It looks like not only were rumors true that HTC is in fact working on a quad-core 5-inch phablet, but it appears that HTC is increasing its leadership with display technology thanks to a brilliant Super LCD 3.0 display. The company is showing off its Japan-centric J Butterfly quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro-powered smartphone recently and it looks like The Verge is smitten with the Super LCD 3.0’s 1080p HD display due to its high pixel density, accurate color reproduction, and slim bezels.

Additionally, the J Butterfly has 2 GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera.

The J Butterfly is said to be a Japan-only model right now, though it’s likely that HTC will create variants of this phone for other markets. A 5-inch phablet with a Full HD 1080p display, quad-core processor, and 5-inch screen has been rumored for Verizon for some time now and it is speculated that the 5-inch phablet may join Google’s Nexus family.

However, according to HTC, the brilliant Super LCD 3.0 display will also be making its way to future handsets.

HTC has always delivered smartphones with great displays. The HTC One X’s display is among the best smartphone display on the market today. The company was a heavy user of Super LCD and Super LCD 2, and it’s nice to hear that Super LCD 3.0 will continue to help HTC extend its leadership in smartphone screens. If the J Butterfly or some variant of it launches in the U.S., it will likely have to compete against the Galaxy Note II, which has a lesser 720p HD display using Super AMOLED technology.
