will not use a Retina Display like the New iPad. This may be a move to keep costs down as Apple likely wants to compete with the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. It’s unclear if the iPad Mini will ship with cellular connectivity such as 4G LTE or 3G.
